This was day 4 of the Portland run and that might explain some empty seats. The cast, however, played full out and gave the audience their best. The set was imaginative and the lighting terrific. Unfortunately, the sound quality was not up to the task. There was a lack of clarity that in particular, caused Usnavy's patter hard to catch and since his is the main story driver, that hurt the impact for the audience.
The actors for both love interests didn't show the development of the attractions - they sang about it, but didn't act it. On the other hand, the aunt, the salon characters and Unsnay's young brother were winning characters. The chorus dancers were accomplished, but too often the posing seemed articial - that's the director's issue. All in all, an enjoyable show, but one that didn't resolve into an emotional enough commitment to staying "in the heights."
