About

JULY TALK IN CONCERT:

Canadian indie outfit July Talk is quickly rising the ranks with their blues-meets-pop sound and the engaging vocal interplay of dual lead singers Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay. Dreimanis' husky growl is the perfect counterpoint to Fay's demure purr, and the duo play up the he-said-she-said drama with tongue-in-cheek lyrical bickering and amicable play-fighting on stage. Whether they're sending each other up on "Paper Girl" or rocking hard on "Summer Dress", the dynamic pair are the perfect front to the band's potent blend of indie, pop, and good old fashioned rock and roll.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

July Talk formed in Toronto in 2012 after smoky-voiced musician Peter Dreimanis overheard the angelic Leah Fay singing in a bar. She instantly became his muse, and together they assembled a band that complemented their strikingly different singing styles. July Talk released their self-titled debut album that same year, impressing critics with their robust blues-inspired sound and the playful vocal exchange of Dreimanis and Fay. In 2013 the band toured with big-name acts like Weezer and Tegan and Sara, wowing audiences with their vibrant energy and showmanship. Additional performances at festivals like Rock the Park London and the Toronto Urban Roots Festival helped cement their reputation as a must-see live act, setting big expectations for their sophomore album and accompanying tour.

    Amazing!!

by Betzy on 2023-04-01Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

July Talk was so so so good! Best concert I’ve seen in awhile! The opening band Crown Lands was unbelievable too. The Commodore is the best venue to see your favourite bands. I’m not going back to Rogers anytime soon. Quick eats we’re delicious and fairly priced, good seats, easy to get drinks and great access to washrooms. Only drawback was the lead singers’ mic was too quiet and the band overpowered them. Other than that it was perfect!

Great band, absolutely horrible sound quality

by Daniel on 2023-03-15Massey Hall - Toronto

I have seen July Talk several times, unfortunately the sound quality at the Massey Hall concert was so bad it was impossible to enjoy the concert. For almost all the concert it was like the mics were almost off and you were listening to a karaoke track of just the instruments. I am not sure if this a problem with Massey Hall upper level but not sure I will go back to Massey to see a concert. Looked like a great concert just wish it sounded like one!

Incredible experience even from the back row

by Cat on 2023-03-14Massey Hall - Toronto

This concert was everything I expected and more. The staff at Massey Hall were incredibly helpful from coat check, to bars (on I believe every level), to finding your seats. July Talk, as always, was so fun to watch and the crowd just lit up! Thank you July Talk, Massey Hall, and Ticketmaster for this incredible experience.

Great musicians - not great sound

by Still a fan! on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

First time seeing July Talk and it was at Massey Hall - we were so excited!!! The first act “Crown Lands” was very unexpected and we really liked them. This duo was amazing to watch and hear. Such talented musicians. July Talk came on stage with incredible energy. The first song’s intro of drums and guitar really got the house going … then the singers joined in and unfortunately you could not hear them. We were in the upper level on the LHS of the stage and the mix was very disappointing. I went into the lobby and spoke to a manager and he was kind enough to move us into the center section but the mix still did not allow us to enjoy the experience (all drums - could hear the male vocalist better as the night went on but the female vocalist and the saxophone player were completely washed out). We ended up leaving about an hour into it. We did not have a ton of experience with this band prior to attending so we listed to their albums the following day. They really are good. Unfortunately their sound people had an off night.

Happy to finally see July Talk live

by Leaside Linda on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

We are in our 70's and discovered July Talk listening to radio stations like Indie 88. We started downloading their music on Spotify then, early in the pandemic, we streamed their drive-in concert in Sharon, Ontario and loved it. My husband said he'd like to see them live if they ever come to somewhere like Massey Hall as he hates stadiums. So we were excited to get tickets for this concert in the newly restored Massey Hall. Sadly, my husband had an accident and couldn't come so I went alone. The opening act, Crown Lands, were a pleasant surprise and I really enjoyed their lively set. The 30 minute intermission gave me a chance to look around the magnificent restoration. I was so excited to watch July Talk live and they did not disappoint, playing all my favourite songs as well as others I was not familiar with. I loved the contrasting voices of Peter & Leah - this is what makes the band so unique and, combined with the excellent Massey acoustics, this was a fantastic show.

    Love Live Music

by ToeKnee on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

Second time seeing July Talk. Love the band. We had trouble hearing the vocals (which is their dominant feature). Their singing was drowned out by the music…. I am sure better sound board work would improve this! I think the stage lighting and supporting effects are still at the “bar band” level and growth in this area will greatly improve their live experience. The music and song writing is something they should be very proud of and I hope to see them again soon.

Turn the sound down and the lyrics up!

by Sound police on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

Love Pete and Leah's voices but you couldn't hear the lyrics because the sound/base was too loud. I don't want this to be a negative review because the concert was great but more so constructive criticism if their sound guy happens to see this :)

    Great band, bad sound quality

by Sandy on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

They are a great group., however the sound quality wasnt great. You could hardly hear their voices over the instruments.

    Great band, not best experience

by Shay on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

Love July Talk. They did awesome, first time seeing them. I just wish security was a bit more, people smoking right in my face in the GA. Also radio stations stop giving out tickets. Guy that were beside us talked the whole concert and didn’t care cause they didn’t like the band, just won tickets. They were drunk and smoking, nobody seemed to care. Definitely ruined the experience.

    Louder Microphones

by Steve on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

Awesome concert. July Talk played my favorites, and Crown Lands exceeded expectations. The vocalist's microphones should have been louder for July Talk though.

July talk was great, but the atmosphere wasn't.

    by BA55I5T on 2023-03-13Massey Hall - Toronto

The lower rating has nothing to do with the talent of the bands, but more so of the overall experiance of the show. For starters, whoever was mixing sound for July Talk took about half the cocnert before realizing the mics were way too low. Also the overall feeling of the crowd didn't have much energy, every jsut seemed like they were half asleep and wanted to leave.
