About

English rockers Keane play a unique brand of alternative rock that highlights the piano instead of the more traditionally favored guitar. The band is made up of lead singer Tom Chaplin, drummer Richard Hughes, bassist Jesse Quin and pianist Tim Rice-Oxley. Anyone who has been to a Keane concert tends to talk about the infectious excitement coming from the stage, with a fun light show in the background to add to the atmosphere. In particular, during the tour to promote their Strangeland album, even the ballads they performed were described by ticket holders as rousing and energetic.

The band is named after a family friend who at one time cared for and inspired some of the band members, most of whom met in England at a young age. Though Keane has gone through some changes since the beginning, including the departure of guitarist and founder Dominic Scott, the band managed to find success after releasing its first album, Hopes and Fears, in 2004. Some of the album's most popular songs included "Somewhere Only We Know," "Bend and Break" and "Everybody's Changing." In 2006, Under the Iron Sea was released, bringing with it the hit songs "Is It Any Wonder?" and "Atlantic." That album was followed by Perfect Symmetry in 2008, which brought back the use of the guitar and also increased the band's reliance on synthesizers.

Strangeland was released in 2010, becoming Keane's fifth album in a row to garner the No. 1 spot on the UK Albums Chart. After The Best of Keane album was released in 2013, the members of the band announced that they would be taking a break to relax after several busy years of making music.

    Keane, awesome live

by bdoodles on 2012-06-22Sound Academy - Toronto

First time hearing Mystery Jets - really enjoyed their music and presence on stage. Second time seeing Keane at Sound Academy. You have to stand the whole time and it can get pretty crowded but if you get there early enough you can get really close to the stage and not have to pay for a premium ticket. Keane is a fantastic live band - sound, energy and really engaged the crowd. Fun guys!

Keane just get better and better

by Zeegie on 2012-06-22Sound Academy - Toronto

This is my fourth time seeing Keane live and they are simply amazing! Love the stuff from the new album, but they also played a bunch of the old stuff since that's what people are more familiar with. Great show and I will definitely go see them again and again (pun intended) ;) They also dedicated the show to Scott Johnson, the guy who was killed in the stage accident for Radiohead at Downsview Park a week earlier. He was a close friend of the band but as Tom said, "He wouldn't want the mood to be somber", so they still put on a fantastic show....

    Simply Amazing!

by Anonymous on 2012-06-22Sound Academy - Toronto

Keane gives it 120% effort each time they play! Excellent sound quality! This concert was a tribute to their fellow stage crew member that had passed away while setting up the Radiohead concert in Toronto.

Those guys are so talented and gifted, that they can make you enjoy every single song. After the tragedy at downsview park, they dedicated the concert to Scott Johnson, their fellow friend. Some songs are unforgettable, like "everybody's changing" or "cristal ball". Thanks guys.

    Keane was exceptional!!

by CherryBerry on 2012-06-21Sound Academy - Toronto

Overall Keane was AMAZING. Tom Chaplin was spot-on (as usual) and absolutely lovely, Tim Rice-Oxley was awesome (once again: as usual). They are amazing live. I would go see them again and if I could go to Quebec now, I'd go to their show again. Honestly, don't miss out, I'm repeating myself but: THEY WERE AWESOME. I will admit however, that being in a standing room was annoying.

    Keane

by JesseJamesY on 2012-06-21Sound Academy - Toronto

When they were great, they were a solid 10 out of 10. The only problem was that they played 3-4 minute versions of their songs. No break downs, no solos, just non stop singing. Don't get me wrong, he is an awesome singer, but just like chocolate too much non stop makes you want something different. Maybe a guitar player who could double up on some other instruments even synth or computer stuff could open up the show a bit. The occasional electric guitar solo and even if some ballads were vocals and accustic guitar the audience would feel refreshed. Know matter how great of a singer you are you can't sing non stop for two hours. A "show" needs more. Radio Head is a good example of a well rounded show.

They performed a good mix of material, with a good representation from Hopes & Fears and Strangeland. Great atmosphere and amazing response from the audience. It was - literally - hot!

    Incredible Show!

by LukeT on 2012-06-21Sound Academy - Toronto

Keane, did it again..They put on an Incredible show...with a tremendous amount of energy. Tom Chaplin is an incredible vocalist, and performer... My daughter, who sings, said she was blown away by his vocals, "he didn't hit one bad note" and still had the energy to run around the stage.

    Keane was amazing!

by usen on 2012-06-21Sound Academy - Toronto

This was an awesome event! Tom Chaplin is probably the best live performer in the world and it was a treat to listen to him live! Instruments sounded a bit off and harsh and that took away a bit from the experience.

    Amazing band!

by Lemonhead on 2011-11-06Molson Amphitheatre - Toronto

While Keane has somewhat unfairly flown under the radar of its more popular counterparts, like Coldplay, it is a band that definitely stands on its own, with its great sound, vision and originality. I love all the albums Keane has put out, on par with some of the best music outhere. Seeing them live was a treat and a pleasure! I am looking forward to repeating that experience as soon they return on tour.

    Glorious Keane

by Lemonhead on 2010-09-01Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

I have been following Keane ever since they burst onto the music stage with what I consider a lyrical and sonic masterpiece, their debut album "Hopes And Fears", populated with soaring ballads and bittersweet tracks. It did not seem very likely that their follow-up album would be in the same range and category. I am happy to say that those expectations were blown away when I had my first listenning of "Under The Iron Sea", a much darker and introspective piece of work than its predecessor. For me, it still remains my favourite album of the band. "Perfect Symmetry" showed that Keane as a band were willing to abandon their true and tried formula employed in recording of the first albums, and take a risk in so far as their craft. "Perfect Symmetry" is a more uplifting and optimistic album than the first two, but it is still underlayed with Keane's signature quality and variety, though a departure from their first two efforts. The recently released EP "Night Train" continues that experimental journey with great success. I have seen Keane perform live on a DVD I own, their perfomance at the O2 arena in London a few years ago. That concert was jaw dropping and it gave me a preview of what I could expect. Sure enough, what I saw in person, matched everything I expected from them. The guys were just superb, the quality of the perfomance unbelievable, they were funny, good humoured and happily interacted with the audience. I am glad I had the opportunity to seem them perfom live, it is something I won't soon forget. Keane might not be as well known to North American audiences, which is a shame, but in the rest of the world they are a top-ranked band and in Great Britain they are counted amongst the best. Unfortunately ever since Keane joined the musical universe, they have almost immediately been compared with and against their British counterparts Coldplay. Coldplay is a great band, and I was lucky to see them in concert last year. I love them. But I find it unfair that Keane always seems to opperate in their shadow. It is true that the band has had its ups and downs as well as battled a lot of personal demons, but so far they have prevailed and survived. They have their own sound and style and do not rest on the laurels of other bands. I wish them the best of luck and really look forward hearing more of what they have to offer...namely good music!

    Keane was amazing!

The venue for the performance was great. The changing shadows against the wooden panels from the light was a nice effect. Enjoyed the surprises - vocals from Tim Rice-Oxley and the new song! Overall, show from start to finish was great. Had a great time!

    Keane Rocks

by keanecrazee on 2010-08-06Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Keane never ceases to amaze me. Tom Chaplin's voice is out of this world. They just keep rocking. Too bad K'naan couldn't be there to rap with Tom. The whole group just puts out this great energy and vibe. Wish it didn't have to end.
