This was our first time going to the Queen’s Plate, so we didn’t know what to expect. Naturally, we imagined that paying $35 per ticket, plus fees and taxes, would mean that we’d at least get to see the horse races. Unfortunately not!
We didn’t realize there was a two-tier ticket system, where the lower tier is not allowed an unobstructed view of the track. There isn’t even standing room. There are places where you can stand, on the third level behind a glass partition, but it’s about six inches below the grandstands and everyone stands up for the final leg, so you can’t see anything. I’m 6’3” and this was true for me.
I don’t understand what you’re paying for, if not the horse racing. We tried to explain to staff (who wouldn’t let us stand even at least on the other side of the partition) that it was our first time there, and that we genuinely did not realize that we wouldn’t be able to see the horses, and they were completely unsympathetic. We weren’t rude—we know they were just doing their jobs. But it was a strange experience, like we were being actively dissuaded from attending the event.
Funnily enough, I guess these tickets are so useless that they didn’t even bother scanning ours on the way in. So if you want to go next year just pretend to have them—you’ll have about as good a time as people who spent $150 just to watch the races on TV.
