About
LYDIA LUNCH IN CONCERT:
For the past four decades, legendary post-punk singer, poet, and bandleader Lydia Lunch has been an uncompromising force of deliberate sonic aggression and anti-commercial sentiment. Lunch made a name for herself as part of the New York no wave scene of the early ‘80s, and her subversive and arty take on punk and new wave made her one of the decade’s most noteworthy underground figures. Today she remains as edgy and vibrant as ever, delivering blistering classics like “Atomic Bongos” and “Diddy Wah Diddy” with the same searing vocals and snarling attitude that made her an icon. Whether she’s barreling through hard-hitting tunes or reciting her scathing spoken word poetry, Lydia Lunch always takes ticket buyers on a wild ride through the grittiest trenches of the New York downtown scene.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Lydia Lunch, aka Lydia Anne Koch, was born in Rochester, NY, and at age 16 she moved to Manhattan with nothing but a small red suitcase. There, she fell in with a group of downtown musicians and artists who gave her the nickname “Lunch” because she often stole food for her friends. In 1976 she and fellow scene staple James Chance formed the no wave band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, a brief but extremely influential project that resulted in several seminal records. She made her solo debut in 1980 with the album Queen of Siam, a cult classic that featured her signature off-key vocals and noisy guitar technique. Lunch remained extremely prolific throughout the ‘80s, collaborating with a laundry list of alternative music heroes including Kim Gordon, Nick Cave, and Marc Almond. She continued to record and perform in the ‘90s, and in 1997 she published the autobiography Paradoxia. In 2013 Lunch released the album Retrovirus, a live recording of a performance at NYC’s Bowery Electric that proved she remains as sonically explosive as ever.
