    Not the Knopfler I expected

by redbeer on 2015-10-15The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

This will be harsh, but I am one of those who identify Mark with Dire Straits, and his set list was short and had like 5 Straits songs. I know he has to promote his new album, but compared to other old rockers, he departed too far from his best and is trying too much to focus only on the new stuff. I wouldn't be unhappy if his new songs included more guitar solos showcasing that side of his talent, but I've seen nothing of that. I really wanted to hear and see him live do his magic with that guitar like when he was in the Straits, but instead he has these ballads now full of fiddle and folkish sound. Still a nice show, it's quality music you'll get but very little of Straits. Check the setlist online from recent shows to know what to expect...

Mark Knopfler could have played all night!

by MaxieMax on 2015-10-13Massey Hall - Toronto

Last time I seen Mark Knopfler he was touring with Bob Dylan. Why I will never understand because he doesn't have to play second fiddle to anyone. I was so glad he came back to Toronto on his own because the concert was everything (!) I expected and more. Down to earth solid music with fullness; the band was absolutely amazing! Anytime you want to come back to Toronto Mark, I will be there!

    Mark Knopfler at Massey Hall

by purdyfine on 2015-10-09Massey Hall - Toronto

Mark and his band were fabulous. Unfortunately, the sound mix was over-the-top loud and bass-heavy, especially for such an intimate venue as Massey Hall. Mark's vocals were often difficult to hear, except for the more acoustic-based songs. I note that a similar criticism was made by a reviewer of Mark's Ann Arbor concert two days before, so one has to wonder what the sound people are trying to do. I had been looking forward to this concert for 6 months - it's a shame that the sound guys treated it like a stadium concert.

    Not what I expected

by trastabuga on 2015-10-07Massey Hall - Toronto

Maybe I was expecting too much from a guy like Mark Knopfler, but the show seemed rather dull and lifeless to me. The set was quite boring, many mournful Irish songs with a dash of “historical artifacts”. But even those “artifacts” like “Sultans of swing” were performed without passion and exiting guitar solos Mark is known for (those solos were quite rough and cliché). I would expect mark to surround himself with world class musicians, but the fiddle and the flutes were OK for a house band, but sub-par for a band sharing the stage with Mark. I wished the band had been tighter too. What I was missing most of all is drive and passion. C’mon, it’s still rock-n-roll, isn’t it? I haven’t paid 100$ to hear some mumbling and lackluster performance, especially from a superstar like Mark Knopfler. Now that Mark got my 100$ I hope he’ll use it wiser than I did.

    Multi talented groupo

by Anon on 2015-09-13Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Mark Knoffler is backed by an amazing group of musicians who play a diverse range of music and instruments. His music is enjoyable to listen to. However if you are going to see him to hear the old DIre Straits stuff you best listen to his current offerings first and see if they suit your fancy.

    not in dire straits here

by roadtrippercalgary on 2013-10-28Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

amazing event which again showcased knopflers guitar, songwriting and singing chops, his band are all equally amazingly talented musicians - the entire show is about the music, no theatrics, no hysterics - these are true musicians as compared to the performers out there pretending to be musicians. far better than when he toured with Dylan, which never provided a decent opportunity to enjoy his performance.

    MK is still the best

by MKFanForever on 2010-05-15Massey Hall - Toronto

I had seen MK in Buffalo just the day before the Toronto concert, and there were no surprises. The concert was fantastic just like the day before. The only thing different was that the seating in Massey Hall was lousy. MK played the whole concert sitting down (said he had "pinched" something), but didn't miss a beat. Kicked off with Border Reiver, my favourite song from the new album, and played two others (Get Lucky and Piper To The End). Added a nice assortment of his Dire Sraits and solo songs, including usual greats like Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road, Brothers in Arms, So Far Away, What it is, Sailing to Philadelphia, Speedway at Nazareth, Hill Farmer Blues, etc, and a fantastic version of the seldom heard Marbletown. His band is also as good as ever, and the flute player is one of the best. The concert was all about music. The sound was great, and there were very few "effects". Enjoyed it thoroughly, and and MK again proved that he is the greatest guitarist ever. For most guitarists just playing Sultans of Swing properly would be an accomplishment. MK has not only created this classic ageless hit, but he played it flawlessly at Age 60, while sitting down due to an injury, and he did it two days in a row (and probaly for the rest of the tour). I have seen MK concerts 7 times now, with my whole family, and and we have always loved it. My kids were not even born when Dire Straits existed, and it is still their favourite group by far. We are now anxiously waiting for my order of the Blu Ray version of "Alchemy" to arrive.

    phenomenal

by lucybout on 2010-05-08Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I saw Mark Knopler last year in Vancouver. It was the best concert I had ever been to. This years concert was just as memorable. He is my favourite guitarist. It seems to me he is a sweet and humble person. The crowd was very thankful for the three encores. They had to turn on the lights to get us to leave. Vancouver loves Mark Knopler and his band. I can still hear the sweet sound of his guitar.

    Loved Mark Knopfler!

by tinkywinky on 2010-05-04Massey Hall - Toronto

My husband is a huge fan. I was happy to get the tickets for his birthday and we had a great time. Mark was fantastic even though he had a pinched nerve. We totally enjoyed the evening and the venue - Massey Hall. (seating tight and bit small)

Like A night with An Old Friend!

    by 4Dancing on 2010-05-01Massey Hall - Toronto

The Mark Knopfler concert was more than I expected and left me wanting to hear more. He not only played most of my favs. but left me feeling like I had just spent an evening with an old friend. The atmosphere was warm and Mark looked totally relaxed through the sets even though he was seated on a swivel stool throughout the show as he had 'pinched something'. He and his amazing band touched the audience with their selections and made you feel like they truly cared about you and what you thought of their show. Hope he comes back to Toronto again soon 'cause I'll travel the 300 miles in a heartbeat!

    Knopfler: Money for Something

by sultanscamp on 2010-04-30Massey Hall - Toronto

I was so happy to have gotten the opportunity to attend Mark Knopfler & his band's sweet set last night at Massey Hall. I may not know all his music - though a fan beside me informed me what each song was - but I certainly got to know his music and his talent much more by seeing live what a proficient musical great he proved to be. Wow, so many of his songs have this ethereal and hypnotic buzz, and if not that then a pretty damn amazing beat. Did I say his lyrics rock as well? And one more thing, he is just a nice guy who happens to write and play exceptional music. Hey Mark, hope your leg gets better soon though it doesn't seem to stop you from rocking the house. Thanks for your show, and to your mates too!

    Mark Knopfler-what a dissapointment!

by Valmvac on 2010-04-30Massey Hall - Toronto

Last year concert was by far, better than this one. Let aside the sound that was great, grace to Massey Hall, no doubt here, the songs choosen for this show were, I guess, the longest and the slowest that you could possibly find in his discography and his voice was sometimes so low, so we couldn't even hear it....I feel sorry for Mark, I respect him as an artist and for the joy his music always offers me (now, when I listen to his CDs only), but his live performance yesterday really sucked! I guess it's that time for Mark, as for of anyone, in their artisitic life, when a decision to end life performances shall be made, just order to avoid to shoot the last bullet into his own reputation....After all, a sad moment, but it's unavoidable ...

    Not enough speakers

by Anonymous on 2010-04-30Massey Hall - Toronto

I was in the top balcony of Massey Hall, and the sound was muddled, and not loud. It looks like they did not want to spend to much money on a bigger sound system. Song selection was weak, could of had more recent music in the show. He had a pinched nerve, so mark sat for the whole show. The sound and lack of volume was brutal

    Magic Night

by GreyPower on 2010-04-30Massey Hall - Toronto

Mark and his band , played their hearts out for two hours and 2 encores. I had obstructed view seating and could have cared less; the guy come out with a sore back and give her hell all night. The show felt like we were all invited into his living room, graciously, for the evening. I will definitely go to see these guys again.
