About

Maxwell is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Composing music since he was just 17, the Brooklyn native’s discography is a sprawling testament to his musical prowess. At 23, his debut record, 1996’s Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album and eventually hit double platinum status. Since then, Maxwell has been credited — along with Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu — with ushering in the neo-soul movement and its sensibilities into mainstream popular music during the late 1990s. Over the course of his career, Maxwell has won three Grammy Awards, six Soul Train Music Awards and two NAACP Image Awards, in addition to having multiple Billboard Hot 100 and 200 charting tracks. He was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and Congressional Black Caucus in 2019 for "his innovative contributions to the music industry as a singer, songwriter, and producer."

A true performer who demonstrates his love of music and the craft of making it. My husband (then boyfriend) and I saw him in 2001 and this consent was our anniversary celebration almost 15 years later. We could not have asked for a more soulful, loving, entertaining evening. Music sees no ethnicity, race, or orientation. Maxwell is the definition of this. Maxwell, you will always be a part of our memories.

  • Maxwell was Super Amazing!!!

    by Patti123 on 2016-07-08Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This show was probably one of the best I have ever been to. The atmosphere was great but most of all, Maxwell gave 110% from the moment he stepped onto the stage. The genuine love that this man exudes leaves you at a loss for words. It was amazing to see so many people of different backgrounds and different walks of life. His voice is still as beautiful and strong as 20+ years ago. I have always loved and appreciated his music but after seeing him live, I have a totally new love and appreciation for the man himself. He had us all on our feet for most of the show. It felt like an honour to be in his presence. What an entertainer! Awesome show! Will definitely go see him again!

  • Maxwell is phenomenal!!

The best performance I have seen in a long long time! The show is personal and intimate and just delivers - song after song! A true musician who respects his craft and his fans!

by Toya on 2016-07-06Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first Maxwell concert and I was blown away! Was worth every penny! He has an excellent stage presence. He sang all of my favorite songs flawlessly and his band was awesome! What I loved was that he seemed so grateful and genuinely appreciative of his career and his fans. I LOVED it and will def be back in a heartbeat! I saw someone else posted he'll be back in the Fall so Ill be on the look out when he's here next:-)

  • Can't wait for his next show in T.O.

Maxwell, Maxwell, Maxwell. This was my first maxwell concert. I took my mom to the show for a late mother's day gift. Let's just say I got my life and then some. He started off the show with some of his newer stuff and ended with his older masterpieces. I enjoyed every minute of it. He says he's coming back in Fall and I will be there. The venue was a perfect size and the crowd was so much fun. Loved it

  • Maxwell never disappoints

by daynaG on 2014-07-11Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing! And Massey Hall was the perfect venue for Maxwell's soulful sound. He had the crowd captivated every second with his sexy voice and his sweet moves. The only thing I would critique is that I thought the sound on his mic could have been more clear. The band was incredible, but I felt their sound drowned out Maxwell just a little. That aside I would go see Maxwell again in a heartbeat when he returns to Toronto.

  • Maxwell is UNBELIEVABLE.

    by Jita8 on 2014-07-08Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

He is amazing!!! This was my third time seeing him and I will see him everytime he comes to Toronto. HIs dancing is awesome, he is soo interactive and engaging when he performs. He definitely has the crowd shouting and screaming with excitement while he also has everyone on the floor laughing out loud with his commentary! His voice sounds better and better with age! HIs music is timeless. The best performance I have seen so far! I LOVE MAXWELL!

  • How Disappointing...

    by JWA2009 on 2009-10-20Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

I was really disappointed about Maxwell show, especially has he chose to perform with a sore throat. I don't think I got value for money because he was not at his best. Off notes, croaky top notes were not good for a performer of Maxwell's caliber. Really expected more and had to go home to listen to his CDs to appreciate the music and man again!

  • Maxwell - I know it could have been better

by smoothmoka on 2009-10-05Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Amazing musicians...but Maxwell was not in his best form. He sounded hoarse, and struggled with a lot of his songs...but i'm glad he didn't cancel his show. All in all, it was a good but Maxwell could have been much better if rested his throat before the tour.

  • I remember when Maxwell was cool

by Anonymous on 2009-10-04Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

Maxwell's performance was beneath him - a great performer/singer, with beautiful, sincere lyrics, but what was presented in Toronto on the opening night of his tour, was a poor exhibition of juvenile antics. This didn't overshadow the fact that he lost his voice 45 minutes into the show - I felt disappointed, and sorry for him at the same time. Perhaps an arena-sized rock venue like ACC isn't his comfort zone, but I remember seeing him play this space with much success back on the NOW tour. Maxwell, stick to the theatres, music halls and classy, soulful stage shows that you've mastered and owned in the past.

  • Maxwell was fantastic .... sexy sexy sexy

by Staysteady on 2009-10-03Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell did not disappoint. Vocally he was wonderful even though toward the end of the evening you can hear the hoarseness in his voice but as a true artist he did not miss one note. Loved it, love him. Blessings Maxwell keep doing what you do and continue success always. Someone who immensely enjoys you. Thank you

  • In one word..SIGH!

by maxwellfanfromthestart on 2009-10-02Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Forget the technical difficulties, forget the fact that when he requested the house lightsto come on they didnt, forget the "hoarse" voice-Maxwell is AMAZING! His voice is and always will be like velvet. This man can sing the phone book and send shivers down my spine. He's sexy, smooth and oh so talented. And not to mention BEAUTIFUL to look at. Out of all the 4 concerts I've been to of his, this was by far the BEST one. The energy was amazing and maybe that was because I was literally leaning on the stage a foot away from him, but like I said, this man can sing. His band is great! The only thing I can complain about is that he didn't sing long enough. I could hear this man sing 24/7! Can't wait 'til the next concert Maxwell!!
