About

Maxwell is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Composing music since he was just 17, the Brooklyn native’s discography is a sprawling testament to his musical prowess. At 23, his debut record, 1996’s Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album and eventually hit double platinum status. Since then, Maxwell has been credited — along with Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu — with ushering in the neo-soul movement and its sensibilities into mainstream popular music during the late 1990s. Over the course of his career, Maxwell has won three Grammy Awards, six Soul Train Music Awards and two NAACP Image Awards, in addition to having multiple Billboard Hot 100 and 200 charting tracks. He was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and Congressional Black Caucus in 2019 for "his innovative contributions to the music industry as a singer, songwriter, and producer."

  • Maxwell and Common, great show.

by kharmar on 2009-10-02Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Common was great, have never seen him before.. awesome! Maxwell had some technical difficulties and problems with his earpiece, which was a bit distracting.. but after a few songs in.. they seemed to settle in and was a great show after that.. He seemed to really enjoy the fans and the show, despite problems with his voice.. thanks for the show!

The very first city on the Black Summers' Night tour and it totally did not disappoint! All three performers came through with great sets, and represented RnB at it's best! Even though Maxwell's voice went hoarse at the end, it was still a great show all around!

I was really impressed with Maxwell, considering he has not been on the scene for such a long time. He really does have a great sex appeal and he had both men and women in the air.

by Brownskinanne on 2009-09-29Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I was in awe when Maxwell appeared on stage! The stage, the lightening and the atmosphere was absolutely perfect! I was very impressed with how Maxwell interacted with his fans and how humbled and grateful he appeared! I have been to a lot of concerts in the past couple of years but I must say that this one was by far one of my most FAVOURTIE and unforgottable concerts! Maxwell can SING and neo-soul is definitely my kind of music. Chrisette Michelle and Common were great choices for opening the show. I will definitely be attending another concert that Maxwell puts on!

The show was absolutely fantatstic. Three of my favorite artistes in one concert,.,.what more could I ask for. Loved Chrisette Michele but felt a little sad that she only did 3 songs. Common was throrough....he had me on my feet for his entire set.He had lots of energy.Performed some of my favorite tracks. His DJ was fantastic on the 1s & 2s. Maxwell..in a word...amazing! Maxwell's band was tight ..his guitarist is serious.

  • Maxwell was Magical!!!!!!

by Kimb on 2009-09-29Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

First off, he picked great opening acts. They got the crowd going. Chrisette and Common were a great build up to the main event. When Maxwell entered, the night began, and the crowd came alive. Maxwell is one of the few real vocal artists left with a great stage presence. He sang a mix of his old and new songs in just the right flow to introduce and reminisce. The depth of his voice, songs and his power on the stage were incredible. He did a beautiful job, and you could tell we all had missed him and needed him back. He looked so happy to be there, and it was sooo much fun!!! Thank you Maxwell. You were awesome!!! Kim :D

  • Maxwell rocked our world!

    by mirwex68 on 2009-09-29Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell put on a show that was sexy, beautiful and incredibly entertaining. Some new stuff, mostly old stuff that made the audience scream with pleasure. His style and the delivery of his music is smooth and beautiful. I enjoyed every single minute of his show.

  • Maxwell's Masterpiece

by Rayne on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The night couldn't have started off any better with Chrisete Michele and Common but when the long interlude made way for the main attraction and fabulousness that is Maxwell the cold I was suffering from didn't seem that bad. My girls and I were speechless at the attention to detail in the black and white backdrops showcasing his love for music and art. The fact that he only had 1 female back up singer and that all his male back up singers played their individual solo instruments with such wonderful pitch and tone made me wonder why I gave up playing the trombone. His aura on stage is like nothing I have ever witnessed. His ability to be one with the crowd was heartfelt, every woman in the ACC wished they had enough money to drop on those floor seats and were kicking themselves for not. Men were holding and dancing with their ladies while singing along to some vintage Maxwell records. His voice wasn't 100% but he gave it his all and he showed us he appreciated it with each drop of sweat left on the stage. As a true lover of music this man in concert is a rare glimpse into real music at its best. A true musician and performer perfects his craft and the fact that a man in 2009 can come out in a 2 piece suit and not bare his chest once shows wherein his heart lies. A classic, timeless performance from one of the best of our time.

  • Maxwell was amazing

Even though his voice was a little hoarse, he still sounded amazing. Common was really good. The only thing that could have been better is if between artists there was better music playing.

  • The night my world stopped...

by soopafluvious on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Spent all week looking for outfits because I went to the concert and then the Official After party at Maro. Was stoked and ready to go when friday came around. Went to the concert but missed Chrisette Michelle. Saw Common and he was really good. Brought us back to the basics with some ol skool hip hop tunes. Did a little rhyme repping our city and talking about the tour as well. it was real nice. Then it was time for Maxwell's stage to be set up. When he came out the audience went wild! We were on our feet screaming with the rest of them. Not gonna lie. He played a lot from the new album but he still did Woman's work and some of the songs from his previous albums. A girl got on stage and stood beside him during one song and security came and took her away. It was really funny. i wish i had it on tape. Beautiful concert, wonderful set, Common as an opening act was awesome, just watching Maxwell in his groove doing his thing, singing to my soul was intense! If I I didn't have a job and had the money to do it, I would follow him from city to city to watch him perform and experience it like the first time all over again. Seen him before and will see him again. Every time he comes to T DOT I will be there. No doubt. A must see. Love him. He stayed for about 2 hours at the after party too. :) Sorry no pics on this computer :(

  • Maxwell Concert

    by Nappychick1980 on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the Maxwell concert on Friday September 25! Even though he was away from the music scene for a long time, he's still got it. He did not miss a beat with his singing and his performance. I saw him back in 2002 and i thought that was good, but tonight was AMAZING! Common and Chrisette Michele were great as well. Thank you Maxwell, Common and Chrisette Michele for a lovely evening.

  • Maxwell's Out of this World Concert !!

by Kareninsky on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Even though this concert started a half hour late .. it was well worth the money and time. Chrisette Michelle .. sang 4 tunes .. I loved them all but really wished her set was longer .. so that I as well as the rest of the audience could really absorb her full potential .. I know I will be buy her cd. Her voice blew me away. Common was definitely not common.. we all moved in our seats and from one tune to the next we were all with him on this fabulous ride .. great performance Common.. Again .. another cd(s) I will be buying. Maxwell from beginning to end .. took my breath away. I'm so glad he didn't cancel the concert .. he spoke of his hoarse voice (which we could definitely detect) .. and apologized profusely which we all know he didn't need to because he sang spectacularly. We all loved the way he used the main stage as well as the v-shaped secondary stage that forked out into the floor seating areas (I was a lucky girl as and my friend had 10th row floors ..close to the stage). Maxwell would sink into the floor at one point of the "V" and then appear out of the floor in another area. Loved it !!! For a guy with a hoarse voice ... he was sweet enought to give us one encore .. "Ascension .. Don't Ever Wonder".

  • Maxwell still mad live and hot as ever!!!

  • Maxwell was a masterpiece on stage!

by Paisley on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Once again Maxwell has amazed us with his incredible charm, sensuous ways and phenomenal music. Although under the weather, Maxwell still performed at his best engaging the audience in the way he always does. Okay fine, we helped sing along when he needed our help. I had your back Max. As a longtime fan from back in the day, it was amazing to see his show transition from small venues to a larger setting. Witnessing the progression of the music and live shows has been a real trip. Maxwell you rocked the T dot once again!
