by diancu on 2010-11-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Nice show, a little hard to understand the dialogs, easy plot, an ok evening. Beautiful costumes, some very nice songs/dances, very enthuziastic group of young artists. Definitely not extraordinary but a very pleasant evening.

    The Merchants of Bollywood

by EdwardBOFMCA on 2010-11-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I liked the show, but I came out with a huge headache after watching it for two hours. And the jokes were really not that funny except for one: You first give your love an engagement ring. Then you give her a marriage ring. And then comes the suffer ring.

    Disappointed show

by GChow on 2010-11-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I was expecting the show would like Bollywood Dream. I was very disappointed, it was like putting a traditional India film on stage. Too much dancing and too less acting. Dancers and actors were good but props were so primitive. May be the story was told in the lyrics of the songs. Unfortunately, I am not Indian and cannot understand anything al all. Thus, start getting boring in 35 minutes. 2nd half is a bit better. May be the dance and costume was different. I recommend to add subtitle display if the lyrics in English are important. I will not be interested to attend another one if the performance is similar to this one.

Total dhamal. Foot-tapping music and dance numbers. Only criticism - the song selction was outdated.

    More choreography than story

by Miffy on 2010-11-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I didn't really know what to expect going into this show, I just knew the basic storyline from the reviews. What ensued was a series of group dance numbers set to Bollywood hits from the last 40 years, with a little bit of a backstory thrown in after every 3 sequences about a girl trying to follow in the footsteps of her famous grandfather. I guess I was hoping for a show of original numbers that fit into and expanded the story, more like the Sound of Music. Instead this is a story made to flimsily string together a bunch of established hits, as was done in Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages and We Will Rock You. This is lazy showmaking and an annoying trend in musical theatre. The leads were good, the dancing was very good (especially the gymnast they cast for Udhay) but they couldn't elevate the material beyond what it was.

    Needed more.....

by FairTrade on 2010-11-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The first act was good, not great. The second act was disappointing. I was expecting more dancers on stage the whole time. The story line was patchy. The quality of dancing was fantastic!!! It's a great cast of dancers... they just need more of them.

    Merchants of Bollywood were spectacular

by jroohi on 2010-11-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The show truly held up to my expectations. It was pure energy and fun from start to finish. It was amazing to see a few generations of dance together into one action packed story telling yet very entertaining experience. The glitz and the glow of the costumes added an extraordinary spice to this wonderful recipe.

    Merchants of Bollywood was fantastic!

by DHA1 on 2010-11-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

This show had everything. A real story, comedy, beautiful costumes, one of the best soundtracks I have heard, and incredible choreography executed to perfection. It was so great that I went to see it three times while it was in town. I run a dance company and some of both my students and dancers also went back three times. Do yourself a favour and go see this show.
