05-24-2011:
Our tickets indicated doors open at 8pm- the venu had limited seating so we got there at 6:30pm and waited in line- as promised, doors opened at 8pm. One of the security guards out front had warned the entire line, stating that "Miss Lauryn Hill is a bit of a rockstar and chooses to perform when she wants to" and that previously, she had been extremely late for a show. He indicated that her set time in Vancouver was for 10:45pm.
Inside played old-school hip hop and r&b music and finally at 10:45pm came out her OPENING ACT- the Hot 8 Brass Band. They were great to watch, but at this point I was irritated and logged onto ticketmaster to read other reviews of her show... I was so disappointed to see all the bad reviews but I tried to let it go and have my own experience.
I lost track of time... only to realize that at 11:30pm a DJ came out to hype the crowd with tributes to Nate Dogg, Reggae Music, and other hip hop. Honestly, this was the BEST part of the night!
Finally at midnight, Miss Lauryn Hill shows up explaining that there was crazy traffic because of the "Canucks Game"- but here I am thinking, you've known about doing this show all damn day, you couldn't leave an hour earlier from where ever you were to get here!?
Loud band, louder instruments and shouting- this was her concert. I don't know if she felt that because she was "late" she had to fit in as much as possible... but she took all of the songs we love and sped them up x3 to the point where they were unrecognizable and at times could barely hear her because the band was SO LOUD.
As a fan, a big fan, I felt so disappointed because I have seen other artists like India Arie at this venue before- 2wice actually, and she was amazing. She doesn't know her settings- for the band she had, she needed a bigger venue or a lower volume setting. I know Miss Hill as a singer, a poet, a true artist- all she did was rap and scream.
12:45pm and I had enough, I actually walked out and vowed to never buy a concert ticket for her again- definitely not worth $100.00 a ticket! That is just ridiculous, and for that price, I expected an intimate setting, with a musician and artist who was going to bring us back to her first and second album- the reasons why we fell in love with her to begin with.
Love you Lauryn, but I love my money more and I will NEVER EVER see you live again.
Step your game up!
