About

LAURYN HILL IN CONCERT:

As a member of the Fugees and a decorated solo artist, the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill broke new ground for female artists in hip hop, becoming one of the most dominant musical figures of the '90s and the first hip-hop artist to take home a Grammy for Album of the Year. With new material and a critically-acclaimed tour in 2013, Hill proved she hasn't lost her edge – or her voice – taking the stage with a full backing band and breathing new life into her catalog of hits with updated arrangements, extensive improvisation, and dramatic readings of her socially conscious verses.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Do not sleep on Lauryn! She is back. She was on point! This is what music has been missing!"

"The vibe was continuously raised to higher heights. What is quickly apparent is that this is no traditional act – from the beginning a very unique and nostalgic vibe is set through the familiar set list, but against brand new arrangements that drive the classic material head first into the multi-genre-infused present."

"Epic performance by Lauryn Hill. She killed it in every way possible. So happy I was able to be a part of it."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hill rose to international fame when the Fugees' seminal 1996 album The Score topped charts around the world, earning a Grammy for her spellbinding cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly." The group’s dissolution in 1997 did nothing to hinder her success – 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, her only solo studio album to date, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, landed a No. 1 single with “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, and took home five Grammys, including Album of the Year. A seasoned performer, Hill continued to impress fans in 2013 with her substance-over-style approach, building excitement for the much-anticipated 2014 release of her sophomore album Letters From Exile.

Why did I pay for that???

    by Cordelia30 on 2011-01-25Métropolis - Montreal

The doors were supposed to open at 8pm, then it was changed to 9:30pm. Ms Hill got on stage with a rocky voice around 0:15am! There was no opening act, but at least the DJ was good. It appeared as if she had never rehearsed with the band. She kept wiping her face the hole time and didn't seem to be happy to be there. At 1:15am, she had sung only 4 songs, or should I say 2 songs with 2 versions of each back to back! How unprofessional! The remixed versions of her songs were terrible. There was an atrocious keyboard solo... We weren't sure if the show was about to be over at that point, since we've heard that she stays on stage no longer than 1,5hr. People were leaving, but since Montreal is a very good and patient crowd, the majority stayed. At some point around 1:50am, she woke up and suddently decided to perform. With energy, she did all the Fugees hits. The crowd was feeling the vibe and she was finally doing her job properly. If you consider going to see Lauren Hill live, go only if you get in for free or if you get a really big discount!

    I'm in awwww

by IllaJ on 2011-01-25Sound Academy - Toronto

Hearing about her 3 hour late show in New York, I said, Lauryn can't do that to T.O. fans - we're unforgiving! I was hesitant and really did not know what to expect from her show. Was it going to be a DJ spinning old Fugees tracks and her rhyming over them as many artists do? What the fans got was much more. She delivered. And yes, there were times I did not recognize the song or could not sing-a-long because she re-made classics in a unique way, but she proved to me she is a high calibre artist. Remixes upon remixes! I'm thinking about the 'X-Factor'. She conducted her band and expected her band to keep up. She went toe for toe with her keyboard artist, delivery 5 different harmonies to his baseline. I was in awww, and when I looked around, her true fans were in aww of her work on stage. Unbelievable. For a two hour show of that workmanship, I would suggest it should have been at a Massey Hall or Sony Centre because it was a performance and not a hip hop show. After 5 hours of standing, bravo Ms. Lauryn Hill

    by MusicFan1999 on 2011-01-25Métropolis - Montreal

The show was amazing! Her musicians were out of this world good. Lauryns voice was better than her tracks....the only problem was how late she was.She was 3h30 hours LATE...not acceptable. Because the concert ended with a hit song (that thing) everyone forgot about the 3h30 waiting period prior to that.

    MS. Lauryn Hill's Epic Delivery!

by MademoiselleGigi on 2011-01-25Métropolis - Montreal

After waiting over 3 hours for MS. Hill to appear on stage, her entrance at 12:32AM -Monday morning- made my restlessness, fatigue, and irratibility come to a screeching halt! I was not only star struck by her presence, but moved by her musical talent. In those 2 hours, Lauryn rocked it, and her soulful voice resonated. This was my first Lauryn Hill concert. The first of many more, I am sure.

    Great second half

by SMdb on 2011-01-25Sound Academy - Toronto

Ms. Lauryn Hill still got it ! Great voice! First half of the concert was a bit odd, most songs were remixed so much that i couldnt figure out which songs they were or if they were new material. Second half was amazing.. all classics and her voice was phenomenal !! so happy i got to see her live

    Miseducation Indeed

by MusiqueFan on 2011-01-24Sound Academy - Toronto

I had never seen her before. It was the ability to be in the same space as I've adored her so. The concert was simply disappointing. The Toronto star article summarized it pretty accurately. It was like being at a jam session or practice for the band. Unprofessional and disrespectful to the people that live in this city and support the live music here. She didn't bother to have an opening act, not even a local act. We all knew she would be late and could have an opening act but didn't. It was a Saturday night and we were let down although we all swayed and vibed to at least one track.

A true spectacle. After years on hiatus Ms. Lauryn Hill returns to rock the socks off of the sound academy, and she does not disappoint! Her complete command of the crowd was incredible, the blaring infusion of instruments that pulsed through the venue aided by the euphoric lights made for an amazing experience that put a modern twist on familiar tunes. The crowd was diverse, and all these thing made for a night not to be forgotten. The only reason I give this 4 stars is because of Ms. Hills' tardiness. She is notoriously late and this night was no exception, hitting the stage @ the stroke of midnight for a 9pm slotted show. All in all, a great show, and highly recommended

    Lauryn Hill was absolutely terrible!!!

by CSoul on 2011-01-24Sound Academy - Toronto

Firstly she arrived 3 hours late!!! Which is atrocious...the performance was poor at best. She altered the songs so much they were unrecognizable and the band was way too loud. It was a waste of money. We ended up leaving the concert half way through and I would love to have my money back. Never again will I pay to see her again!

How could lauryn be the best (10yrs ago) and worst

    by panda8472 on 2011-01-24Sound Academy - Toronto

Felt like I went to a rock show. No one was dancing and just standing there taking it in. It was like a rehearsal and she was giving orders in the middle of the songs. I've been to jam sessions but this felt more frantic less inclusive. The piano player couldn't string up a decent solo or start up the piano solo for That thing on time. I was truly disappointed. I didn't want Lauryn to play exactly like she did years ago. I love a good remix as long as it was a good Re-Mix! The same rock/techno fusion for a few songs was just plain lazy.

Lauryn Hill was amazing!!! She did what no one expected her to...she changed her songs! Wow! Most of them were pretty damn good too. She played her rearranged Miseducation for the first hour, the haters left, and then she rewarded the true fans with some amazing Fugees, some amazing covers and ended with Turn the Lights down Low and Doo Woop That Thing. Truly an amazing concert.....can't wait to see her again!!!

How could you do this to us L. Boogie!?!

by acandace on 2011-01-24Sound Academy - Toronto

Lauryn looked and sounded great! I just had no idea what she was singing! She changed the songs that won her 5 Grammys to the point of being unrecognizable! It makes me sad...
