About

Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1983, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are one of the most critically acclaimed post-punk bands of the last 30 years. Following the end of their previous group, the Birthday Party, singer-songwriter Cave and drummer Mick Harvey began the Bad Seeds. Initially joined by Barry Adamson on bass and Blixa Bargeld on guitar, the band has seen a number of personnel changes over the years with the one constant being the creative force of Cave himself.
Exploring the themes of love and religion, the band’s debut album, From Her to Eternity, was released in 1984. Featuring a cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “In the Ghetto,” presented in the band’s inimitable style, the record showcased the deep impact of Cave’s baritone voice. Quickly following second album, The Firstborn is Dead, third release Kicking Against the Pricks saw the band first find fame in the UK and Ireland. Critics also began to sit up and take notice, with Cave’s prose-like approach to songwriting bringing welcome comparisons with Leonard Cohen. This narrative style was seen again on 1986’s Your Funeral…My Trial, before the beginning of a two year break from recording for the band.
Four more albums were released in the early ‘90s in addition to the band making a range of high-profile US festival appearances. The album Murder Ballads, released in 1996, became a critical success for the Bad Seeds and saw songwriter Cave explore two of his favorite themes: death and violence. The album featured vocals from Kylie Minogue on the single, “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” and the success of the song helped make Murder Ballads the band’s best -selling album so far. 1998 saw the release of No More Shall We Part, with further albums Nocturama and Abbatoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus being released in the early ‘00s.
Following a number of sell out tour dates in 2005 and 2006, Nick Cave’s musical achievements and creative contribution saw him inducted into Australia’s ARIA Hall of Fame. Not for the first time in his career, Cave then moved from music to movies, writing both the screenplay and soundtrack for John Hillcoat’s 2012 film, Lawless. Early 2013 saw the release of Push the Sky Away; the band’s first output in nearly five years, it was widely acclaimed by fans and critics alike.

  • Best Concert - A Personal Account

by Campaigner on 2014-07-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

"How do you describe the indescribable? "Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds" performance at The Jubilee Auditorium will go down as one of the best acts to ever pull through the venue. Nick, acting every bit the mad preacher called for people to gather close to the stage, and the crowd was glad to oblige him. He clearly was feeding from the crowds energy. It worked, as the entire auditorium was electric. I was tempted to go forward, but I was in perfect position from 13 rows back to become enveloped in Cave's hypnotic hold. During "Higg's Boson Blues", I had the urge to go forth into the throngs of people surrounding the stage. Then I stopped, as Cave was making his way down my row. "Could this be?" I somehow knew he was heading towards me, right in the center of my row. He propped himself up atop the chair backs walking to the middle of the row as people steadied him. It was like a beacon of light had descended upon me as he grasped my outstretched hand. I am still reeling from the warmth and power of the moment...truly unforgettable - (and I'm a guy). That moment, the whole concert was beyond compare. The concert was not full of Cave's best known songs, yet I don't think anybody left disappointed because they didn't hear their favorite song. From the sonic wonder that "The Bad Seeds" unleashed into the newest "Jubilee Street" to the utter hush of the crowd for "God Is In The House", it was a great set. I've seen an enormous number of concerts, and I never thought I could say this about any act in particular, but this was my favorite...ever.

  • Nick Cave is the Greatest Man and Musician Alive!

by Nizza on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Whether you like Nick Cave or just great music, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience both. I absolutely adore Nick Cave so it was an awesome treat to see him live. However, I'm sure even people not intimately acquainted with his music would greatly enjoy his show. He is unique, talented, charismatic, inspiring, but at the same time just a vulnerable human. It's not just his music, it's his dancing and interaction with the audience that makes the evening memorable. If you can, get a seat on the main floor - he might stop right next to you when he casually strolls along the auditorium. I was ready to jump from the balcony with envy when I saw this! It's hard to explain Nick Cave's magic in words, it has to be lived. This is THE show you have to see.

  • I'm too old for Nick Cave anymore.

by Anonymous on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

The worst sound I've heard in the Jube ever ... For both the opening act and Nick Cave. What idiots were working the board that night?! Although I own some Nick Cave albums I heard nothing I recognized before I got up and walked out. I like his ballads and dark stories on CD but the bad sound made the lyrics completely muddy and incomprehensible. And the louder stuff was just too loud for this aged hipster.

  • A religious experience

by Kezia on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

This was the most incredible show - and probably experience - that I have ever seen. Nick Cave turned the audience in Calgary into a cult of followers, worshiping at the altar of the Church of Nick Cave. I am still reeling from the show, as is everyone I've spoken with. And dear lord, can the man wear a suit. I want to do it over and over again, and it causes me physical pain to think that I can't. Go. Now.

  • I'm a Bad Seed Disciple

by wacalder on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing Nick Cave perform, and it was amazing! I don't know what book he preaches form because there are equal parts God and love and Lucifer's vices and death, but the level of spiritual fervor was high in this house. Sound at the Jube was fantastic! Only question: has Nick never heard of wireless mikes before? Full time job untangling those cords! Hope he gets back to Calgary again one day.

  • No one is like Nick Cave!

by Piper1 on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Blown away! The energy, the voice, audience interaction cannot be beat. The man puts on the best live show I've seen. Hope he comes back soon. Was worried the venue wasn't right but they let everyone stand & rush the stage. An amazing night!

  • A treat for the Calgary audience!

by SarahYYC on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds never fail to disappoint! With a mix of songs from their huge back catalogue and music from their most recent release 'Push The Sky Away' they stunned the crowd with their huge sound and impressive musicianship. Nick wooed the crowd, joining us up close during 'Stagger Lee', 'From Her to Eternity' and 'Push the Sky Away'. On my way out I heard one, hopefully new inductee to the Church of Cave, say 'I think I'm going to have nightmares tonight'! But, judging by the crowd reaction, Nick and the Bad Seeds won some new fans that night. This show was one of those truly memorable experiences that will live on in the minds and hearts of those true fans who attended.

  • Cave in the Roof!!

by ShowHound on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

I like Nick Cave, mainly know the Murder Ballads album and his bigger hits.... however, I LOVED his concert!!! I knew the man was a dude, but the level of COOL and how he can ROCK took me a bit off guard. I would recommend his concert to anyone... if you're a fan and think he's getting on in age? Phhhfffff, GO TO THE SHOW!... if you don't know him well, but enjoy his hits? GOT TO THE SHOW!... If you've never heard of him, but enjoy expressive musical artists with style? You will NOT be disappointed! Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are alive and well, and ROCKIN' IT!! Well done, Gents!!!!

  • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were outstanding!

by geno35 on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

First time in Calgary and what a show! I knew three songs but all the songs were great! I could tell from the outset that this band was not lightweight. They were tight and confident and dominating. A great concert that shook me awake.

  • Nick Cave! What a showman!

by Yannarra on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

This was on my brother in laws' bucket list, so we went with him, and oh wow. What a show. He knows how to play up a crowd, and his interactions with the crowd caught me by surprise. The age differences in the auditorium also threw me. Seems his music spans quite a few generations. If he ever comes back to Calgary, I am SO going!

  • Amazing

  • The Right Venue

by rumblefish on 2013-03-24Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Nick Cave several years ago at Koolhaus and can honestly say Massey Hall was the right selection for his style of music. He was soo much more active on stage and with the crowd. Moved better than Jagger.
