About

NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS IN CONCERT:

Following the 2009 dissolution of pioneering Britpop band Oasis, primary songwriter and lead guitarist Noel Gallagher didn't give fans any time to lament his split from brother and longtime collaborator Liam. Instead he hit the ground running with his solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, a harder-edged continuation of his work with the late great band. Since then Noel has proven himself quite the frontman, impressing audiences around the globe with rollicking performances of tunes like "Dream On" and "Do the Damage". He throws in a few classic Oasis numbers like "Don't Look Back in Anger" and "Supersonic" for good measure, ensuring fans both old and new get to rock out to their favorite jams.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Noel Gallagher was born and raised in Manchester, England, where he had a fairly turbulent childhood. He picked up the guitar in his teens as a way to pass time while on probation for robbing a corner shop, imitating the songs he heard on the radio before moving on to songs of his own. He was expelled from high school at 15 and worked various construction jobs before striking up a friendship with Manchester band Inspiral Carpets and joining them as a roadie. Upon returning from the group's US tour he joined his brother Liam's band The Rain, a psych-tinged rock outfit that would eventually become Oasis. Noel and Liam made their debut as Oasis in 1994 with the album Definitely Maybe, a critical and commercial success that topped the UK Albums charts and spawned four popular singles. Their sophomore album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was an even bigger smash, topping charts around the world thanks to instant classics like "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova". All told, the band reached No. 1 in the UK with all seven of their albums before long-simmering fraternal tensions drove the brothers apart in 2009. Noel lost little time continuing his rock reign -- in 2010 he formed Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, releasing a self-titled debut album to the top of the British charts the following year. With their sophomore album Chasing Yesterday generating buzz in 2015, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their next round on the road.

    Too short

    by Mauricio on 2023-07-07

The concert was too short, only 1 hour. 🤬 I was expecting at least a 90 minutes concert and more songs from OASIS.

    Great !

    by Sal (Toronto) on 2023-07-07

I’ve seen Noel Gallagher 4 different times. Good show but shortest concert of the 4. No encore! Garbage opened and in my opinion stole the night. Standing Ovation! Great night with 2 outstanding bands.

    Mailed in in

    by Tootall on 2023-07-07

I love Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds... I have seen them several times, having said that they totally mailed it in. 5 songs from the new record started the show and ONLY TWO of their older stuff. 5 straight Oasis a Dylan cover and then another Oasis song. All of this in 60 minutes. The show ended 20 minutes before the venues 11pm curfew with no encore. Noel looked tired and bored. His voice is still strong but he totally MAILED it in.

    Wonderful Wonderwall!

    by Moxie Mum on 2023-07-06

I actually went to see Garbage because Shirley Manson is incredible! I lived in England in the 90s and appreciate the Oasis singalongs in pubs, but was never a fan. Noel was incredibly entertaining and so likeable! I have been to a ton of concerts, but I have never seen a performer interact so much and so kindly with an audience. It made me respect him and in turn his music and art! A show definitely worth seeing!

    Third time's a... little short

    by Geoff Morton on 2023-07-06

This was our third time seeing Noel Gallagher, so you know he's worth showing up for. A full concert in 2015 and another half concert in 2019, split with the Smashing Pumpkins. This time was with Garbage. In 2019 his set ended while it was still light out, as he was the opener for the Pumpkins. This time he was the main act, and the only reason I bring that up is the unsatisfyingly abrupt ending he gave the show was jarring. Especially since the ever-visible clock on the wall beside him showed he could have played for another fifteen minutes before being obliged to shut down the show at 11. But nope, at the beginning of Don't Look Back In Anger he announced "this is the last song"... and proceeded to play that last song and walk offstage. No encores, no drawing it out, no giving the crowd a real finale... just an abrupt announcement that the show's over at the end of the song. I looked it up on Setlist.fm, and the show he played for us was the same show he's played for everyone. With a double bill, you're obviously not going to get a full two hour show, and his and Garbage's total playing time did amount to 2 hours and 15 minutes. So I can't say that we didn't get our money's worth in terms of the time. But there was something just a little disappointing about how it ended like that. We were left wanting more... not in that good way, but in the "it just didn't quite feel all the way there"kind of way. And we weren't the only ones. Many other people grumbled on their way out. Okay, that out of the way... how was the show in and of itself? It was really good. He opened up with five tracks from Council Skies, and they were all really well done. The band was tight and most of the new songs felt like classics that belonged alongside his other High Flying Birds best. There were, of course, some Oasis tracks as well, although it was mostly lesser known B-sides from The Masterplan, which were totally awesome as well. And then, of course, a couple of the warhorses. Live Forever was absolutely gorgeous. An already excellent song, he had done something really fresh layering in three or four women backup singers (they were blocked by speakers so I only got glimpses of them)... they did some choral work counterpointing his singing in Live Forever and it was absolutely stunning. I wish I had it available to listen to in my collection. Aaaaand then he ended it. Next song's the last. So of course, it was a joy to hear. But in a sense, considering he's been doing this for thirty years, you would have thought he'd play the crowd a bit, build the final act of the show to more of an emotional climax and send everyone home singing. But, for whatever reason, he didn't feel like doing that. On the way out of the show, some buskers were playing Champagne Supernova. One classic that you would have imagined he would have included in the set list. And the buskers had hundreds of people gathered around singing along with them. And you could feel the emotional overflow from them. This was something they actually wanted from Noel, this classic, this essential artifact from so many youths. And for whatever reason he chose not to give it to them... leaving it to some buskers to actually do it. It was actually a bittersweet way to end the evening.

    Musical Magic

    by Stramboli on 2023-07-06

Excellent show. No complaints with the sound quality and mixing. Great audience participation enhanced the listener’s experience. Catchy lyrics and great vocal presentation. Thoroughly enjoyed this outdoor venue on a great summer night.

    Amazing! Great accessibility

    by Susan on 2023-07-06

We really enjoyed the show. Both Garbage and Noel Gallagher put on great shows. When we arrived at Budweiser Stage, we were greeted outside the venue by a very helpful staff member who spotted my mobility scooter and took us through the entrance and to our seats. When they saw that my accessible seating spot was near, but not beside my family members, we were moved to another area where we were able to all sit together and it was also much closer to the stage. The only downside was the process for purchasing accessible seating, which is very cumbersome for Budweiser Stage

    Amazing, but too short!

    by Raph on 2023-07-06

Noel and crew gave an excellent performance, with a great mix of new and older material from high flying birds and oasis. My only gripe: he played for an hour which seems very short given the superbe catalog.

    Better Than Expected

    by Terri on 2023-07-06

Garbage was better than expected. Noel’s set would have been better if he sang WonderWall. He is a fantastic songwriter. Drummer superb. Overall a pleasant evening.

    Great Concert but...

    by The Chief on 2023-07-06

Great concert from Noel and the band. Live Forever was the most amazing version to date. Just seemed a very short concert. 14 songs and no encore. Needed 3 to 5 more to make this an amazing night.
