About

Opera Atelier is North America’s premier period opera/ballet company, producing the opera, ballet and drama of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. While drawing upon the aesthetics and ideals of the period, Opera Atelier goes beyond “reconstruction” and infuses each production with an inventive theatricality that resonates with modern audiences. Led by founding artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg since 1985, Opera Atelier has garnered acclaim for its performances at home as well as in the United States, Europe and Asia.

    Bravo

by canfan on 2011-11-01Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Rather than the normal dreary take on Don Giovanni, Opera Atelier gives us Opera Buffa. This is a satirical romp through the lush music of Mozart with physical acting on a par with the rich voices. This is opera as it was intended to be, for the audience, not to soothe some inner angst of the director. This is opulent entertainment aimed at the audience not at the rarified altitude of the critics. This opera was written at a time when opera was not reserved for the rich and famous, but the parvenu of the common man. Bravo, Opera Atelier, Bravo.

Excellent opera, perfect costumes, some voices gr8

    by 1l3k2j3k4l2k3j43k2l3k4j on 2011-10-31Elgin Theatre - Toronto

we expected a bit avangarde interpretation, and were a bit uncertain..., but the opera was great, following to details the classical interpretations, with a healthy dose of humour Amadeus would certainly appreciate. Many moments of brilliance, and the performance of Leporello was spectacular - the voice, and the acting..., as well as a few ladies. A few voices a bit soft, but able to carry the music and put on a nice melodic performance. Overall, the acting was superb, and Don Giovanni himself - a very pleasing and convincing, a treat to look at. Some pre-performance marketing material did a bit of disservice, since they showed people in sun glasses, in turtle necks, with modern haircuts - let me assure you there was none of that nonsense at the opera. Needless to say, the Elgin theatre is spectacular...

    Don Giovani

    by hamster22 on 2011-10-31Elgin Theatre - Toronto

A weak Don, at the core of the opera, weakened the impact.

    Spectacular!

by spectacularplay on 2011-05-02Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Hard to even start. Everything was spectacular, the play itself, the acting, singing and the ballet. The orchestral music was unbelievable, big applause to the conductor. La clemenza di Tito is a beautiful story, and if one ever needs to revive one's spirit, this is the play to go to. The only downside was not the play itself, but the crowd. If in Toronto, going to such a beautiful theater as the Elgin theater, there should be no reason for one to dress in SLACKS OR JEANS!!! An evening of elegance is ruined by absolute disregard to the beauty of art and culture. A dress code needs to be issued. Also, the crowd should be informed of WHEN to start clapping. It was distracting (and I am sure not just for those who knew when to clap but especially FOR THE ACTORS) for the crowd to start clapping in the middle of the play. The song may have ended, but NOT THE SCENE. Something should be done about that as well.

    Stars were aligned for Clemenza

by SueCanoe on 2011-05-02Elgin Theatre - Toronto

A team of stellar voices worked together to provide a treat for the ears. The acting skills of the principals drew in the audience for this 'difficult', serious opera. A fabulous production with lavish sets

    Tremendous play

It was just AMAZING! Superprofessional level of all singers. My 10-years old daughter was fascinated with the play as well. Thank you so much!

La Clemenza di Tito was wonderful

by KingstonOperaFan on 2011-04-28Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I traveled from Kingston just to see the Opera Atelier production, and was not disappointed. Sitting in the second row, I could see the performers sweat, and felt they were singing just to me. The intimate surroundings at the Elgin are wonderful. The opera singers were terrific, and the dance was dazzling. Tafelmusik, as always was impeccable in its performance. I especially liked Spicer, Lebel, and Maniaci, and of course loved Brueggergosman. Thank you.

    Opera Atelier triumphs with Tito

by Aande on 2011-04-25Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Wonderful blend of voices from all the principal singers. Great ballet dancing. Sensitive orchestration from Tafelmusik under David Fallis. Simple but elegant scenery, with effective use of special effects even though it is done to a budget. Lovely costumes even though it wasn't historically correct.

    Great Show

    by Nick99 on 2011-04-25Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Strong and unusual voices, fine period playing from Tafelmusic, careful staging, interesting if modest dance interjections, a real treat! Can we have more genuine efforts like this please?
