Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and enters the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times in their 55 seasons.

    Sid the Kid is back!

by gal33 on 2011-11-28CONSOL Energy Center - Pittsburgh

A record setting crowd of over 18,600 fans watched Sid the Kid earn 3 assists on 4 goals within 10 minutes of the first . The Pens skated to a 6-3 final against the Ottawa senators. Fans from Toronto were even heard booing Daniel Alfredson every time he touched the puck. The arena was beautiful and the arena attendents very courtious.

    Fantastic Atmosphere

by jingles6 on 2011-11-14CONSOL Energy Center - Pittsburgh

From the time I entered Consol, for my first visit, I knew this would be different. A new arena, state of the art every thing. Two fine Usherettes who helped me out greatly, finding my seat and making me feel at home- Eileen & Roberta. Great sound system, good sight lines, great Nacho's and ice cold pop. I have never seen ice so WHITE, as what I seen here. The game was exciting and fast paced. The boards thumped which each hit. The puck could be heard hitting the sticks every where. The Pens won,and the crowd kept on them to win and never quit. The penalty shot brought every one to their feet in heart pounding fashion.

by CanadianPensfan on 2011-10-21CONSOL Energy Center - Pittsburgh

Amazing experience for my entire family. We got close enough to the ice that my youngest was given a game puck from the ref! The experience was one we will NEVER forget!

    The Consol rocks!!!

by dougaitken74 on 2011-10-17CONSOL Energy Center - Pittsburgh

By far the best hockey arena I've ever been to, the Consol Energy Center is built in a spacious design....and without a bad seat in the house. If you have ever been to the old Igloo, you will well appreciate the attention to detail that was put into making the Consol a state of the art arena and a totally pleasurable experience.

    HABS domination

by hamiltonhabfan on 2011-03-14CONSOL Energy Center - Pittsburgh

The CONSOL energy centre is an amazing place to watch a game. I've been in alot of the newer open concept arenas over the past 3-5 years and very few compare. This was my first visit to the CONSOL Energy Centre and i was immediately impressed with the amazing sight lines even from the corner. Congrat's to Mario and his team. The crowd in Pitsburgh is electric making it one of the best places to watch a game. I've been attending every year fo 15 years and plan to return again next year. The result of the game was as good as it gets for a diehard HABS fan 3-0!

    Penguins win!

by tbready on 2010-11-15CONSOL Energy Center - Pittsburgh

Drove down from Toronto to see a real team play hockey and was not disappointed. Great experience, great arena and they do not gouge you at the concession stand like the ACC in Toronto. Would like to go again.

    The Pens were deadly!

    by norton352 on 2010-05-16Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

I am so happy that i got to see the Penguins play, and win for the last time,at Mellon arena. That was something i will never forget! The only thing that would have been better,is if they would have beat the Canadiens,in the 7th game.

    Missed 90% of game

by BeckyWallace on 2010-04-06Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

I only have this a 1 star rating b/c I missed my flight leaving Toronto b/c of US Immigration. This was a dream trip for me to see Pittsburgh play. Crosby is from my home province of Nova Scotia and me and my cousin saved up and travelled all that way to see him play and since we missed the flight due to a hold up in immigration we only saw the shootout. I am sure it would have been a 5 star experience. I am very disppointed and hope to go to a game again soon.

Great experience at the Mellon Arena. Pens put on a great show and winning in overtime was an added bonus. Great facility. Looking forward to next year in the Consul Energy Centre.

    The Igloo needs to go!!

by ellebieber on 2010-03-30Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

Considering I purchased the 'best' 8 seats available for this game back in late 2009 I was very surprised how poor the seats were, I had to bend over sideways to see the far end of the rink and had zero view of the scoreboard! The new arena for next season can't come soon enough.

Great game. Well worth the trip, and still cheaper than seeing the Leafs at home at the ACC.

To watch the defending Stanley Cup champions at their home arena was a real treat. We were entertained with a great game against the Detroit Red Wings who they beat to win the Stanley Cup. Another bonus was to see the game at the Mellon Arena as it is the last year they will be playing at that venue.
