Pittsburgh Penguins History
The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).
Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.
In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and enters the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.
The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times in their 55 seasons.

Awesome. Great arena and an awesome event. Would go again!
It was truly such an amazing experience and the atmoposhere was great
My daughter and I travelled from Toronto to see this game. the entire experience was incredible. Love Pittsburgh, love the Consol Energy Centre. So happy the Pens won the game!
I got to see my favourite team dominate the Sabres!!
This was my 8 year old son's Christmas wish - to see Crosby, Fleury and the Penguins play on home ice. The Consol Energy Centre is amazing! They keep the fans busy and interactive, and the seating is awesome!
It was my first visit to the Consol Energy Centre. Would definitely like to go back
They are like two different teams. One with Sidney on the ice that dominates the play and has many scoring chances, and then the rest of the lines just try and hold on. Makes for a very interesting game. Venue is new, clean, and has a good layout with a good view of the playing surface from most of the seats. We had front row of the second deck and I would recommend these to anyone who wants to see all the action.
The CONSOL Centre is awesome. The seats we had were awesome. The game was awesome. The lady and her husband sitting in Section 112 Row E Seats 1 and 2 told my 12 year old to go F herself because she was cheering for the Leafs. Her husband then accused my 14 year old of stealing his beer. Most of the other Pittsburgians were fun. Overall a great outing.
Go PENS Go! A combination of skill, speed, and adrenaline. That's my black and yellow team!
For our anniversary I decided to treat my guy to his first NHL game for his fave team Penguins. We sat right behind the penalty box and he was awe struck to say the least.
As expected, the Penguins did not disappoint. We traveled 7 hours to see them and would highly recommend going to see them. Definitely a dream come true!
Traveled from north of the border to a great hotel. Next the arena. Staff was great, people were great, facility was great. Game was great. I would recommend anybody go see a game at the Consol . Even if you are not a Penguin fan.
Awesome new arena - went down to the unveiling of the Mario statue and watched the game as well!
Had tickets in "the" Captains section just below Marios box. EXCELLENT!!
Unbelievable experience! Better than ANY other arena!
The Pens played amazing and the arena was great!! Can't wait to go again!!
Great game! Seats were about 12 rows directly behind Pens net...THe crowd was intense...Would highly recommend!
We traveled from London, ON to see the game on Jan 31 as we are big Pittsburgh fans. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed! The Penguins came back from a 3 goal deficit in the 3rd period to tie it up with only 6.6 seconds left! Yay Malkin!! What ensued was a very fast and furious overtime period followed by a shootout. Again, Malkin saved the day by being the only one to score during the shootout. Fleury once again proved that he is an excellent goalie by stopping all 3 shots! This is the second time we have traveled to Pittsburgh to see them play the Leafs and both times we definitely got our money's worth!
This was our first time going to Pittsburgh to see the Penguins. Great game, Penguins won in the shoot out. Easy drive from Toronto. We stayed at the Cambria Suites right next door to the Consol Energy Centre and it was perfect. We will do it again.
The consol energy centre is one of the best venues to experience a hockey game. The concourse is wide and they let you in well before game time to look around and explore. although I will always miss the Igloo, i will travel many miles again to see the Penguins in Consol.
