  • Rickie Lee: What a talent, & man is she out there!

by piscescouple1 on 2015-07-17The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

It was obvious to see what a talent Rickie Lee Jones is and was many years ago when she was first discovered at such a young age. I saw her over 10 years ago during the Bush era in upstate New York, and she mostly played numbers from her current album at that time, which had a very anti-American theme. I was thrilled during the first few pieces of this week's concert because she went back to her roots and covered many beloved favourites from her first album. The big letdown of the night was how out there she was, unsure of what key a song was in, or what chord to play on her guitar. I was also extremely saddened by how she treated her fellow musicians and the poor roadie responsible for setting her up with guitar after guitar - all of it seeming very unorganized on her part. She was so entitled and, let's face it, a bit of a disaster. But, I guess we need to really just be there for the music, right?

An amazing voice. Great show. Informal venue. Loved it.

  • Rickie Lee Jones, a delightful night

by tthorntonTO on 2015-07-16The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

While you could tell it was early in the tour (Toronto was the 2nd stop), the show was a treat for the audience. There was a lot of play between the band and Rickie Lee, "Hey maybe you should use the electric instead of the acoustic on this one." It felt like we were in an intimate session with the group. I was pleasantly surprised with the range of Rickie Lee's voice. She hasn't lost it with age! Her old songs that I remember hearing for the first time in 1979 sounded as fresh as ever. And I was mesmerized by the new work too.

Only a 90 minute set but it was full of classic Rickie Lee Jones songs.. mostly culled from her first 2 albums. Great show!! Always glad when RLJ comes to Toronto. Plus, The Danforth Music Hall was a great venue for her show.. MUCH better than her last show at the Phoenix. Thank you Rickie!!!

  • Rickie Lee Jones was masterful and wonderful

Rickie showed us again why she is unique and fabulous. From her rendition of Sympathy for the Devil to the simple Chuckie's in Love, she demonstrated a range of vocals that were not just singing, but her voice as an instrument. She is just amazing.

  • Rickie Lee didn't disappoint.

    by OMC1 on 2010-02-23Fitzgerald Theater - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Rickie Lee brought her trio to Minneapolis and put on a laid back but satisfying show. While she seemed a bit tired, a fact she alluded two or three times, she mustered the strength to lay down some great sounds especially on three new tunes from her excellent new CD, Balm in Gilead: "Wild Girl", a touching, poetic song about her daughter, the beautiful, religious "His Jewelled Floor" and the heartfelt love song,"Bonfires". The minimalist arrangements with Rickie Lee's guitar or piano and the backing on bass, snare drum with occasional organ brought out the simple beauty of these tunes. While she did perform some of the old favorites like "Chuck E's in Love" , it was the new tunes that revealed Rickie's enduring talent and wonderful sense of melody and lyric. Please keep it up, Rickie!
