RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:

Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Rodriguez is amazing! His voice, guitar playing, and song writing are superb. So much respect for this artist."

"Rodriguez was better than expected, and I expected a lot! He played some amazing guitar, sang his heartbreaking poetic lyrics, and surprised us all with some incredibly well-timed corny jokes."

"Rodriguez has perfect pitch!! His music was enjoyable, loved how he mixed it up playing other artists too!! Fun show."

    So glad I saw this!

by chickitanana on 2017-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

It took a long time for Rodriguez to finally get on the stage but the wait was worth it. His sight is greatly impaired and he has difficulty walking and needed assistance to his stool. Once he started playing it was wonderful. The crowd was extremely enthusiastic and kept shouting requests and accolades. He stopped playing at one point to engage in a delightful conversation with a fan. He spoke about his message of love and power to the people (with an open hand not a clenched fist). His voice was clear and strong as he sang the powerful lyrics of his songs. A pleasure to see his long lanky fingers strumming those strings with impeccable rhythm. Not to forget his sense of humor and style, starting with the toque ( being in Canada ?) a straw hat with a band to match his shirt, a sexy gaucho hat, of course his usual wellington boots and ending with iridescent goggles that he pulled off with style. The band was a great accompaniment for him. I wasn't expecting an encore but was happy there was one. So many standing ovations throughout the show.

    Fantastic Rodriguez!

by EvanCameronMusic on 2017-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

As always, Rodriguez did not fail to impress! He was in good spirits as always and he and the band sounded great! The opener was really good as well! However the crowd at Massey Hall was awful!

The show is good and the timing is good as well. The seating is tight. Didn't mind the veneer but if you have two bigger neighbors on both sides it's not easy to enjoy a two hour performance

    Love Sugarman

by Saugan on 2017-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

Ever since I watched Searching for Sugarman I have wanted to see him in person. Despite his age, 75 years old, frail, he is so charming a d has a positive message. Loved the concert.

    Outrageously great!

    by drove2far on 2017-08-08Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

To see Rodriguez was like filling up my bucket list to the brim. I love his music, his soothing voice, his easy style, his quick smile. His story. His person. The audience went crazy. He gave many encores and everyone danced, sang, stomped clapped and even asked him to run for President. Bravo Sixto. I will see you again, hopefully.

    One of a Kind!

by Carolinski on 2017-08-08Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Loved the concert. He seems like such a genuine guy. He's mostly into just sitting and playing, not a lot of theatrics, and I loved that about this concert. Just him and 3 backup musicians - plain and simple. But the comedian he is certainly comes out even with only a small amount of interaction with the audience. Highly recommend this concert.

Rodriquez is truly an unknown legend

by OriginalLucy on 2017-08-08Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

From the time he was helped onto the stage to the end of his performance, I felt I was witnessing an event that will stay with me forever. A truly humble and witty man with a bigger than life message. Fortunate to have shared an evening with him

    Rodriguez was unforgettable!

by Westcoasters on 2017-08-08Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Rodriguez and his band were fabulous. The balance on the backup band was excellent so that Rodriguez was clearly audible. The songs were well done and the audience was very receptive. Someone kept calling out "you are a legend" and we felt like we were in the presence of a very special artist. The last encore song, a remake of the Sinatra song "I want to live before I die," was very haunting and beautiful.

    Hats off to Rodriguez!!

by maire3 on 2017-08-06Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I've waited a long time to be entertained by Rodriguez in concert and loved every moment that he was on stage! I just wished he would have played a little longer than just over an hour. The opening act was good but could have been shorter. I was there to see and to listen to Rodriguez. Love his music. I was happy to see that he had musical accompaniment too!

    A Legend....

by CowboyTroy on 2017-08-06Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

What incredible songs.....if you've seen the movie "Searching for Sugar Man", you won't want to miss this. He is an artist in the truest sense.....so grateful to be playing, but seemingly unaffected by his new found fame. On stage, he's simply Rodriguez....singer/songwriter. You kinda feel like you got a ticket to watch him and some talented buddies play his songs in his living room......no show boating....few lights, simple, but incredible....like his songs.

So Happy We Got to See Him

Great concert. He still has an amazing voice and his band is great. He seems very shy as he didn't interact with the crowd very much.

    Disappointed

by namelass on 2017-05-24Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

I saw Rodriguiz last year at the Centennial Concert Hall and was deeply disappointed. I have worn out his 2 CDs and his show was not a reflection of the music I listen to at home. If he played with even a small backup band, I would pay top dollar to see him again. Even better with an orchestra. But unplugged, and doing covers of songs I never liked first time around, I would not see him again.

Thank you for a memorable performance. Your voice expresses so much hope and peace in a world that badly needs these two ingredients.

    Great Show!

by EvanCameronMusic on 2016-09-17Massey Hall - Toronto

The show was very good! He had a young girl opening for him and she was pretty good! Rodriguez was helped out onto the stage as he is mostly blind. The show started a bit rough with a cover of "Your Song" by Elton John, but after that it was amazing! He sounded great. He didn't have a band, but that was fine! I wish he did more of his own tunes though. He did the hits though. He did I Wonder, Sugar Man, I Think of You, The Establishment Blues, Inner City Blues, Crucify your Mind and more! He also covered Light my Fire, Satisfaction, Blue Suede Shoes, Somebody to Love as well as some other covers. I knew all the songs though. He wasn't as political as I heard he was. Only 1-2 political remarks. After every song he turned down his guitar and started the next song with the guitar turned down, then turned it back up. Other than that, a phenomenal show! Would definitely see him again!
