This was my first time to a Ron James show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ron puts on a great one-man show. With no props aside from the remarkably diverse range of faces he can make and the motions he can extract from his body, James keeps the chuckles, guffaws, and belly-laughs rolling through nearly 2 hours of non-stop fast-paced high energy comedy. He touches on everything from Tim Horton's to Stephen Harper to mid-life ailments and crises. And everything is done with his characteristically high-powered vocabulary, alliteration ('gentle, German(!), Jesus'), and cultural references. Although it is fun and an entertaining mental workout to try to keep up with all of his cultural allusions (e.g., Hieronymous Bosch) as they leap, spring-loaded from his mind in a seeming stream-of-consciousness rant, you don't have to have a degree in world history to get the jokes. The only minor drawback is that sometimes the mental conveyor belt that feeds Ron all of this high-speed verbiage has a hiccup and leaves him blank for a moment or two. Not to worry, though, Ron is such an accomplished performer that he can easily cover and recover. It does, however, make me think that changing up the pace here and there with a slower, simpler bit or two would allow the audience (and Ron) to catch its breath and make for a more varied and satisfying overall show. On the whole though it is an amazing performance!!
