Slick, but lacking charm (and organization)
by innocentmurmur on 2010-06-28McMahon Stadium - CalgaryI remember Lilith Fair as being more "organic" - everyone lounging on blankets or dancing freely by the stage as acts took turns playing. Yesterday's event was more polished and slick - it lost some of that original charm. That being said, the music was excellent, and I certainly enjoyed listening. I just felt more like an observer this time... There were also some organizational issues. No info was available online (or on arrival) as to scheduling. People sitting in the stands at 2:30 were surprised as word got around that the mainstage acts didn't start until 5:30. There were two minor stages outside the stadium, but they weren't marked as to which stage was which or who was playing on them. Unless the performer said her name, we had no idea! (There was a small lighted sign at one end of the stadium running through the acts and where they were playing. The times were wrong, though. My particular favourite gaff was that the sign advertised "Grave Porter and the Nocturnals" as opposed to Grace Potter...) It also would have been nice to have had the large video screens beside the stage to give the people way back in the stands a better idea of what was happening. The tickets were not cheap by any stretch, and it was surprising that they weren't there. We spent at least 3 hours waiting in line - to get in, to buy a drink, to buy food, to use the bathroom. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen at football games... My only other complaint was poor timing. It was very sad to have Sarch McLachlan's performance cut short - they had to have known that there's a curfew at McMahon Stadium! However, all that aside, I really did have a great day. I hope they'll work out some of the glitches (and lower the price) and try it again next year...
