  • Shen Yun beautiful show

by DVD on 2020-01-01National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The colours, music and dancing were amazing. The dancers and narrators made the stories come alive. The National Art Centre was the perfect venue for this show.

I absolutely loved the show. The ticket was a Christmas present from my roommate. The dancing was just fabulous. The costumes were so beautiful. A wonderful show. I could have watched it for another 2 hours.

  • Mesmerizing, beautiful, colourful.

Everything was great. The stories, the dancing, the acrobatics, the gorgeous video backdrops, the production, all good. A bit too much politics in a couple of places, though.

  • Ok, but will not see it again.

by Manon on 2019-12-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

I can appreciate all the hard work that goes into this show. The decor and the costumes were extraordinary; however, I found the dance pieces to be very repetitious. It would have been nice to highlight some of the dancers doing something different than all the other dancers. They were all very good dancers, but none stood out individually. The two hosts were very elegant and spoke beautifully all three languages, but it was too much to have them come out between every dance. In general, I am happy I went, but would not recommend or attend again in the future. The price is way too expensive. I attended with three other people and they felt the same way. Sorry!

  • Very good. Colourful and exciting.

Certainly not the best performance I have ever seen.

  • Most performances impressive

by MM on 2019-12-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Although we very much enjoyed the colourful clean performances and the talented dancers, our seats (Orchestra level) were at the end of a row, which made us miss some of the performances and special effects happening at that end on stage. Those seats should be offered at much lower cost, or there should be a note about what to expect at time of purchase. This made our experience somewhat frustrating and disappointing. We didn’t enjoy the opera number, Shen Yun should focus on dancing.

  • Underwhelming

by Banb on 2019-12-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Expensive "cheap" seats. Pretty colours, interesting history, well performed but overall much less spectacular than the advertising indicates. Full of political/religious statements. Can now say we've been there, done that. Once is enough.

  • Premiere

by Paul on 2019-12-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Beautiful costumes, elegant sets, interesting music. Dancing was mostly superb, with one exception. Got a little preachy at the end.

  • Sadly the show fell flat for me.

by Liz on 2019-12-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

The overly cheap religious theme left me feeling it was inappropriate and childish. The show was cute but full of awkward and strange moments. The religious messaging could have been more subtle. I was glad my children were not there. I was tempted to leave. The dancing/choreography was good but repetitive yet the announcers kept saying over and over that the dancing and acrobatics were the best in the world. I’d beg to differ. It was cute but I was not blown away. I believe the show should speak for itself not be overly promoted as “the best”. There were far too many awkward moments and while it was cute it wasn’t exceptional. Sadly I do not recommend this show.

  • Charmed!

by Baimogui on 2019-12-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazingly choreographed and performed with fabulous costumes that were divinely eye-catching. Learning the folk stories of an amazing culture while understanding their current struggles was a lot to take in, yet it was flawlessly delivered. Certain details may have caused controversy amongst the viewers but I personally went to see art and it was a pleasure to watch. I respect all their hard work, thank them for their wonderful show, and wish they will be happy as they hope to be.

  • Good but not great

by Artsforsoul on 2018-01-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

After reading a few reviews I had high expectations for the show. I was expecting a very spectacular show and I was expecting to taking through a historical journey of China but it wasn't quite that. Just a bit of it then it turned into Fallun dafa evangelism not well disguised into Pros: Very colorful, Extremely skilled dancers, Musically great especially with live orchestra and musical scenes, The Presenters did a great Job and were very elegant, screen to scene transitions/actions. Cons: After a few scenes, the moves and choreography become quite repetitive/deja vu, only the scenarios add a touch of surprise, new. Around mid way, the show turns very much into a not so subtle fallun dafa evangelism. Not against them using this plateform for that, but it took a huge place in the show.

My wife and I did not enjoy the show that much. There is lots of dancing and dancing is not something that I enjoy to watch that much. I bought tickets based on previews you see on TV. I was under impression it was an acrobatic show but that was not the case. Our other problem is that the person sitting in front of us had emptied a bottle of perfume on her. We had to leave at second half because both of us were getting major headaches. I wished NAC would advise people that is is a scent free area and even print those on the tickets we purchase and have signs in the lobby. THey should have a no scent policy and if anyone has sprayed perfume should be expelled.

  • Shen Yun was excellent!

One of the things I love about this style of Asian dance is all the gymnastics that is incorporated into the dance routines---would have loved to see more!

  • by Anonymous on 2018-01-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Was not what I was expecting at all. Struck me like a school presentation, with some rather juvenile content. The cost is not at all in line with what it is. I will acknowledge that the performers have skill with their dance, it just was not very inspiring on the whole. Choreography was boring and repetitive - often couldn't wait for piece to end. Since Spirituality is the underpinning I expected to be more inspired! At one point it felt like an infomercial about their beliefs - not ok. It felt very heavy-handed. Hard to put in words, left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Would recommend taking a giant pass.

  • Shen Yun was stunning!

We had a wonderful view of an array of dancers, who had beautiful costumes and a lot of talent in their art. We loved seeing this performance!
