    Shen Yun was incrediable

by HenocLighter on 2014-12-30Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

The performance was amazing. The live Orchestra was an added bonus. The performers really bring the stories that they tell to life.

    Shen Yun

Very colourful, good synchronized dancing and gymnastics but somewhat repetitive. Music was interesting and enjoyable. We did not appreciate the political verbal comments.

It's been a very long time since I've been to a theatre show and Shen Yun has definitely gone beyond my standards for a great and unforgettable experience.

    Sadly disappointed

by Anonymous on 2014-01-30Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I bought tickets for my daughter and I for our birthdays. We were very excited about seeing this event as it looked like it would be incredibly beautiful from the videos we had seen. While the costumes and the dance portions were very beautiful, we found the whole production to be very choppy. We did not like the MC's coming out after each dance talking about the next scene, the curtain going up and down ruined the flow of the show we felt. It would have been better if each dance had flowed into the next giving a story of the culture. As I mentioned above, the costumes were very beautiful and the dancers themselves were incredible, however, each dance was very short lived so you don't get enough time to appreciate their skill. We will not attend another event of Shen Yun unfortunately.

Dance and music was great but...

The dancers and musicians were astounding. However the two acts with political and religious material spoiled this wonderful show.

    Shen Yun was forgettable

by Diesel2 on 2014-01-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I was expecting more athletic performances. Instead it was mostly dance, and the dances were repetitive. The female dancers were always waving something around and each dance looked similar. Same with the men. There was not much difference from dance to dance. There was a lot of self-congratulatory hype about the performances including a glossy handout with notes from the PM. This effort should have gone into more variety in each dance. The background scenery was excellent and innovative. The costuming was great.

    Beautiful show but...

by DarkF12 on 2014-01-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

My girlfriend and I have been wanting to go to shen yun for about two years now and we finally had a chance to do so on Jan 26,2014. I am not an expert on dance or song or any kind of performing arts, specially chinese, but we felt that the dances were very similar to each other. Also it was a very beautiful, informative show about the history a d folklore of china. Having said that, we were fighting the urge to fall asleep for the last 45 minutes of the performance. Theres a giant tv screen in the background that helps along with tbe story of every dance and to me this made the whole show look cheap and unproffessional. There was a scene with a giant dragon on the tv screen which looked great but i honestly dont go to a show like this to see an animated cartoon, i think they could have used a real prop dragon for scenes such as this and many other grwat props for other dances. Sadly i would not recommend.

    Shen Yun too political

by Lulu10 on 2014-01-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I liked the dancing and music but the show was too political. I understand the plight of the Falun Dafa BUT I should not have to pay to hear and see this propaganda. It should be an entertaining show not a show telling and showing us a particular political stance. Very, very disappointing.

Good, but a bit political, re: Falun Gong

by ChewbaccasGhost on 2014-01-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The dancing and music in this performance are fantastic. The "Mongolian Chopsticks" was a favorite of mine. Also, the performances introduce some of the Chinese fables, which I also enjoyed. However, it seems clear the performance was created largely to promote Falun Gong, a religious practice that is banned by the Chinese government. This wasn't a huge issue for me, but it would have been nice to know going in. For instance, there were a few performances that depicted the treatment of Falun Gong practioners in China by their government that got a little disturbing, though no doubt they were quite tame versus the reality of that treatment in China. Again, those performances could easily have been made much darker, and were beautiful in their own right, I just would have like to have known about the political/religious message of the show going in. Overall, while I personally don't care for political or religious messages embedded in my entertainment, the bulk of the show is polictically neutral, and is about celebrating 5000 of Chinese culture. The costumes are fantastic, the dancers are well choreographed and talented, the hosts are very professional (and occasionally funny), and the mix of classical eurpoean and chinese instruments in the orchestra sounds fantastic. So, yes, absolutely check this performance out, but be prepare to be exposed to Falun Gong and the political message that follows.

    Advertising better than overall show.

by Kishka on 2014-01-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Visual effects---GREAT: Costumes and costume changes--GREAT: Timing-GREAT:Instrument soloist-GREAT: BUT...All dances were so similar, that after watching one, I was expecting different and more exciting. The dancers' skills could be highlighted more..Take the audience into a rehearsal session for instance.

Shen Yun - Great dancing with political overtones

by Misled on 2014-01-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Enjoyed the performance of dance but left feeling somewhat used. Show is religious based and exposes the audience to a political message that was not expected nor advertised.

    Wonderful!

by MelinaCo on 2014-01-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Shen Yun produced once again a masterpiece of ancient Chinese dance this year. The dance, costumes, colours and tales were absolutely wonderful! Will definitely come back next year!

    Traditional Chinese Dancing: Nice Costumes-boring

by Seven7777 on 2014-01-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The show is all traditional Chinese dancing and although the dancers were great, costumes and set was good, it got very old quickly. The show was re-telling of Chinese stories from 5000 years ago until today through dance and music. It was like going to see a dance recital but all in Chinese. We could have left at the intermission and not missed anything worth noting. There were a few dances/stories that was political and anti-Chinese government and I can understand this but I was not interested in going to see a political protest at a downtown show.
