A bit more dance, a little less propaganda please

by Nya on 2020-03-12Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The claim that Shen Yun recreates traditional Chinese culture is misleading since it promotes Falun Gong, a sect created in 1992, which has some extremely problematic views. The dancing and the costumes were nice, but the anti-communist sketches looked pathetic and the religious undertones were annoying. Overall, I would not recommend the show: there must be better ways to learn about Chinese art and culture.

We left at intermission. It was a waste of time and money

by DRA~Calgary on 2020-03-12Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

political and religious overtones outweighed choppy performances. I wonder who made the decision to permit this to come into Canadian theatres. Wonder if it was previewed at all?

    Shen Yun

by M. P. on 2020-03-12Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The colors of the costumes were amazing, but we did not like the fact that we had to sit through religious and political views rammed down our throats!

    Awesome Performance

by L.eila on 2020-03-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Shen Yun was a total masterpiece of a performance. We enjoyed every minute of the experience. The costumes and their colours, the precision of movements, the story itself were awe inspiring.

    Shen Yun

by J. on 2020-03-11Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Dance, costumes, commitment to excellence and music were amazing and I would come back again EXCEPT FOR ONE THING--the proselytization for Falun Dufa was bordering on propaganda. I am a fierce lobbyist for freedom of worship but I am just as fiercely against proselytization by any religious group. Let the beauty and commitment to Shen Yun speak for itself and leave the revelations about communist persecution and bans to the news world and more accurately, to the irrefutable videos on the internet showing communist persecutions of many religious groups, The world is watching and the voices against these atrocities are loud and strong (as they should be!). Let the beauty of the dances speak to virtue and faith and leave it at that.

    FANTASTIC AND INCREDIBLE

    by P. M. on 2020-03-11

Wow wow and wow. Show was terrific. Music was stunning and the costumes were unbelievable. Each and every single performance was different and told a full story. Cannot wait to see them again in 2021.

    bright colors keep your attention

by BroBeans on 2020-03-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The bright colors and nice dancing keep your attention, almost distracting you from the heavy-handed anti-evolution, anti-atheism, anti-communism undertones rampant throughout the presentation. I'm glad they toned down the heavily anti-gay anti-technology which are core values that the "religion" follow and also used to throw into the mix in this presentation.

    Underwhelmed

by Dance Follower on 2020-03-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Enjoyed the exquisite costumes, sets and colours and most of the dance pieces. Found the overall presentation choppy, like going to an art gallery to see beautiful exhibits with an educator/tour guide. Pieces were very short with intermittent commentary almost as long as some of the performances. Resented the use of the choreography to make a political statement. Paid big bucks to be entertained. Not interested in political issues.

    Beautiful production

by L. N. on 2020-03-11Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The visual effects and dancing were beautiful. However many people arrive late and distracted from the storytelling of each dance

    Shen Yun

by SA on 2020-03-10Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I guess with all the hype behind the show we were expecting a lot from it. We were a little underwhelmed. It was alright, but we won’t go again.

    Amazing Demonstration of Chinese Culture

by Aunty on 2020-03-10Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Beautiful costumes, lovely singing, expertly choreographed dancing, all in our own country--didn't hve to travel to see a beautiful display of an ancient art form.

    Wanted more

by Cristina on 2020-03-10Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I was expecting more dancing and cultural references. It felt more like a political and religious platform. Some of the dances were nice and had wow factor, but overall I was hoping for more.

    Unaware

by Sad at show on 2020-03-10Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I was unaware that this event was a platform for a political statement. I felt uncomfortable for the majority of the show. The dance was beautiful and amazing. If the organizers of this show as well as the promoters want to forward a religious message, this should be communicated to tickets buyers.

    Breathtaking

by IslandGirlYeg on 2020-03-09Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Extremely talented individuals wearing beautiful costumes made for a breathtaking performance. We really enjoyed how the whole thing was out together, each scene narrated at beginning by hosts in English and in Mandarin (I assume) to give a good understanding of each performance. A good history lesson, I’m fact. Parkade made for easy inexpensive parking. If you use the parkade don’t rush out at end as it took at least 20 minutes to get down from 3rd floor to gate. We sat in balcony which was a great view but I don’t think there would be a bad view from any seat.

    Disappointment

by Mar on 2020-03-09Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Definitely did not live up to its hype! Was very disappointed in it. Both the male and female performers seemed to do much the same thing each time with different costumes. The skits were kind of hokey. People down the row from us left at intermission and did not return. Overall was not worth the admission price,
