  • Waited too Long

    by 7171 on 2009-08-19Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 1 out of 5

Silversun Pickups... that's who we went to see but instead we waited 4 hours while being tortured with over indulgent noise. 4 hours! It was really too bad... Silversun Pickups really shot themselves in the foot having 2 opening acts... by the time Manchester Orchestra came out, the crowd was done. Many people left half way through SP's set feeling kind of bad for leaving when they finally get the hear the band they came to hear.

  • Manchester Orchestra

Andy Hull is amazing. He has great stage presence a voice you would never expect to come from a man of his size.

  • Manchester Orchestra=Great

The concert was awesome, but my only complaint (and it's the usual one) is that it was all ages. The beer gardens was outside the venue, so it was impossible to see and difficult to hear the performers. I suppose the obvious solution is for me to not be an alcoholic. that's just not going to happen though.

  • Mindblowing entertainment

    by Wesley87 on 2009-08-17MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Cage the Elephant opened the night with a bang, from their seemingly drug induced bobbing and mannerisms to the lead vocalist voice to the crowd surfing while singing, right through to the lead singer diving from the towers of speakers lining the side of the stage. There was nothing dull about this performance and I'm certain that some time soon I'll be buying a ticket to see Cage the Elephant on a headlining tour. Manchester Orchestra stole my heart. I was a little taken back by the appearance of the band, particularly the lead singer, but image meant absolutely nothing about hearing 30 seconds of the vocals coming from the lumberjack-like leads mouth. His voice has a very unique waling sort of sound to it, and as unappealing as you may imagine that would be, it's the complete opposite. The range demonstrated was remarkable! For those that enjoy a visual performance or a band with a lot of stage presence and the rock star attitude, Manchester Orchestra may have seemed a little dull, but if you enjoy talent and are out to witness some first hand, you would have a hard time finding more. Silversun Pickups were every bit as great as they were the first time I saw them, perhaps even better. Every track was performed nearly flawlessly and the addition of the female bassist singing more than backup was a nice touch. There's something nice about a band that is relatively successful being humbled by the size of a crowd they are able to pull together the first time they headline a tour in a new place. Overall, I find it next to impossible to imagine a night filled with more raw and rather unique talent. This was one of the best concerts I've ever attended, and I have attended hundreds.

  • Silversun Pickups solid show!

From the opener throughout the show just kept getting better. Manchester Orchestra started to pump things up but silversun was amazing,

  • What a line-up!

by JPZee on 2009-08-17Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Wow! Not being that familiar with the opening bands, I was very impressed with their sets. The Silversun Pickups rocked (as expected). I loved hearing "Panic Switch" live.

  • Silversun Was Nice

by SeldomBlaze on 2009-08-17MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Missed most of the Cage show. Man Orchestra was very good and got crowd involved. I don't care for the venue as acoustics are not great and you can't booze while watching the show. Drummer for Silversun was great to watch as well as the bassist. All in all worth attending.

  • SSPU/Manchester Orchestra/Cage the Elephant

Very good show. Silversun was pretty good but Manchester Orchestra was really good, I would recommend seeing them both.

  • Bands opener Cage the Elephant amazing!

    by Concert00Goer on 2009-08-16Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Silversun pickups were a low light for me. Cage the Elephant was who I went for and they were amazing. Manchester Orchestra was also great. Venue was nice, Minors separated from open lounge style floor.

  • Silversun Pickups...A good time.

by thefez on 2009-08-16MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Silversun puts on a good show. Played a nice long set, lots of energy. I'd see them again. Not the biggest fan of Cage the Elephant, but Manchester Orchestra is worth the price of admission alone. Super good show.

  • Manchester Orchestra made this show

cage the elephant... not impressive. Manchester Orchestra was amazing! SSPu closed out the show with a high note.

  • SSPU were AMAZING

by Slaney on 2009-08-16Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, good sound, totally killer set list. They played everything you would want to hear from their two cd's opening with Growing Old Is Getting Old and finishing with a long version of Lazy Eye. I see a lot of live shows and this one is in my top 5 of the year, not a great venue but all heart in the effort, it was plainly obvious that the band was having a good time.

  • loved SSPU

by cinesmith on 2009-08-16MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

mac hall acoustics had some ultra-kickin drums, but somewhat muted vocals. the post-shoe-gazing band was interesting enough to keep my pumped throughout the concert, but ima say it was mostly the music itself that held my interest.

  • SSPU killed it!

SSPU's live performance is mind blowing! Check it!

  • Fantastic!

I thought the Silversun Pickups were great live! Some of their songs were much better live, like Panic Switch, though some were better on the album. I wish they played Melatonin though!!

  • Pleasantly Surprised

by Trollsy on 2009-08-16Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Lets start with the Venue. Edmonton Events center was never my favorite venue because of the two pillars in the middle of the floor which blocks the view, but this time it felt cozy and intimate. Cage the Elephant had good stage presence and rocked out more then I thought they would ( even if the drummer had a bum hand). The lead singer acted like an epileptic Mic Jagger. Manchester Orchestra rocked out hard and was pretty good, probably my favorite band of the night, and I went in only knowing the one song. Silversun pickups had a huge cheer, even if the roadies took about 20 min too log to set up. The pickups had a smile on the whole night. They rocked out hard, nice solos, nice beats, nice everything. It was a good length until they did the encore, which made the concert a couple songs too long.

  • Awesome show!

by CanadianBacon on 2009-08-16MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Thank you to X92.9 for bringing these guys back to Calgary - and as the main act too! These guys deserve the headliner and even more. With the way their music builds each song, I thought they'd have a hard time keeping up near the end of the show - but they were completely on the ball, each song, each note, each riff.....Glad we saw these guys at such a cool venue before they blow up and sell out the Saddledome next time - which would be disappointing to see since they put on an amazingly intimate show with the couple hundred we had at MacEwan. Both Cage the Elephant and Manchester Orchestra played great sets as well.

  • Silversun Pickups was a decent show.

by Calskin on 2009-08-16MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

So although I'm not a huge Silversun Pickups fan, I enjoy going to concerts whether I like the band or not. Anyway, the opening acts, Cage the Elephant and Manchester Orchestra were really great. Cage the Elephant, for such a small band had huge energy, and the lead singer dove into the crowd from 10 feet above their heads. Manchester Orchestra was a pretty cool act too. Not as much energy as Cage the Elephant, but they were still worth seeing. Silversun Pickups was a cool act to see. All the fans really loved the show. My favorite was watching the drummer. He get's really into the music and it's cool to see. Overall for the show, I would take it down a star because the sound wasn't great. The music was too loud, and a bit high on the treble end for that concert hall, and so it started crossing the line to being distorted to where you can't hear the music as well. Don't get me wrong, I like loud music, but not at the expense of quality.
