Mindblowing entertainment
by Wesley87 on 2009-08-17MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5Cage the Elephant opened the night with a bang, from their seemingly drug induced bobbing and mannerisms to the lead vocalist voice to the crowd surfing while singing, right through to the lead singer diving from the towers of speakers lining the side of the stage. There was nothing dull about this performance and I'm certain that some time soon I'll be buying a ticket to see Cage the Elephant on a headlining tour.
Manchester Orchestra stole my heart. I was a little taken back by the appearance of the band, particularly the lead singer, but image meant absolutely nothing about hearing 30 seconds of the vocals coming from the lumberjack-like leads mouth. His voice has a very unique waling sort of sound to it, and as unappealing as you may imagine that would be, it's the complete opposite. The range demonstrated was remarkable! For those that enjoy a visual performance or a band with a lot of stage presence and the rock star attitude, Manchester Orchestra may have seemed a little dull, but if you enjoy talent and are out to witness some first hand, you would have a hard time finding more.
Silversun Pickups were every bit as great as they were the first time I saw them, perhaps even better. Every track was performed nearly flawlessly and the addition of the female bassist singing more than backup was a nice touch. There's something nice about a band that is relatively successful being humbled by the size of a crowd they are able to pull together the first time they headline a tour in a new place.
Overall, I find it next to impossible to imagine a night filled with more raw and rather unique talent. This was one of the best concerts I've ever attended, and I have attended hundreds.
