  • Silversuns rocked, but Cage stole the show

by Tragicchad on 2009-08-16MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Silversuns were great, amazing. They played all of their best songs and had the crowd on the edge of jumping the entire set. They seem to be missing the one element to really get a crowd hopping though. The crowd seemed to be waiting for a chance to take it to a new level of intensity that is not available in their songs. The sound quality was phenominal. The singing could be heard, bass was at the right level, no instrument drown out the others. The songs sounded great. The band is really into their music and is insynch with each other. They were very tight and it shows that they have been touring together for years. Manchester Orchestra was fine. Decent sound, good songs. They really did not fit well after Cage the Elephant and before Silversuns. Their music is slower and more melodic and the crowd was really wanting an excuse to jump around. Cage the Elephant was a pleasant surprise. I knew their song Ain't no Rest for the Wicked and that was it. They played an amazing set. The singer could have taught an aerobics class while lifting weights - the guy was all over the stage and was really grooving. It shows that they are totally into their songs and the crowd loved it. They will be a show to see when they are headlining next time they come through. Hopefully they are better matched with more rocking bands.

  • SSPU w/ Manchester Orchestra & Cage the Elephant

by KayLovely on 2009-08-15Louis' Pub - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

This show was extraordinary. I have been to way too many awful shows and this one brought me back to life, made me want to care about music again and made me want to go back in time and see it again, and again and again.

  • no LAZY EYEs tonight

by OrangeB on 2009-08-15Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Kudos to the opening bands who both put on amazing performances. Cage the Elephant's front man was one of the most lively singers I have seen - sometimes sacrificing good vocals for a lot of time spent in the crowd. Manchester Orchestra put on a rockin' performance all throughout their setlist and kept it smooth - even while their front man got us singing our national anthem as he "discretely" re-tuned his guitar. All eyes and ears were drawn up towards the stage towards the four talented musicians of Silversun Pickups. The lead singer's vocals were bang on as he and his band smoothly carried one another through transitions using subtle body language or playing with distortion. It was more than I could do not to bob and jump along to their catchy beats. They played lots of their new album, including huge crowd pleasures like Panic Switch and Catch & Release. And not to worry, they threw in some old favorites like Lazy Eye and Kissing Families to really get the crowd going. A most definitely recommended show for all!!!

  • Silversun Pickups was awesome!!!

by Ruthie on 2009-08-15Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

The opening acts although not quite my taste were talented and fun. The Silversun Pickups were absolutely amazing! I haven't been to a concert in years but am so glad I went to this one. I would totally see them again! The drummer was unbeleivable! Keep rocking!

  • I paid for this?!

    by Spork108 on 2009-08-15Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 1 out of 5

The bands were great, or rather, should've been great but the entire experience was ruined thanks to the EEC. The volume was way too high for a place that size, it essentially sounded like they took the music from each instrument and the lyrics, crumpled them into a ball and just threw it blindly into the audience. A sound test shouldn't take almost 45 minutes and require 3 people to check each instrument, but if it does then you'd think the songs would sound perfect. A garbled mess of echoes and sound skipping is far from perfect. Why should I pay for this when I can get far better quality from the radio? I stayed for a few songs by the SilverSun Pickups but I wasn't enjoying any of it so I decided to leave. I say this again, I had no problem with the bands but, if given the choice, I will not be attending the EEC for an event again.

  • Silversun Pickups=win

by wickywicky on 2009-08-15Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Such an amazing concert. Waiting through Cage the Elephant was a bit painful, but Manchester Orchestra was a blast. And then Silversun Pickups just rocked it, they definitely raised the bar on the awesome meter.

  • SSPU Astounding live!!

by GTEdmonton on 2009-08-15Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

The event was all about slamming guitars with CTE and MO, vocals were hard to hear but with SSPU came out there was more to the story... Vocals were still hard to hear but the band interacted with the audience so thre was more of a connection. Panic Switch and Lazy Eye transferred amazingly to live.

  • Cage the Elephant should have Headlined!

by MuddyDog on 2009-08-15Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Over all a very good concert! I was a little disappointed with Silversun Pickups, they had a great set list, but the order in which they played it was somewhat boring and repetitive. I was really stoked up on the female bass player, and the drummer was really entertaining to watch, i can't say anything about they keys player because unfortunately there was a rather inconvenient pillar obstructing my view. The lead singer/guitarist was very good, except he played with his guitar effects after every song, which got boring fast, and also extinguished some of the crowd energy. Manchester Orchestra was awesome! There was a lot of power in their music, and you could totally feel it. I wasn't familiar with the band before hand, but now they are on my list of "Bands to Buy Discographies," so kudos. Cage the Elephant! How amazing were they?! I would have gone just to see them play their half hour set. That band has so much energy, i was really feeling it the whole time, and they kept it going through out there entire performance and got the crowd pumped! Over all a pretty good show, somewhat disappointing, but still enjoyable.

  • Silversun Pickups......

......sadly weren't overly good live, I honestly expected more.

  • The entire night was full of amazing ENERGY!!!

by Eggissis on 2009-08-15Louis' Pub - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

Wow!!!!! A must see band live!! I knew I was in for a good show the minute the Silversun Pickups set foot on stage!! The energy was wicked and the lead singer was sweating by the end of the first song!!!! The anticipation was intense due to having two opening acts!! I would see them any time, any place over and over!!!!

  • Thrice Rocked

by daddyw on 2009-08-14The Garrick Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Okay...I have seen a lot of horrible opening bands. For a while I risked being late for main events because they were so lame. However, it had been a while since I had gone to a show, and I went early. I was not disappointed. Some bands my friend and I thought of while watching 'Cage the Elephant' were the Stooges, the Pixies, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Frank Black and the Catholics. Need I say more? They put on a really entertaining show. Good riffs, catchy beats, and great energy. What? A second guest? We came up with a word to describe Manchester Orchestra's songs...EPIC. They were great. What I enjoyed most was realizing not only that they rock, but also how much they LOVE rocking, and how important it is to them to rock adequately, evident in the very much appreciated: "I want to play this song really good" to explain a brief pause for technical glitch fixing. I love watching bands who seem to really love playing together, and that dude on the second set of drums/keyboards/iMAc just sealed the deal with some mental head bopping. Two drum kits...ahhhh. And the main event. It was starting to look like Silversun Pickups would just be the 3rd good band of the night, and yet they still managed to steal the show as convincingly as the Beastie Boys stole Lollapalooza from the Smashing Pumpkins back in the day. What rock stars....seriously. From a lead singer who was obviously born to be the lead in a great band, to a kick ass unassuming bass player, to the tremendously fun to watch contortionist drummer, to the chubby guy doing mixing and weird keyboard grooves, they again seemed like 4 people who live what they do and love it. They were uber tight, I was hit repeatedly by a wall of guitar, brilliant vocals, and wicked bass lines. They were also amazing with the crowd...it is nice to have a band really love and appreciate the audience it's playing for, and they were loving Winnipeg. I would travel some serious miles to see these guys again.

  • Silversun pickups - exceeded expectations

by Chatblanc on 2009-08-14Louis' Pub - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

All I gotta say is WOW. Amazing show, would go again in a heartbeat. Loved the performance - the witty lead singer, the shy bassist, the friendly keyboardist, and of course, the amazing performance by the drummer, couldn't take my eyes off him. The band played a tight, tight set.

  • Indie rock at its finest.

by bohdannyman on 2009-08-14The Garrick Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

I saw Cage the Elephant when they came to Winnipeg last time, around 2 years ago, and when I saw that they were coming again I jumped at the opportunity. They were the first to come on stage and were businesslike right off the hop, jumping into some new material. Just like last time they showed a lot of energy on stage, and pumped up the crowd quite nicely. I hadn't heard of Manchester Orchestra before this show, and I must say they were fantastic. The addition of another percussionist gave the sometimes repetitive 'light rock' genre a new edge. Their sound was very original, and many of their songs had some really nice mellow parts, building up to some rockin' chorus. Silversun Pickups were also an unknown for me, but now I can see why they were headlining. They interacted a lot with the audience, which can sometimes be a little cheesy, but it worked quite well for them. I almost felt like I knew them personally by the end of the show. All of their material was very creative, and some of the harmonies were quite beautiful, but still maintained the rock 'n' roll factor. The crowd responded really well, and the floor was a lot of fun to be on, especially near the end. All in all it was a great show, free from any technical errors (to my knowledge). The sit or stand versatility of the Garrick is always nice, and the size of the venue seemed to fit just perfectly. I would recommend seeing any and all of these bands.

  • sspu's.

by evee on 2009-08-14The Garrick Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

This was my second time seeing the sspu's and just like last time, I was definately not dissapointed. Amazing stage presence. Good tunes, good times. Though I would have enjoyed more emphasis on the older albums, but that's just me. I wasn't a huge fan of Manchester Orchestra though, I found the singer's voice whiney and under-developed. Cage the Elephant was great. Loads of energy and very interactive. All around good night. It was quite similar to what I would imagine dancing in a sauna would be like though, super icky hot.

  • Silversun pickups were great!

by bhoff on 2009-08-14Louis' Pub - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great show, both the opening bands, cage the elephant and Manchester orchestra were very entertaining and i was surprised by them both. Silversun pickups were amazing, played a huge set that included most of there older songs as well as some new ones. An awesome small venue show that i recommend to everyone!

  • Silversun shines

by Brainman on 2009-08-14Louis' Pub - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

This is the first event at Louis that I have attended and the show was great - just don't stand too close to the bar, as the largely 20 something university crowd spends a lot of time there. I had only heard one Cage the Elephant song on the radio, which had given me the impression that they were heavily influenced by the White Stripes. What I heard was a band that had a punkier sound, and a lead singer that made me think a bit of Iggy. I was pleasantly surprised. As with Cage the Elephant, I had only heard one Manchester Orchestra song when they were a musical guest on Letterman or Conan. Solid heavy sound with solid band/audience chemistry. For me, they were the surprise of the night - I really enjoyed them. Although the sound was good for both openers, I was surprised with the clarity - especially the vocals - when the SSPUs hit the stage. The band sounded great throughout. The musicianship was solid, with (surprise) guitar being the standout.

  • Great show!

    by doublej09 on 2009-08-14Louis' Pub - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing show! The four of us are still talking about it this morning. We still can't believe that three excellent alternative bands put on such a great show for under $40. We were truly spoiled by such a group of talented artists. Thanks to Louis' for hosting!

  • Finally- a real rock show!

by Indy on 2009-08-14The Garrick Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

NOTE: before I say anything about the concert, I have to say to the owners of the Garrick Centre: get some central air conditioning in your facility!! I am not exaggerating when I say it must have been 40 C or worse in that venue. It was a hot & muggy day in Winnipeg (32 C) and inside the Garrick, it was a moist heat nightmare! I sat for the whole show and barely moved, but I was still covered head to toe in sweat when I left. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Although I usually see concerts at the MTS Centre, it was nice to get back to a more intimate setting to see one of my new favorite up and coming bands: SIlversun Pickups. They came, they saw, they shredded our faces off with blistering alt rock. This band is strong on everything: lyrics, skills, singing, and showmanship. They played a tight set of 12 songs, finishing with 'Panic Switch' and 'Lazy Eye', and did one encore set. As awesome as their music is on the radio or your ipod, the live show is a million times better. I'm sure I'll be seeing SSPU at the MTS Centre one day, as their talent can't remain under the radar for much longer. Cage the Elephant was the first opening band. They played a 4 song set, which, of course, included their radio hit "Ain't No Rest For The WIcked." The lead singer was either severely cracked out, or did a damn good job impersonating someone who was. Manchester Orchestra followed, also with a 4-song set. Their 5-piece banddid an amazing job, and I really enjoyed their music.

  • Good times with silversun pickups

Cage the elephant was pretty lame, but manchester orchestra and silversun pickups were pretty sweet.

  • Silver Pickups don't disappoint

by wpgchris on 2009-08-13The Garrick Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

A very high energy show from this California band. The band was very tight musically and pretty funny between songs. I would definatly see them again.
