STARS IN CONCERT:

Concertgoers are in for an emotional tour de force the minute indie pop collective Stars steps on stage. For more than two decades the he said-she-said dynamic of singers Torquill Campbell and Aimee Millan has been making fans swoon with sentimental bliss. Ticket buyers will be treated to highlights from the band's rich and diverse catalog of emotive tunes, from the heart-wrenching "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" to the tender "Do You Want To Die Together?". The vulnerability behind Campbell and Milan's soft voices pairs seamlessly with the band's flourishing instrumentation, resulting in a strikingly raw live experience fans won't want to miss.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Singer Torquill Campbell and keyboardist Christopher Seligman formed Stars in Toronto in 1998. The duo released their debut album Nightsongs in 2001 before rounding out their sound with bassist Evan Cranley, singer/guitarist Aimee Millan, and drummer Patrick McGee. Their sophomore effort, 2003's Heart, was a delicately crafted collection of chamber pop tunes that earned them a Juno nomination for Alternative Album of the Year and a co-headlining North American tour with Broken Social Scene. Their standout third album, 2004's Set Yourself On Fire, was recorded while the band lived under one roof during a harsh Canadian winter. The resulting set of melancholy tunes was critically praised and spawned some of the band's biggest hits to date including "Ageless Beauty" and "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead". Since then Stars has released six studio albums including 2012's electro pop-driven The North and 2014's surprisingly dance-heavy No One Is Lost.

Plagued by muddy mixes, both bands left a lot to be desired. Hey Rosetta, fine musicians based on their recordings, had trouble conveying their musical textures effectively. Headliners Stars are simply overhyped. Three good songs, with the rest a luke warm pastiche of late period disco and New Order. In short, its been done before, and done better.

    Tastes like dissapointment

by Anonymous on 2015-02-24Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

For some reason I was under the impression that Hey Rosetta! was the headlining band, and as I got to know people in the ridiculous line for the bathroom, which may have been the most entertaining part of the night, so did a lot of other people. I wanted to skip the opening band because I wasn't a very big fan of Stars, turns out I missed all of Hey Rosetta! Walked in during their last song. Now, of course, it's my own fault for skipping the first band, but that would have never have happened if I had known that Hey Rosetta was opening. But that raises the question why the hell would Hey Rosetta ever be an opening band?! I think it would be a lot better if the ticket clarified which band is the opener and which is the headliner, and many other people agreed. I left after 20 minutes because STARS IS REALLY THAT BAD OF A BAND, THEY SOUND TERRIBLE, IT WAS HILARIOUS. ugh 0/10

Amazing. Better live than on the albums. Hey Rosetta! sounded flawless and Stars was just a fun time.

Not being one for regular concert going, I loved Stars and Hey Rosetta! Being a committed Stars fan for going on 5 years now, I loved every minute of their performance. I also loved that Hey Rosetta! whom I have just recently discovered was not so much an opening act as a partner in performance, splitting the time equally between the two acts was perfect.

    Great show...wish it sounded better

by DJGyllburt on 2015-02-16The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Stars are one of my all time favorite bands so I was really looking forward to seeing them. I had also partied with the guys and gals in Hey Rosetta when they came through Waterloo and played the legendary Trepid House back in the day so I was looking forward to what was supposed to be a legendary concert...one for the books. The sound for Hey Rosetta was impeccible, the light show and set decor was above and beyond for an opening act so needless to say, as a sound tech and DJ who has been working in the business for many years, I was impressed. Then Stars came on...the crowd went nuts, the stage looked like a disco, the light show was spectacular and the band...wow...never fails to rock my world every time I see them (this is my third time seeing them live). Then Torq started singing the opening lines of "From The Night" off the new record, which I've played a few times at my DJ gigs and 7 times out of 10 danced to it. Only problem was that the sound mix was way off...Patty's drums sounded thunderous and bombastic as they should, the keyboards and guitars sounded shimmery and warm...the vocals on the other hand...no definition at all, way too much low mid and I could barely understand what Torq or Amy were singing half the time. All the FOH tech had to do was dial back some low mid and bring up 3k on the vocals and dare I say apply a hi-pass filter on the vocal mic and it would have been the perfect show. I was also hearing quite a bit of feedback...wasn't sure if it was from the stage because I didn't see any wedges on stage and I think Torq, Amy, Chris and Evan were on in-ear monitors. Probably came from Patty's drum wedge or if they were running side fills. Everyone else was having a great ol' time but I couldn't look past the rookie mistakes of Stars sound tech, especially knowing that myself and many other colleagues of mine who I respect and admire could make that band sound awesome.

    Well Done

by videe on 2015-02-15The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Great concert with two great bands and lots of energy. The sets were a little shorter than I would have expected especially given we went on the last night of the 3-night stay. But otherwise it was a lively and fun event.

Hey Rosetta were great, Stars were very mediocre

by Canes67 on 2015-02-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The place was surprisingly packed for the opener and they were great. Had never seen them before and only knew a couple of their songs from the radio but they put on a great show with great energy. Stars were disappointing. Had seen them twice before and they were great. The show was really really dark lighting wise. At times when the band was talking to the crowd the whole place was pitch black which was really bizarre. Most of the time you couldnt see the band members at all during the performance which I've never seen before. Have been to a hundred plus concerts in my life and have never seen this before. Just really strange vibe for a live show.

    Fantastic show

by Anonymous on 2013-04-14The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg, MB

This show was just great. First time I had been to the Garrick and it was a perfect venue for the show. I showed up a little early and had no problem scoring a spot with my friends, 3 people from the stage. Opening band Said The Whale were cool, but the show was really kickin' when Stars came on. Awesome performance from the band, great setlist, and a beautifully intimate conclusion. I definitely recommend you see Stars!

    Stars were good

    by DNA1 on 2013-04-11Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Stars is a group with a very nice sound and lots of energy. We enjoyed them. I think it remarkable that Montreal has produced at least two fine bands with a big, melodic, and energetic sound: Stars and Arcade Fire. We also enjoyed the opening band, Said the Whale.

    short and sweet!

by AndyC on 2013-04-09Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I never know if a band is going to start on time or not, so this time since I was coming from out of town I showed up later than usual. You should know Stars starts their shows on time! Very professional of them which I love but i missed the 'warm up' so I had to jump (literally) right in. They are such beautiful performers, their band members were incredible and the lighting and set was fun! Such beautiful voices!

    Reliving the 80's

by MissN on 2013-04-01The Odeon Events Centre - Saskatoon

I am completely unfamiliar with Stars music but had heard they were a good band so bought tickets for the heck of it. I took my boyfriend and we had a great time. They are a fun band and the music was straight from the 80's (which as we all know was, like, the best decade ever!) The male lead singer made a lot of positive references to Saskatoon - which surprised me - and it made me like the band even more.

    Best Stars performance yet

by paulH on 2013-03-31The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg

Truly a great experience. Great line up of songs...totally moving! Privileged to see such a amazing band in a small venue. Will totally go and see them when they return! The acoustics were not as good as the Walker or other venues (the microphones didn't carry the voices as good as they have in the past....). Great times.

    Stars: Fantastic as always!

by dansha on 2013-03-29The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg

As always, Stars put on an amazing show. They really know how to make the building come alive, and this show was no exception. Set list was a great mix of newer stuff and old favourites from their first few albums. Encore was phenomenal; the campfire rendition of "Favourite Book" had every person in the Garrick singing along. Said the Whale were great too! As someone who is not super familiar with their stuff, I still really enjoyed their set. They had a good mix of up tempo and mellower tracks. I'll definitely be listening to them now! Though the Garrick has a good atmosphere, I think that the Burt would have been better for this show. Saw Stars there a few years back and it was incredible. They have a way of making even a larger theatre like the Burt have the personal, intimate feel of a smaller show. I think that the Garrick was a bit small for how many people were there. It was just super packed and incredibly hot inside. The Burt probably could have been filled, especially considering that more people became aware of Stars' awesomeness after they opened for Metric in November. The sound was also a little off, as sometimes it was hard to hear the vocals over the music.
