Sufjan disappointed @ Massey Hall
by Joe3710 on 2015-05-05Massey Hall - TorontoWas really looking forward to this show, an opportunity to see Sufjan at a great venue, having listened to this artist for a good number of years. Last time I saw him live was on his Age of Adz tour when he hit Toronto. At that time, 90% of the material he played was from that most recent album. It bugged me a bit as I wouldve liked to hear a bit more from his back catalog which is so great, diverse and deep, but I respected the fact that he was on tour supporting a specific album so thats what he played. It was a good show and the material translated well live. Now, here we are with another tour and a new album, and the same rule held true. About 90% of the material Sufjan played this night was off his new album Carrie and Lowell, but for me, this time, the material fell really flat. I found the whole show boring and self indulgent. Everything seemed too rehearsed about it. I didnt connect with him, the material, or the performance. Overall, for material that is supposed to be so personal and meaningful, it felt bland and lifeless. It was all so predictable. I didnt find his home videos touching, I found them, again, self indulgent. Songs droned on without much depth or creativity. There are certain types of fans who will eat anything up by particular artists just because, and this was no exception. But for me this fell flat. Big time. Really disappointing.
