    Sufjan disappointed @ Massey Hall

    by Joe3710 on 2015-05-05Massey Hall - Toronto

Was really looking forward to this show, an opportunity to see Sufjan at a great venue, having listened to this artist for a good number of years. Last time I saw him live was on his Age of Adz tour when he hit Toronto. At that time, 90% of the material he played was from that most recent album. It bugged me a bit as I wouldve liked to hear a bit more from his back catalog which is so great, diverse and deep, but I respected the fact that he was on tour supporting a specific album so thats what he played. It was a good show and the material translated well live. Now, here we are with another tour and a new album, and the same rule held true. About 90% of the material Sufjan played this night was off his new album Carrie and Lowell, but for me, this time, the material fell really flat. I found the whole show boring and self indulgent. Everything seemed too rehearsed about it. I didnt connect with him, the material, or the performance. Overall, for material that is supposed to be so personal and meaningful, it felt bland and lifeless. It was all so predictable. I didnt find his home videos touching, I found them, again, self indulgent. Songs droned on without much depth or creativity. There are certain types of fans who will eat anything up by particular artists just because, and this was no exception. But for me this fell flat. Big time. Really disappointing.

    Great Concert!

    by EFM1 on 2010-12-18Massey Hall - Toronto

Sufjan Stevens is one of the most original and interesting musicians making music today. I was very excited to see him in concert at Massey Hall. I was highly entertained by the talent of Sufjan and his large band. They played exceptionally well and I wouldn't hesitate to see him again in concert! Highly Recommended!!

    Suj-yeah

by brentof on 2010-11-01Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I didn't like the album when I first heard it. It had auto-tune and electronica, more than the characteristic banjo and melodic narratives of previous efforts that I loved. Age of Adz was odd. The concert changed my mind. It is an album to be watched than listened to. The ten person ensemble on the stage, including dancers, was not what I expected, but it was pleasantly surprising. He performed for over 2 hours and the acoustics at the Orpheum were outstanding. One of the top three concerts I've seen. I would see him again in a moment.

    Didn't Like New Music

by VancouverIsland on 2010-10-30Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I was not enthused about the new music. I wanted to hear the older songs that I think everyone else in the crowd wanted to hear too.

    He's gone crazy.

by Awaber on 2010-10-30Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

When I went in to the concert I expected a quiet largely accoustic set with a moderately sized back up band of maybe 5 or 6 people. I hadn't heard the new album. He came out with 10 others in silver parachute pants. There were choreographed dance moves, electronic drums and general theatrics. Infact this was probably the closest I've come to a Britney Spears concert. And it was amazing! He played all the songs beautifully (dispite forgetting a few lines in a classic) and played for hours. Though it was not what I was hoping for nor expected it was an amazing show.

I want to marry Sufjan. Straight up.

by Fizzio on 2010-10-30Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Sufjan delivers such energy and passion to all this songs and his audience. Great music. Relaxing for the soul. It was exactly what I needed after a long and tortuous day at work. It also helps that he's very easy on the eyes. I also loved his little dance moves. Such a sexy voice (regular and singing) and a cute laugh. I'll be waiting for you to come back again, mister! :)
