Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

    Great Entertainment

by Flameswin on 2018-01-14Amalie Arena - Tampa

Atmosphere and production were excellent. Nice venue. Only complaint is the constant talking/show on the scoreboard that was too loud and never gave us time to talk our neighbors during the intermission.

by shinski on 2017-04-16Amalie Arena - Tampa

Amalie Arena is one of my favourite places to watch hockey, other than the Bell Centre. Great atmosphere outside pre-game, and lots of options on the concourse.

    Poor Sound System.

by Anonymous on 2017-03-19Amalie Arena - Tampa

Great seats. Poor audio. We were able to hear and understand the announcing of the goals or penalties clearings. All the other announcements and games or tributes had very poor sound. Very hard to understand.

Amalie Arena was great although their goal horn is a bit too loud. Luckily we didn't hear it that often.

    Great Arena

    by SXM022 on 2017-01-01Amalie Arena - Tampa

I had read a few reviews of the Amalie Arena and negative comments surrounded around security, getting in and out parking etc. We had a very easy time with the whole process and had 3 children with us. The entertainment before and during the game was the best Ive seen. The arena doesnt have a bad seat and we were in the very high 300 level. The arena is clean and the staff are extremely friendly. We parked very close for 20 bucks and ate at Fergs Live right across the street. Great service and good food. If your in Tampa hit up an event of any kind at this arena you will not be dissappointed!

    Birthday gift for husband

    by jules18509 on 2016-10-12Amalie Arena - Tampa

We sat in section 110 row M. The seats were not awesome as we could not see the other side of the rink and the top of the glass was right at eye level. We think if we sat on the second balcony just above where we were sitting then the viewing would have been better. On the same note, because of where we were sitting we were able to go right to the ice and see the players warming up before the game (up close and personal.... behind the glasss) which made for some good photos. Also Tampa fans hate PK Subban, not only did they boo him but I also got murderous looks and some comments when I clapped for his line after they scored!

    Hockey @ Amalie Arena

    by DaveB007 on 2016-04-27Amalie Arena - Tampa

Great venue for hockey. Only visited Tampa twice but both time we have been able to secure tickets for the Lightning hockey games and at reasonable prices(not like in Toronto!!!). Great sightlines throughout the arena and would recommend to go there when you visit Tampa. Too bad it has been the Habs vs Tampa each time we've been there!! Only drawback is that once the game was over there was not very many places still open for snacks & drinks nearby except Hooters which I do not recommend. need to work on this!!

    Seats were obstructed

by Bamer on 2016-03-14Amalie Arena - Tampa

I was seated in N13- Row 104 and there was a 1.5 metre railing directly in from of my seat ( picture attached of view from seat). I went to customer service and they new of the problem but couldn't provide me with another seat. Having travelled from Toronto, I was extremely upset and believe I should be refunded for my seat AND that this seat not be sold to others in the future ( reply pls)

    Lightning vs Red Wings

by neilloofthenorth on 2016-02-08Amalie Arena - Tampa

Great game; what I could see of it. Tickets were really hard to get, and more expensive by more than half from last year. The Lightning are beginning to look like they did at the end of last year. My problem is with the fans. We sat in Row E, right behind the Lightning bench. Among a group of fans who obviously didn't grow up watching hockey. They felt entitled to stand up whenever the spirit moved them. One guy actually sat on top of his seat, making seeing the game impossible for the two women sitting behind him. The police removed him finally. But many of the other fans seem to feel it's their right when they buy a ticket to stand and take selfies when the play is going on. They are allowed to come and go when the feel like it, ignoring the traditional rule of getting to and from your seat when the play has stopped. It was an evening of watching grown men being totally rude by taking pictures with their cell phones. They weren't interested in watching the game. They were interested in watching themselves watching the game. Maybe things will change when they move out of their parents' basements. Or maybe their parents will quit buying their tickets for them.

Great seats in the nose bleeds!

by Kimboma on 2016-02-01Amalie Arena - Tampa

The best part of this arena is the end zone where the organist plays. The bar is close, the people are friendly, and the game view is good. The lightning bolts on the ceiling are really neat when they electrify!

Lightning didn't play up to par

by sunbunny on 2016-01-02Amalie Arena - Tampa

Lightning didn't show up for this game. If they are going to make the playoffs they will have to start playing harder and show up every night.
