About

Unlike other '80s metal bands, Testament’s fan base hasn't diminished with the accumulation of years. In fact, when Testament dropped "Dark Roots of Earth" in 2012, the disc entered the Billboard 200 at No. 12, the highest chart position the band has seen in its career. As every ticket holder in the metal underground knows, Testament concerts are built on furious riffs and aggressive harmonies. In fact, Testament became known for their virtuosic control and melodic crunch, an approach to thrash metal that set them apart from their contemporaries, many of whom just wanted to play as fast and as loud as possible on tour. Whether Testament is playing new material in concert or classics from the '80s, be prepared for pyrotechnics, headbanging, moshing and a stage set that looks like the lurid artwork from one of their famous album covers.

The 1980s are considered the heyday of American thrash metal, and the Bay Area was a hotbed for bands that liked their riffs hard and their solos fast. No ardent fan or music critic would dispute that. Many metal bands that exploded onto the scene in the '80s and rode the wave of MTV exposure, being featured on the music network’s legendary "Headbanger’s Ball" program, fell into obscurity when '90s grunge became popular, but Testament continued to battle on. Testament's first three albums, which include "The Legacy" (1987), "The New Order (1988)" and "Practice What You Preach" (1989), are the bands most popular, beloved by metal heads around the globe. In a 30-year career that has featured 10 studio albums, four live albums, six compilations and 1.4 million records sold in the U.S., Testament continue to play fast and hard, touring all over the world with bands like Judas Priest, Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus and Lamb of God.

    Wished for more.

by justjoeinc on 2013-03-08The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

My favourite band is Testament. Period. But I'm reviewing the concert, so I won't let personal feelings get involved. I left feeling a bit ripped off. Overkill cancelled, due to illness. I was very excited to see them, they are incredibly talented. Ironbound is one of the best Metal songs I've ever heard, and was looking forward to seeing it live again. I do understand that circumstances sometimes dictate fate, and I can sympathize with them. I wish them the best and hopefully they'll come back soon. Testament should have timed the show a little differently. I think the Phoenix Concert Theatre's policy states that the show must end by 11pm. So they didn't perform an encore, and that just sucked. Since there was no Overkill, they could have timed it to end the set earlier and come out for a couple more songs before the curfew. I'm pretty sure they didn't add any songs to the set list they had for Toronto. I read a few of their previous set lists from this tour, and they seemed to play less here. Of course I'm greedy, and may be incorrect. I’m almost positive however, that they didn’t play any more to compensate the lack of Overkill. I spoke with other fans and many of them were disappointed by the cancellation. My final complaint, would be the lack of new material. They just put out another great album, Dark Roots of Earth. Not as good as The Formation of Damnation, but not much is. I personally was hoping for Native Blood. It was played at other venues. They didn't even play their title track, American Hate. Although Rise Up had to be played, it calls for audience interaction. And it was played well. I know that they have a lot of songs in their repertoire, I have trouble choosing my self, (and that's just to listen to). But I figured they'd want to promote it. As originally stated, they are my favourite band. Period. So it was awesome, they are awesome and I'll do it again.

    A 'Testament' to poor sound!

by Ogre21 on 2013-03-01Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Well, let's see if my review will get posted THIS time! It's quite annoying to spend the time to write a review and it never sees the light of day. My review for this show is the second time it has happened to me and both times were for Testament shows. Odd. Anyway... I have been to many Testament shows, at many different venues and I've never been disappointed...until now. The sound was HORRIBLE, the show was cut short and Chuck sounded like it was taking every bit of effort to struggle through each song. Testament should have followed Overkill's lead and just bowed out of the show, given fans a refund and returned at a later date when Chuck was feeling better. As it was, I was left with a very bitter taste in my mouth over the show. I spent good money to see my two favourite bands, Testament and Overkill, and quite honestly, I ended up feeling like I had seen NEITHER that night.

    Concert was disappointing

by MetalChick656 on 2013-02-20The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

The first two bands were great sounding then testament comes on you can't even hear chuck and you can still talk and hear each other over the music (the sound guy made up a excuse for this). AND THEY where only on for ONE HOUR that is stupid, I have never seen a headliner play for less then a hour and half to two hours. no overkill (mind you I can understand that he was sick) and no encore from testament either. what a big disappointing concert. I went to 3 other testament concerts and they were great then, no sound problems. They were on for the right amount of time.

    Could've been a lot better

by Warkhen on 2013-02-20The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

I'll be honest. I was there just for Testament. I had been seeing their previous setlists during the tour, and I was nothing short of excited. Testament, on the other hand, cut the show 20 minutes short, and didn't play most of the songs I was hoping. They played 12 songs, mostly old school (still good). The sound could've also been a lot better. You couldn't hear the guitars with clarity. Everything sounded on top of each other. I think the Phoenix needs to work on its sound if it wants to keep being a concert theatre, because this also happened with the Kreator concert in 2012. All in all, I'm still happy I got to go to one of Testament shows. I'm just disappointed it was a lousy one.

    Testament Vocals were lacking

by KMan65 on 2013-02-20The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

A pretty good show. Flotsam and Jetsam were awesome!! Too bad Overkill couldn't make it. The Testament band played awesome but the Vocals were very much in the background. Maybe it was a sound thing but I was expecting much better.

    Heaviest band ever!

by Testamantis on 2011-02-28The commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Testament is one of the very few bands that have been rocking for so many years and still sounding as heavy and great as you expect them to be. With Chuck's amazing roars ,Alex Skolnick's undeniable technique and musical taste you get a band with the energy that could make your night the best experience of your life. Would def recommend it to anyone who enjoyd some great metal! Let the metal flow!! \III/

    Into The Pit

by sxrxnrr on 2009-07-13Sound Academy - Toronto

What an amazing thrash laden evening! Unearth and Testament seem like an unlikely pair but go together like salty and sweet. OH yeah!!! This show was not all ages therefore beer was enjoyed while we were front and centre. Although there were many old school thrashers in attendance, they were not able to resist the urge to jump into the pit! Fun was had by all and there were no teenagers out for blood in the mele. Had one of the greatest times of my life and will be bragging about it for years to come. Thanks dudes :ox
