by QOAT on 2014-07-25National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaWhat a great show! From the very beginning until the very end, I was laughing - as was everyone else in the theatre. Very clever, well written, great music, beautiful voices. I have already told several people about this fabulous joyful entertaining show.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Close but no cigar
by Dogwhisperer on 2014-07-24National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaProfessional props and excellent use of them. Balance between orchestra and singers now adjusted correctly. Story line fun but not too insulting to religion. All singers had good voices. Acting at a professional level as expected at this price. A major defect however was the quality of the sound system as it sounded like the siungs were coming from the bottom of a barrel which made it extremely difficult to catch all the words and thus missed at lot of the jokes.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Irreverent and hilarious!
by ErinC on 2014-07-24National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaI would absolutely recommend this show to anyone - as long as you don't have an aversion to strong language! Hilarious, irreverent, and clever.

Rating: 4 out of 5 The Book of Mormon
by MikeinOttawa on 2014-07-23National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaVery impressed, much that is good, but the portrayal of Uganda/Africans never rose above the worst of stereotypes. A critic named Hassan Malik was, I think, correct in saying that "criticism of religion, however constructive, satirical or well intentioned, ( lulls ) an otherwise progressive audience into passivity on the issue of racism. It is as if it is considered a worthy sacrifice to the critique of religion." I guess you could think of it as a "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" format, the black characters are cartoon stereotypes and Uganda is "Toontown" (an imaginary place that does not and cannot exist). It's still worth seeing as a satire and a parody of religion and of some religious attitudes and also perhaps a parody of the toothlessness of other recent Broadway musical offerings.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Book of Mormon was hysterical!
by zogubear on 2014-07-23National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaThe only reason I didn't give five stars was because, although I could hear every word, sometimes I couldn't distinguish the lyrics in a group number. Some people were offended by the language and left the theatre. That being said, I giggled from the first moment, loved the music and costumes and thought the roles were particularly well cast. Having lived several years in Africa, there were some right on the button insights.
Rating: 5 out of 5 The Book of Mormon is hilarious!!!
by Philabel on 2014-07-23National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaGreat singng and dancing. We laughed and had such a great time, from beginning to end.in fact, it went way too fast. There seems to have been some. Issues with the sound at times, where it was too low. This took away from the power of the song "I believe".
Rating: 5 out of 5 Hilarious!!
by Bosko on 2014-07-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaI've scene a few musicals both in Ottawa and on Broadway and by far, this is the best! I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an entertaining evening full of laughs .
Rating: 5 out of 5 The Book of Mormon was Awesome!
by zoet on 2014-07-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaThis was one of the best performances of any kind that I have ever seen. The singing and dancing was amazing. The personality of the performers shone through.....it seemed like they were having the best time of their lives! I am familiar with "South Park" and had read a bit about the musical prior to going, so the swearing and leud gestures was not shocking to me..... in fact I felt it was quite appropriate. And FUNNY!!! I cannot believe how funny the Book of Moron was. The two male leads were amazing. The female lead had the most beautiful voice. I hope Trey Parker and Matt Stone continue to write. I was absolutely entertained and would highly recommend The Book of Mormon.

Rating: 3 out of 5 It was ok
by Echoes24 on 2014-07-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaThe choreography and the songs were really good, the performers did a superb job as well. However, for something that Matt Stone and Trey Parker came up with, it wasn't really all that funny. I'm kind of disappointed I spent so much on a ticket. Oh well, what can you do.

by Anonymous on 2014-07-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaThe sound was off. I believe it was too loud and as a result some to the words were not clear. I thought the whole story line was bad bad bad. I felt that it was an insult to the Ugandan people. The name of the rebel general was not funny but stupid. I don t mind profanity in a show but the F word was not used at the appropriate time. The singing and dancing were alright
Rating: 5 out of 5 Hilarious! Great evening
by jwahkan on 2014-07-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaIn typical Trey and Matt style this show hit all the required comedy elements you'd expect from this hilariously intelligent duo. Thanks for keeping me laughing so many years later! Hasa Diga eeBowai!

Rating: 4 out of 5 An equal opportunity offender
by MFBrockville on 2014-07-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaI thoroughly enjoyed The Book of Mormon, although in recommending to friends/family, I would have to carefully consider the values and opinions of the person. This play is, as my review title states, an equal opportunity offender, speaking to so many prejudices, religions, beliefs, myths, etc. It is all about shock value which is no less than one would expect from the writers. However, if you can get past the gasps every time you are astounded at the boldness with which they hit on taboo subjects, you will enjoy a very amusing and energetic show. Not being particularly religious, I was absolutely entertained at all of the shock value and could only imagine the faces of several people I know had they been in attendance. The music was great and the audience seemed to really enjoy it.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Great experience and good laugh
by gi1mo2 on 2014-07-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaThis was a last minute decision, and didn't know what to expect. I was pleasingly surprised. Haven't laughed that much in a long time. Great scenario, songs and dances. Great cast.
Rating: 3 out of 5 BOM...BOMbed for me
by NYC123 on 2014-07-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaAfter all the hype, I must say I was disappointed in this production. The approach to the subject matter seemed to trivialize the recent history of Uganda. The attempts to shock with language and image were, in my opinion, just vulgar. I cannot imagine how a Ugandan would feel watching this play. The ridicule of the Mormon religious beliefs - well - I guess that was the point. On the positive side, the sets were fabulous. The cast was energetic, although the songs seemed indistinct from any other popular musical of the last 15 years. I didn't come away humming anything.
Rating: 5 out of 5by Chengo on 2014-07-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa The music was catchy and the dancing was very funny. All in all I enjoyed the show.
