Awesomeness!!! Amazing music, Didn't want the night to end!
All in all it was a great show. Sharon is an amazing singer but the show was kind of scripted. The lead guy didn't seem like he wanted to be there at all. Never smiled or showed any emotion. As far as the sound goes, couldn't hear the horn section loud enough.
Well, yes it does. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings were unbelievably great. She is one hard working lady. The Dap Kings are perfectly understated. But the venue sucked. The sound was marginal for Sharon and terrible for the warm up act.
The only thing distracting from the amazing show were the standing room spectators who blocked our view of the stage and the artists performing.
I loved the show, I liked the fact that the singers were introduced and sang first, it was energetic, fun, the woman never stops! Her voice is so powerful and in additiion she invited the audience to dance with her on stage, she was very welcoming. I would definitely go back and see her and I loved the venue. The Bronson Centre is a great place to see a concert.
Part Tina Turner, Part James Brown. High octane performance. Loved it!!!
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have an energy unlike any performers I have had the pleasure of seeing perform live. There wasn't a moment during the show that I wasn't completely captivated and the crowd at the Commodore was crazy for the music.
Sharon Jones is The Hardest Working Woman in Show Business. And you can instantly tell where she gets it from. I saw James Brown live a number of times and anyone who has will agree there was no show like it. Everything about Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings is modeled on a James Brown and the Famous Flames revue. But, hey, if you're gonna do an homage, what better place to start. This is a non-stop, high-energy, super-tight show. More than that, they perform with real passion. The set was about two hours and 20 minutes and by the encore, Sharon must have run a half marathon on the stage and the trumpet player was standing in a pool of his own sweat. If you can, see them. They earn their pay. And you will come away with an unforgettable evening.
the lady is pure energy, her voice is amazing, the band incredible. a great show, the entire room was rocking. sharon gave a "2 thumbs up" performance from beginnig to 2 hours and 20 minutes later!! sharon- please return to vancouver real soon!!
Great energetic show from what I would say, a female James Brown....so good
Any chance you get to see the Queen of Funk you should go immediately. A consummate performer, and an instant crowd pleasure Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings can turn your night into one of the most fun you will ever experience. Any time she is in town, you can expect to see me there.
Sharon Jones and her amazing band The Dap Kings are bringing actual performance back to the stage. To see them put on a show is like going back in time to when tight ten-piece bands were used to back super-energetic performers. This lady puts on a show. It's moving. She brings people up from the audience, even. Plus she sang for two hours. If you ever have a chance to see Sharon Jones, please don't pass the opportunity up.
I'm a big of Sharon Jones music, and had high expectations for her concert (set in part from concert goers from previous concerts). While I've ranked the entire night as 4 stars, I've got to say I was a little dissappointed in her connection with the audience. She played well to the front of the room, but didn't emote to the rest of the audience (and I was fairly close). And through 4 or 5 of her songs, she was fiddling with her ear piece while trying to manically belt out her hits, which left her very disengaged. You could see band members looking at her and at each other, signaling something was wrong. I was also surprised how many times she closed her eyes to sing. She's a flamboyant singer, and fun to watch, but the real gem of the eve was in the band. If you go, make sure you take a moment to listen to each of the rich interactions of all of the instruments (not just the typical drum & singing). The bass guitar is especially fun to follow, as it often diverts from the standard beat.
Sharon Jones is like James Brown is a really great dress!! Full of energy, the Dap Kings are fabulous. They played a solid two hour set. She danced, she bantered, and she knocked it out of the park with her incredible voice. She pulled people up on stage to dance with her ...If you get a chance -- go see this gang!!!!!
Wonderful stage presence, skilled band. Good balance of instruments and vocal, unlike the opening act, which had a great vocalist and a stupid sound mix on guitars and drums that completely undermined the singer. Sound Academy in Toronto is a pretty good venue, but crowded and you stand FOREVER. Sightlines are brutal. Sharon, next time you come to Toronto, play a better location, like Massey Hall.
Sharon Jones and the Dap kings are Dip-Dap-tastic. This tour is to promote their newest ablum "I learned the hard way" available in stores (and chapters, and starbucks...) NOW!! The tickets said the concert started at 8pm. People went into the Sound academy around 9pm. 'Heavy' played 9:30-10pm...Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings took stage a little after 10:30pm. It was so worth the wait. The Dap Kings are a tight band. Musically they are incredible. Energetic - and they get the crowd going. Top that off with the goddess Sharon Jones herself - the music is mindblowing, and the atmosphere was fun and fresh. And that woman can cut a rug! I wouldn't have changed a thing. It was an incredible concert. I would have paid twice as much for tickets.
This woman, this band, is incredible! I cried out of the overwhelming joy in the building, the fun, the laughter, the theatricality! If you've never heard of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, it doesn't matter, just go, it will make you feel so alive!
Went with my daughter and did not know (it was not on the tickets) that it was a 19+ event. Had to send her home in a cab. Then after arriving at 8:00, the openers did not start until after 9:30 (they were so so at best) and SJDK did not start until after 10:30. Excellent show once it finally started but I couldn't wait for the show to end so I could go to bed.
With subtle persuasion and an outrageous performance Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings threw down at the Sound Academy on May 25th. Fabulous singing, great dancing, hilarious audience participation and a super tight band made for a great night. The room was definitely a lot moister post-show! Too bad some (not all) of the bar staff had attitude problems, otherwise a perfect night out at a great venue.
