About

Formed in 1999, The National have established themselves as mainstays of arenas and festivals with sold-out performances and headlining slots around the world. The band has scored five top 10 albums on The Billboard 200, multiple Grammy nominations with 2017's Sleep Well Beast earning the award for Best Alternative Album, consisting of Matt Berninger (vocals) fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

The National dropped not one but two new albums in 2023. First Two Pages of Frankenstein was released in April, followed by a surprise album Laugh Track in September, both on 4AD. Across two albums worth of new material they were joined by Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, Roseanne Cash, Bon Iver and Sufjian Stevens. 2023 was their best live year yet, selling out shows in North America and Europe, including Madison Square Garden, LA's Greek Theatre and Alexandra Palace in London.

Named one of their "Best Albums of 2023", Rolling Stone called First Two Pages of Frankenstein "...a remarkable reassertion of their potency and shared commitment...Nine albums deep, the National found new energy by conjuring not just a great, suffocating fog but also the far light that guides the way out." They were also named Forbes's "Band of the Year", with the article stating, "All The National did in 2023 was release two superb albums ... have a brilliant sold-out tour, deliver the festival set of the year with their riveting performance at BottleRock and collaborated with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Swift and Sufjan Stevens. The National are so consistently great it becomes easy to take for granted they will be at the top of their game. But even by their lofty standards this was an incredible year." And The New Yorker's Amanda Petrusich named it as one of her favorites of the year, saying if you already like "what the National has been doing for the past two-plus decades - making brooding, fraught, atmospheric rock and roll, marked by careful, resonant production and a ribbon of debauched humor--you are likely to also savor First Two Pages of Frankenstein, a heady encapsulation of the band's entire gestalt."

    Great Concert...Great Setting

by Eric on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

This was the first concert I had been to in several years, and it lived up to and even surpassed expectations. The band was tight, focused, and well prepared. Matt has an incredible stage presence, and seems to be truly in his element performing for, and interacting with fans. Their song selection was from works both new and old, both favourites as well as material I had not heard before. The crowd also had a positive, friendly energy about them, and it was possible to sit or stand wherever you wanted without any negative vibe whatsoever. I was a bit concerned with sound quality in the outdoors with the potential of wind gusts messing things up, but the sound crew had things dialed. Both the instrumentals and the voices were perfectly clear, and I was able to greatly appreciate the technical virtuosity of the players. The band came on stage at exactly 8:00 and played for a full 2 hours...these guys are not slouches. To the contrary, they are consummate pros! I had a wonderful time!

    Always a treat

by AK on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

Love this band, will see them every time they are in town. They are a huge band but always throw these personal shows. The venue is the best in Van but it was very slow and inefficient getting through the gates this time, felt like staff weren’t sure what to do to get people in quickly

One of my new fav venues with fav band

    by M. M. on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

This show was AMAZING! This venue is perfect, the slop of the field works great, anywhere you sit you get a great view. The National themselves are true artists and entertainers. I also enjoyed Soccer Mommy the opening band.

Great concert, great venue - not great event management

by Dan on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

The National put on a fantastic show - some older songs, some new, really entertaining and engaged with the crowd. Might be my favorite concert ever. (5 stars) Deer Lake park was a great venue.(5 stars) Event management was not great - long slow lines to get in - security did not seem to have enough people and they were inefficient (actually missed half of Soccer Mommy even though we arrived 45 minutes before start time). (1 star) Food and drink lines were long and service was so slow. I gave up.(1 star)

Love the National, amazing show and seeing a show at Deer Lake Park is one of my favorite venues on a Summer evening! When the lights go on as the sunsets, it’s idyllic! Thank you National for an awesome night!

    Wicked. They killed it.

by cw on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

1000% better than the last show, where Matt had no voice - ha! Really amazing - Matt walking out through the crowd so much, guitarists "talking to the crowd" more than usual,.. just a great show, best I've seen them yet (4x now). Missing: a little more Boxer/Alligator would be amazing ("Lit up", All the Wine, No Friend of Mine" etc

    Raw & Real...As Expected!

by Vans on 2022-08-16Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Fantastic show at the Jubilee Auditorium. They played many of my favourite songs, as well as some new material and all of it was dressed with their raw and real lyrics soothed by their melodic tunes. I love they chose the theatre for their show and really appreciated the guitar work more so than usual at this show. Great performance!! Come back soon!!

Best Concert in Memory, Just Go See Them

by GAJG on 2022-08-12Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I have always liked The National but this concert made me realize what a remarkable group of musicians they really are. They are phenomenally talented, and superb entertainers. The stage show was simply amazing. The play list was new and old, and just great. The energy they put in, and the fun they had was astounding. If you have a chance, don't wait for a second. Bartees Stange was also really good, especially when he played with The National.

Best concert I've been to in a long time!

by Luna on 2022-08-10Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

This was such a good concert and one of the best concerts I've been to in a long time. They put on such a good performance and put so much energy into it. I don't even the words to describe how much of good concert it was and how much they connected with the audience.

Not many concerts where you tremendously enjoy every song. Drummer brings a lot to every song in a creative, unique and appropriate way.

The only thing I have to add to the title is, if you are short and are going to MTelus, get there early if you want to see the show.
