About

Formed in 1999, The National have established themselves as mainstays of arenas and festivals with sold-out performances and headlining slots around the world. The band has scored five top 10 albums on The Billboard 200, multiple Grammy nominations with 2017's Sleep Well Beast earning the award for Best Alternative Album, consisting of Matt Berninger (vocals) fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

The National dropped not one but two new albums in 2023. First Two Pages of Frankenstein was released in April, followed by a surprise album Laugh Track in September, both on 4AD. Across two albums worth of new material they were joined by Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, Roseanne Cash, Bon Iver and Sufjian Stevens. 2023 was their best live year yet, selling out shows in North America and Europe, including Madison Square Garden, LA's Greek Theatre and Alexandra Palace in London.

Named one of their "Best Albums of 2023", Rolling Stone called First Two Pages of Frankenstein "...a remarkable reassertion of their potency and shared commitment...Nine albums deep, the National found new energy by conjuring not just a great, suffocating fog but also the far light that guides the way out." They were also named Forbes's "Band of the Year", with the article stating, "All The National did in 2023 was release two superb albums ... have a brilliant sold-out tour, deliver the festival set of the year with their riveting performance at BottleRock and collaborated with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Swift and Sufjan Stevens. The National are so consistently great it becomes easy to take for granted they will be at the top of their game. But even by their lofty standards this was an incredible year." And The New Yorker's Amanda Petrusich named it as one of her favorites of the year, saying if you already like "what the National has been doing for the past two-plus decades - making brooding, fraught, atmospheric rock and roll, marked by careful, resonant production and a ribbon of debauched humor--you are likely to also savor First Two Pages of Frankenstein, a heady encapsulation of the band's entire gestalt."

    “My Mind’s Not Right…

    by Cailin on 2023-08-23

….Because that show blew my mind. The National have long been my favourite band and I’ve seen many a great show of theirs, but nothing compares to the magic that was this show on a great Sunday evening at Budweiser Stage. An amazing crowd, a brilliant setlist, and the entire band was on fire. And having Patti Smith as an opening act? Nothing could make that evening any more perfect. I’ll be thinking of this show for years to come.

    The National rocked

    by Brad Goodman on 2023-08-23

The National put on a fantastic show. Great venue (even forgot about how tight the seats are a budweiser stage). The opening acts were disappointing, but that’s just my preference. I would have liked a cover song. I just think that’s a memorable experience. A guest musician would have been cool too. Otherwise, it was a really good show, the setlist, the sound, the performance, lighting…all great. Would highly recommend catching The National live. Would go to budweiser stage again.(though it really is really tight in those seats). Want to try the lawn seating next.

    AMAZING!

    by Sarah Ryan on 2023-08-23

The National was incredible! Much better than I was even expecting. The sound was so clear and the visuals were amazing! He went into the crowd. I was on the lawns and everyone stood up for the entire set once they hit the stage. I didn't want the show to end!

    Not Their best show!

    by Deano on 2023-08-23

The National are one of the best bands in the World! But the Toronto show did not have as many classic songs, and less energy. I’d call it “slow show” :)

    Greatest Concert Ever!

    by DOPE!! on 2023-08-23

What can I say other than this was the greatest concert I have ever been too! The National is one of those bands everyone, even if you aren't a fan, should see. There is just a certain itch inside the brain that gets scratched! Also, Patti Smith, HOLY SHIT! I went from casually listening to Patti Smith, to Patti Smith STAN within 10 minutes of her getting on stage. What an amazing experience!

    Don't Miss The National Live

by Jer @ SBS on 2023-06-12Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

Though I've only ever seen'em twice myself, and both times at the same venue outside at Deer Lake Park in the ol' sunshine of the Lower Mainland here in beautiful BC...The National are a band that never disappoints. The first time I saw them was amazing, this most recent was even better! Completely awesome all-around, and a brilliant set of two hours worth of music. You might know all of the songs, you might not - honestly, it won't affect how much you enjoy ALL of the music and the way they put their hearts into their performances.

    Terrible

Missed the opening act because of the debacle at the gate and waited in line for over an hour

    Fabulous band, terrible venue

by KA on 2023-06-09Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

The National were amazing. Deer Lake is beautiful but the logistics were a nightmare. The gate was lined up in one of the longest I have seen. There was not enough food or beverages and the wait times were atrocious. I will not go back there again.

Band was good, venue was badly organized

by Daz on 2023-06-09Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

I haven’t been to see a concert at Deer Lake Park since before the pandemic and it’s changed a lot as far as how it is organized. It took us almost an hour just to get through the gates and then another 30 minutes just to get a drink. Then they closed the beer gardens an hour before the end of the concert. It is a beautiful place and venue for an outdoor concert but would have thought they would have been better prepared for a concert on a Monday night too I might add.

Music was AMAZING, operations were meh

by Patron of the Church of Music on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

This is the second time I have seen The National at Deer Lake. The performance is always amazing. But this time around, it was slightky overshadowed by the wait times. The lineups for admission and drinks were outrageous. We were in line to buy drinks 20 mins before the headliner was set to start, the music started on time while we were still waiting. Disappointing. Suggest keeping drink sales open for longer than a half hour after a headliner starts. One bonus was no lineups for the clean bathroom stalls. That's something. Otherwise, GREAT show. Would pay to hear these guys live again and again.

    Everyone was just listening!

Brought the crowd to the most beautiful moment of complete silence then built it back to a wall of sound…amazing!

    great band mediocre venue

by nationalfan on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

The National were incredible and would have been if they'd been playing in a Winners. The venue was pretty, but the event was badly run: The lineup to get in was huge, and most of us in it missed the support act. Also, the beer ticket thing has got to go, it is the year of our lord 2023.

    Beautiful Scenery, LOUD

by Jojo on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

We love seeing shows at Deer Lake Park! The herons and geese often add to the show, and there are great food/drink options. It's a nice community feeling compared to indoor concerts. Sadly, we forgot our earplugs for this event, and even sitting at a fair distance it was uncomfortably loud. Hearing loss is both cumulative and irreversible, so we left early. We want to continue to enjoy live music, and hear it well, as we age. We rode our bikes to the event - it would be amazing to have more bike parking, and in a perfect world, bike valet.

One of my favourite concert experiences

by Eve on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

I love The National’s music yet did not previously appreciate the high level of musicianship from the band and playing multiple instruments. They put out tons of energy, connecting with the audience. Matt Berninger’s deep, baritone voice and lyrics are captivating, and his performance is beyond engaging. He has this cool fire about him and reached out to the audience physically multiple times. The audience was bursting with love.

    Good show

by Ari on 2023-06-08Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

The band was perfect. It would have been nice if there had been a designated area for people wanting to sit. A lot of people got there early and got good spots and then everyone stood up around them and it was impossible to see. Some people can’t stand for long periods of time so it would be nice to take that into consideration.
