  • Overall, wonderful!

by krob on 2022-12-27Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

The Nutcracker was absolutely delightful and a highlight of our holiday activities. The dancers were spectacular, the costumes were wonderful (especially loved the mice, toy soldiers and wolves!). I missed only two things from the old version I saw the Alberta Ballet put on when I was a child….. the growing tree (it used to grow enormously!) and Mother Ginger’s gigantic hoop skirt where her children used to run out from. Those were magical and memorable pieces that were missing from this version! Overall, still wonderful!

  • Eating and talking during ballet

by Disappointed on 2022-12-27Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Family behind us sang along to familiar melodies played by orchestra, child kept loudly asking “is that real?” “Do they talk”through the entire first act. Then the family brought out chip bags or something equally loud and started munching away. Second act, child sat on grandma’s lap and kicked our chairs…for the rest of the ballet.

  • Mediocre

Disappointing they turned a 3 hr show down to 2 hours and also disappointing they no long give out playbills.

  • Meh

by Cec on 2022-12-26Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I’ve been going to the nutcracker here for 10 yrs. I wasn’t prepared this year to see the colourful, international pieces taken out of the second half. I found it bland this year. The music is fantastic and the skill of the dancing is good. I missed the men, the big jumps and the excitement. For the price of the tickets, I left underwhelmed.

  • I was expecting more

by Maxim on 2022-12-26Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

Ballet dancers are so-so. The choreography is poorly designed. Small orchestra strings group produces a thin sound for Tchaikovsky music. It looks like at high ticket prices; production is on a strict budget. Not impressed at all. The only good thing there were decorations. It looked good.

  • SO wonderful!!!

by Keira Bonham on 2022-12-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The ballet had a few changes this year and we absolutely loved them. The choreography was amazing, the ambiance perfectly elegant, a 10/10 experience. This has become a annual tradition for our family and will remain as such for many, many years to come. Bravo!

  • Good

Good. The nutcracker performance really showed the true beauty and potential of ballet.

  • Great performance

by AngieTI on 2022-12-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I really enjoyed the ballet. However, it is very sad that the venue sells a lot of drinks on plastic cups and people bring food. I felt like I was in the movie theater. People were chewing, making noice with their snack bags, and discussing the performance. It is so disrespectful for the other people around and the artists themselfs. The vanue shouldn't encourage thos kind of behavior by selling stuff. I will never go there again.

  • Remake

The remake this year was ok. I have to say I preferred it before as I’ve gone every year.

  • Disappointed

by Popi on 2022-12-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

I have been taking my Granddaughters to the Nutcracker Suite for 18 years minus the pandemic 2 years. The last few years have been disappointing for myself as well as my granddaughters. The show has been shortened and the scenery has been downsized a great deal making the story a bit hard to follow for the younger people. Parts of the story that my granddaughters were looking forward to were removed. Being that the nutcracker has been a tradition for us I would not want to miss it next year but I may have to check out other options.

  • Perfect Christmas outing

by Efcmama on 2022-12-24Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

We go to the Nutcracker every year and it never disappoints! Beautiful dance, music, scenery. The only thing I didn’t like this year is that they cut the Cossack dancers, in the Russian costumes, and had a solo dancer. Why?

  • Worse show in 35 years

by Deb on 2022-12-24Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

Worse version of the Nutcracker in 35 years of attending. Set design and costumes were unimaginative and lost the kid's attention quickly. Highlights like the plum fairy were sadly staged and no one new to the show would even know she was the plum fairy. The opening scene looked like a deserted hall way instead of a fabulous setting for Xmas.

  • Like a dream

by Shihab on 2022-12-24Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Is was one of the most unforgettable night, the grace, beauty and the mastery of every and each movement of that charming show, the music the lighting, every thing was in one word beautiful.

  • Disappointed

by Reviewer on 2022-12-24Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The Nutcracker ballet is a tradition my family does over Christmas. I was really disappointed this year because the ballet left out 4 of the unique dances. The Russian, Arab, Chinese and Spanish dances were not included and I cannot fathom why. Instead we got more sugar plum faeries, which really the dancing all looks the same. There was no variety. They also shortened the scene with the rat king, I blinked and it was over. They also didn’t include the fact that Clara is supposed to fall asleep under the Christmas tree and then reawaken there as well. The orchestra was amazing, and all the dancing and costumes was beautiful. Unfortunately though this may no longer be a tradition as my family was really disappointed.

  • An annual family event.

by Alan on 2022-12-23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The changes to the choreography this year were an unexpected treat. Interpretation and the live music are what makes this show a must see for everyone. Not just seasoned ballet patrons.

  • Poor

by Miryam on 2022-12-23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I found that Alberta Ballet Nutcracker is not like before!’’ Maybe because it has extended more days ….is a different version than the original one ( performed only few days) thé overallIl Coreography and scenery didn’t have the same impact as before! Also the Arabian, Spanish,Ukranian, and Chinese dances will be nicer with their traditional outfit!. I don’t know I seen other versions of rthe nutcracker….. something different…is not the same feeling anymore.
