Great experience especially because we knew someone performing in it.
My experience goes beyond just the performance, which was completely spectacular! I arrive for the show earlier than my purchased time, they managed to get me into the show i arrived for and put us in even better seats. The shows scenery was fantastic, it was so immersive and detailed and the performers were so well rehearsed! They put on a fabulous show and as my daughters first ballet performance, its jot one she will soon forget!
The Nutcracker was "updated" this year. Speaking as someone who saw the previous version and loved it, this update was a serious downgrade. The shortened version makes it feel like you didnt even go to a ballet at all. The removal of the world inspired dances felt cheap and less culturally sensitive than having them in. Celebrating other cultures through sharing of dance is honourable. It brings awareness to cultural differences and shows a shared love and inspiration that is dance. Taking these out was a poor choice. The lack of dancers during some scenes made the choreogrpahy feel like it didn't match the music. So many dances felt the same and lacked interest as only one dancer was on stage. The choices of what songs to cut short were also ill advised. The dancers did a beautiful job on their performances. The music was played to perfection. My grievances are with the production and choreography choices alone. To be honest I wouldn't recommend going this year. Hopefully next year they revist their revisions and a full and robust production will happen instead of this short, and not-so-sweet stand-in.
This is our yearly treat for the girls in our family for over 20 years and this was the first time we ALL walked away disappointed. They took all the personality, colour and feeling out of the fabulousness that is the Nutcracker. They whitewashed the costumes through to the dancing. No creativity.
The first half of the production was good, dancing, set design and costumes. The second half was very disappointing. The dancing was fantastic, but it didn't follow the story line, set design boring and didn't change and lacked in costumes. The other productions I've gone to was fun to watch. Was my first time taking my 9 yr old granddaughter and she was in awe the first half. Second half she became restless, myself included. Overall, first half good, second half disappointing.
While we tried to enjoy this wonderful ballet it was difficult as the guests behind us were a bit disrespectful. I understand that attending the afternoon performances (we are from out of town and needed travel time) includes children however we also understood that NO food or drinks were allowed in the theatre. We had hot chocolate spilled on us, the back of our seats constantly kicked, and the irrigation of listening to a twizzlers package being played with for most the the second half. When we asked then to please stop we were harshly told..."They are just children!". Yes but what a great opportunity to teach these children theater etiquette!
Jubilee theatre was fine, decent seating, friendly staff. Not enough people to serve the lines for refreshments and snacks. The ballet itself was disappointing. Extremely vanilla, costumes were lackluster and not colourful, we were bored a lot and we love the ballet. There were some talented dancers but they couldn't save the whole performance. Went on a Saturday night.
It's such a joy after a long pandemic. People join together again to enjoy the good and beautiful things in life. The dancers are excellent. I also love the scenery. And the performance of the little ones bring smile to me.
We loved the Christmas tree in the lobby that was decorated with ballet shoes. The covered parking next to the bldg is convenient. Our first time ever at the Nutcracker and it was awesome!!!! Bravo to an amazing performance.
Loved the music!! The Calgary philharmonic orchestra is amazing and played the music excellent. The ballet/dances were so well done. Acting was also fantastic well done!! Definitely will go again to the nutcracker :) The only thing I request is please don’t let customers bring food in during the act!!! I had a family behind me and they kept talking and opening the bag of chips, was very annoying! Please change this for future performances.
The first half of Alberta Ballet’s Nutcracker this year was as wonderful as always and my 6-year-old companion was enthralled! The second half really disappointed us both: no candy dances! It seemed like an extended series of Sugar Plum Fairy, Nutcracker and Waltz of the Flowers dances. No printed program made it difficult for us as well. Who were the dancers? Why were the Cossack and Chinese number scratched? What comes next?
Me and my daughter absolutely love the Nutcracker ballet. We do it every year and it never dissapoints us.
A great performance complimented by the CPO. Changes in the 2nd act were interesting to note as the acts from around the world were in ballet costumes and not the regional costumes. As always it was a pleasure to enjoy the commitment and athleticism the performers have to their craft!
Took my 20 and 22 year old daughters to see this for the very first time. We all loved the performance. Very well done.
It was charming. My young grand daughter was mesmerized and particularly loved the mice. Wonderful to have the Calgary Philharmonic there too.
I had mistakenly shown up the day after our scheduled performance. The staff of the Alberta Ballet and the Jubilee were kind enough to give us equivalent tickets for the day we showed up even though we were one day late. That will not be forgotten. I will always be a ballet supporter. Max
From the live orchestra to the amazing dancers, breathtaking
The costumes, sets and colours were gorgeous! The rats and wolves animation was terrific! The ballet dancers superb! The orchestra impeccable! Much more than I was expecting.
I attend the Nutcracker every year with my granddaughters and this year was less than wonderful. The ticket prices were significantly higher (I’ve never seen so many empty seats, obviously too high) and the performance was a bit lacklustre. They changed some of the content and I missed the old performances. This is a tradition we have to attend the Nutcracker but I’m not sure it will continue.
Disappointed that people were let inside the theatre even after the show began only to disturb the audience and the show
