  • Disappointed with the Jubilee Auditorium

by LC on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Nutcracker production was amazing however, was disappointed in the Jubilee Auditorium. There were two productions/day and we went to the 6:00 p.m. production (first one was at 1:00 p.m.). There were drinking cups all over under the seats where we were seated. This is expected from a hockey rink but not the Jubilee.

  • It was wonderful!

My granddaughter loved all the interactive things to do before the show. Costumes were beautiful, what a show the dancers put on very well done. They were wonderful Really enjoyed the orchestra as well.

  • Nutcracker review

by Su za on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

The backdrops were amazing!! The choreography was ok. The storyline was hard to follow if you didn’t know the story well (my son). The main ballerina was not synchronized with the orchestra (doing a solo), or maybe it was the other way around? I don’t know. I was disappointed with the price I paid compared to the overall quality. The theatre was under-staffed which caused a lot of delays entering the theatre and a huge delay at the refreshments counters. I would recommend doubling staff at the theatre entrance doors as well as at the refreshments counters. You’ll double your revenue on refreshments this way and have happier patrons. I felt bad for the staff. They were under a lot of pressure! The macarons were the best I’ve ever had!! Unfortunately I won’t be back soon. 😢

  • A magical experience

by Mags on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

It was truly a magical performance : from the amazing costumes, the spectacular settings, the flawless dancers to the thrill of live orchestra music it was a delight for the senses. I was delighted to bring back my teenaged daughter to this fantastic show. We were not disappointed!

My 9 year old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this magical performance.

  • Overall good

It was so nice to be back with the Alberta Ballet for the Nutcraxker. It is a Christmas tradition with my daughters and we so missed it being gone in 2020. There were some changes to the show, most notably the absence of the Chinese and Arabian dance which we were very sad about as the Arabian is our favourite. Overall, it was well done and so nice to be able to enjoy this annual holiday classic again. Beautifully done Alberta Ballet, and we hope next year to see the show back in its full glory.

I loved the production but feel marginalized by Ticketmaster as all I could do was download my ticket to my mobile which took ages to figure out. Feel badly for those who do not have cell phones. Perhaps an option to print tickets would be visibly available. Thanks

  • The Nutcracker

by Dancing queen on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful performance-the dancing, costumes, music, the venue-all were wonderful. Room for improvement-announce time to performance both prior to start of show & especially at intermission-people we’re getting caught not in their seats

  • Fabulous!

by Susan on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The entire performance from the dancing, the Calgary Philharmonic orchestral, the costumes, and the scenery backgrounds were amazing and beautiful. It made me immediately feel in the Christmas spirit. The dancers are talented enough to perform anywhere in the world.

  • Nutcracker ballet

by TS on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

A magically entertaining afternoon. Always love the ballet, this one was especially special given it was the first one we could attend, in a long time. Most people respected the social Covid protocols. We are looking for too more performances to attend in the future.

  • Family tradition for over 50 years

  • Disappointing

by Trace on 2021-12-20Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

The choreography was bad especially during the first act. This is the third Nutcarcker I have attended and actually fell asleep in the first act, it was that boring. It felt like I was watching some amateur dance show. The second act was much better. At least that could be considered ballet.

  • Beautiful dancing, shame about the "cancel culture."

by Lesley on 2021-12-20Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

I always enjoy going to see The Nutcracker every year with my daughter. This year we splurged and got two seats in the second row. The dancing was spectacular but I was extremely disappointed the Alberta Ballet chose to omit Arabian and Chinese dance, as apparently as I was told, "they didn't age well. *, in other words; like so many other significant and at one time, thought to be timeless e works of art, someone decided that these particular numbers were not culturally sensitive or depicted the particular culture in a stereotypical fashion. Seriously? Is nothing sacred anymore? Now we need to butcher the arts so that we don't offend some snowflake? I feel it is an insult to Tchaikovsky himself by excluding these classic and "should be" timeless numbers. I was very disappointed, as the Arabian dance in particular was always my favourite. I think it is a very sad time in our country's history, when we start dismantling a work of art like this, in order to accommodate some ridiculous notion. At the very least, the ballet company could have adopted the costumes, or whatever they felt was necessary to keep everybody happy, but in my opinion it was a downright shame. It made me question if I will even want to attend the Nutcracker ballet again.

At least the 30th time I have watched a live performance of The Nutcracker, and possibly the most disappointing. Perhaps it’s time to reimagine the interpretation, sets and costuming? And why were several of the dances left out?

  • Seem less and great

by Dave on 2021-12-20Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Vaccination checks were fast, everyone was friendly, it was nice to be back.

  • Great show, poor organization

by Chris on 2021-12-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

We arrived 30 mins early and still barely made it into our seats on time with the show starting late. Line up parking payment, line up for vaccine QR code, line up to get in. Did not bother with drinks or food, another massive line for that. Very poorly organized.

  • Expectations

by Sandra on 2021-12-17Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

I expected this year's show to be very good because the performers were unable to dance The Nutcracker last year because of COVID and I suspect they live to be on stage presenting their craft. I was not disappointed; every year my daughter and I "critique" the show afterward and in 2021 agree that the entire performance was fresh and new; but the absolute standout performances were the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier! They were a delight and we could watch it over and over again! Thank you Alberta Ballet.

  • A little disappointing this year

I missed some of the dances. Especially the arabian dance. Past years have been much better. I still love it though, and will continue going as often as i can. Loved the big nutcrackers and all the decor/ thrones etc in thr concourse
