  • Expected more

I absolutely love Alberta Ballet, as well as The Nutcracker, but found this underwhelming. The set was amazing, as well as the music, but found the choreography lacked the thrill and “wow factor” that I usually get from AB. I think the dancers, particularly the men, weren’t given much opportunity to show their strength. The costumes were bland and nearly everyone wore white, it seemed. I don’t think the revamping of this performance was successful.

  • Nutcracker beautifully danced, lacking family charm.

by Chixdiggit74 on 2021-12-28Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

I have been going to the Nutcracker since I was little, I danced in it 2 years in a row when I was 14/15 years old. This production of Nutcracker was well performed and was very beautiful- from the set to the costumes, but it lacked the old family charm of years past, I found there were rare comedic moments. I was disappointed to see that the Arabian number was not to appear this year. And numbers like Mother Ginger and her oversized skirt is no longer in the ballet, this provided much entertainment for the audience. This production almost had me yawning, and I think small changes would make it more interesting and enjoyable to watch!

  • Great performance

The performance itself was amazing. The dancers and orchestra are all so talented. Parking was easy with the parkade on site, but make sure you plan ahead and arrive early! We were set to arrive 30 minutes early and just barely arrived in our seats in time, due to the back up in traffic. My only suggestion would be that they invest in an actual bartender. The man we had was very nice, but he did not know what different alcohols were. We ordered a whisky and coke and he had to analyze every bottle to determine which one was whisky. We had 20 minutes for intermission and barely made it back for curtain because he took 5 minutes to make each drink.

  • time for a rework or a new production

by Kelly on 2021-12-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

The duet with the Sugarplum Fairy and her partner was the highlight, but the Sugarplum Fairy's solo was lacking. The second act was really short because the Chinese and the Arabian dance were taken out. This was to deal with the cultural appropriation of those dances, however they weren't replaced by anything. If this production is going to remove pieces then they need to add in other pieces like the French dance or Mother Ginger, or maybe it's time for a new production that takes cultural appropriation into account from the beginning.

We went to the nutcracker in 2019 and it was beautiful, entertaining and magical. This year really fell short. The first half was boring and hard to follow the storyline the second half was better but again fell short with the removal of parts of the story. This impacts the integrity of the production. History can always be used as a tool for understanding and knowledge but should not be just removed..

We are Ballet supporters, however, lots of little kids at this ballet (under the age of 5), and many of whom may have been too young for this setting. It was very distracting having a three year old sitting upside down in their chair the entire performance with legs flying around our sight line. (We were the first three rows). Probably wouldn't go to the nutcracker again for this reason. I think it is perhaps more for families and small kids? The price point isn’t fitting for the setting- and if this is something that is accessible to you, great, but it was a special treat for us and was kind of spoiled. The dancers and orchestra were fantastic, the staff were great, everything was beautiful.

  • Unforgettable evening!

by ErinWin on 2021-12-24Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter and I had the most magnificent, magical time at The Nutcracker. It was the first time attending for us both, and we were not disappointed. The pre-performance atmosphere was delightful, from the complementary pictures to the stilt-walkers to the lovely seating areas for pictures. The show itself was incredible and unforgettable. Kudos to everyone involved from the dancers to the orchestra to everyone behind the scenes for the splendid sets. We unhesitatingly recommend and look forward to the next opportunity to attend. Bravo!

The dances were excellent… indeed ! But the story telling could have been much much better … ! Also it felt a little too long in duration.

  • Love the Nutcracker!

by K-M on 2021-12-23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

This was a magical experience. The dancing was wonderful. The music was exceptional. The story was well told. We had three generations attend and everyone enjoyed this ballet.

  • A most memorable performance

by Lori on 2021-12-22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Thank-you for such a memorable day with my 5 year old granddaughter. We came to see the performance of the Nutcracker at the Saturday afternoon matinee. It was a wonderful experience to see her wonderment at the dancers, the costumes, she especially loved the "real" horses on stage. From the moment we arrived and were able to take pictures with the giant nutcrackers, the photo booth where she met the princess, made the experience all the more enjoyable. I wish that we had been notified that there was a story time being held and we would have arrived even earlier. The costumes and stage sets were extraordinary and I am already looking forward to bringing her again next year and starting a new tradition with my granddaughter

  • Memories

This was a "Grandmother(s)/Granddaughter(s) Date" so was a special experience for that reason alone. However, we all thoroughly enjoyed Alberta Ballet's Nutcracker! I wasn't sure if our granddaughters (aged 6 and 8) would maintain their interest throughout, but they did! The talent, and the costumes, were magnificent.

  • 2021 Nutcracker Performance

by Christine on 2021-12-22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I was quite disappointed that there were some dances missing this year! The Arabian Dance is one of my favourites because of the athletic choreography that it contains -- it was left out completely. Another one I looked forward to was the Chinese Dance -- it was left out also. Too much time was spent on the "Mouse King" segment. The Sugar Plum Fairy is among the most difficult roles in the ballet canon, although the talented ballerina made it look effortless. Even though all the main dances were very well done, and deserving of praise, all-in-all, I didn't enjoy this year's production as much as I usually do.

  • Magical

by SusanLC on 2021-12-22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

We took our 7 year old granddaughter to the Nutcracker ballet for her first time on Sunday December 19th. She was enthralled with the whole experience and told us it was her best day EVER!!! From start to finish, she enjoyed every aspect of the afternoon. We arrived early enough to participate in story time and the scavenger hunt, so there was never a dull moment. Thank you for making this such a memorable time for her and us.

  • Christmas Spirit

by Karen on 2021-12-22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The Nutcracker never fails to bring on the Christmas spirit and thus years performance was as wonder and beautiful a ballet as ever. The lobby was festive in decorative trees and children dressed in their Christmas dresses with tiaras added to the magic.

  • Disappointing

by Decaley on 2021-12-22Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The nutcracker ballet has been a Christmas tradition in my family since I was a child, and now my daughter comes as well. I have no complaints about the talented dancers, but half of the dances we are accustomed to seeing were gone, and it made the second half very repetitive and somewhat boring. The diversity in this music should be celebrated not shunned. Hoping for a better production next year.

  • It was neither for a very young nor for an older audience.

by Anna on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The first act appeared to be geared towards kids, while the second seemed target more mature audience. As a result, very few were completely satisfy with the show.

  • Great Expectations, Great Performance

by Poppa And Nana on 2021-12-21Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

We have been waiting to see the 'Nutcracker' for months. With the current Covid crisis, any outing is a joyful event. So we had great hopes and expectations for our outing on Dec 18, to attend the Alberta Ballet's annual staging of the Christmas Classic 'The Nutcracker'. We were completely delighted with the experience! The evening was chilly, and the Covid vaccine checks were carefully (and cheerfully) completed, so the wait times at the door were an inconvenience. However, once we inside, the energy and good spirits of the crowd was palpable. The show was a joy to watch. The sets were great, the sound from the orchestra was gorgeous, and the dancers were awesome. We particularly enjoyed the youngsters in the troupe. The evident joy in their performance was just beautiful! We can't wait for the next performance!!
