I loved the ballet, the costumes were gorgeous and the dancers very skilled! I do miss the reindeer though, I don't like the large wolves as much. And I wish they could bring back Mother Ginger, with her large skirt and the children hiding beneath, it used to provide much comedy! Overall satisfied, a nice Christmas treat for the whole family.
The ballet itself was flawless. Excellent as always with no surprises. I adore having the live orchestra as well! This year the Jubilee had a specialty champagne drink for adults and a non-alcoholic equivalent for kids - lovely. The choice of stuffed toys were very limited (King Rat, anyone) I would love to see Sugarplum Fairy doll or more than just the Nutcracker for ornaments. The photos were a ripoff. Not an actual ballerina, $20 for a 3x5 instant photo with no frame or date and TD emblazoned in bright green on the bottom. If TD had sponsored the photos I can see that, but at $20 per pic, I highly doubt it was subsidized. Lastly, I wish the Jubilee did not allow food in the auditorium. Drinks are nice and quiet but listening to crinkling and crunching during the performance was annoying.
This was a great experience. Highly recommended. Costumes, decorations, dances, music were all very good. We’ve seen in Bolshoi theatre and while their level is higher, but not to the existent that you’d see a difference that would impact your experience.
Wonderful performance in 2019! I have seen it for 10-12 years and this year was the best.
We enjoyed every minute of it. We were front row and loved being able to see the orchestra as well.
Always a treat to enjoy the Nutcracker as the start of Christmas season. The set is starting to appear a bit dated. Dancers were awesome as usual
My daughter and I have an annual "Nutcracker" date for about 10 years now and always look forward to seeing the ballet. This is the first year we have been less than wowed by the performance - while returning to the car after, my daughter said "I think the dancers were hung over" Usually, Alberta Ballet is great and brings an enchanting show to the stage so we'll allow this slip and return next year!
This was a great experience through and through. Brought my kids and they loved every minute of it!
A yearly tradition with my family. I adore it more ever year!
Can never go wrong with a classic ballet, this was first time seeing the Nutcracker it was amazing!
It was really good. First time at a ballot so was a little sceptical but overall I really enjoyed it
I've been to see the Alberta Ballet Nutcracker performance twice in 20 years (including the December 7, 2019 matinee performance), and I had hoped this most recent experience would compel me to come more often, especially since I have two daughters who take ballet classes (and jazz, and hip hop). I took my 3 children (ranging in age from 9 to 20) to this December's performance and unfortunately our overall impressions ranged from mildly amused to completely disappointed/bored. The performers did their best, and we appreciate the many, many hours of training they've put in just for this one event. For the most part they did a good job, although there was expectation of amazing grand jetés but we did not see any physical movements that made us go 'wow!'. The scenery was grand enough in scale and set the scenes well, so this part was not a disappointment. And the choreographers presumably did their best trying to patch all the scenes together. However, the sum of the parts put together left me confused and disappointed as I sat there watching a mish mash of scenes that all seemed to run together like a sentence with no punctuation, a phrase with no bolding, italics or highlighting, to use another artistic comparison. Although there is a synopsis booklet that is handed out at the beginning of the play, I did not read it. My thought was that the choreography would effortlessly reveal the plot to me with clarity and the interpretation of this classic story would be presented so that even a 9 year old child could grasp the underlying plot and meaning of each scene. Sad to say this was not the case, as my 9 year old daughter and I were both confused. I was hoping this performance would inspire my daughter to look at her ballet classes at a local dance school with new freshness, but it did not spark joy in her at all, only boredom. After spending over $300 to take my 3 children to this event (and those were practically 'nosebleed' seats), I took consolation in the fact the Jubilee auditorium seats are very comfortable - almost comfortable enough to fall asleep in, which I found myself on the verge of many times thru this forgettable performance. See you at the Alberta Ballet Nutcracker again in 20 years - maybe....
Live music completes the show. Venue decoration was enchanting. Loved the photos in the sleigh although was quite pricey.
Beautifully done, dancing was awesome and it was great to see so many youngsters dancing. Also the orchestra was fantastic.
Beautiful dancers! Beautiful music! Beautiful set!
16 years ago I bought my first Nutcracker tickets to surprise my wife and sisters but only to find out an hour before show time that the performance was in Northern Alberta Jubilee and not Southern Alberta Jubilee! I waited until this year to take my family to this year’s Nutcracker. It did not disappoint us as my daughter who is 11 cheered loudly the entire time during the performance. I really wish I can take them for another show.
We were all transported to a magical land with all the beautiful dancers, music and sets. A wonderful Christmas time to experience with family.
Fantastic performance and stunning costumes!! Was a little put off by the hooting, hollering, and whistling at the end!! Made me think I was at a rock concert!!! Otherwise, stellar performance
