Canada's Ballet Jorgen's take on The Nutcracker A Canadian Tradition is a terrific presentation if you're okay with a little deviation from the traditional story. The fact that this story takes Klara on a dreamscape through a northern forest, complete with beavers, bears and Mounties, is wonderfully Canadian, with sets based on Bisset, Ontario, north of Algonquin Park, and backdrops by the Group of Seven.
We did not receive a program explaining this until intermission, after having explained the more traditional storyline to the kids. There was considerable confusion for all throughout the first act. And some disappointment at missing out on the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies.
That said, the talent and choreography were exemplary, the costuming and setwork magical.
