  • An Average Nutcracker

by FrazzledMom on 2014-12-09Hamilton Place Theatre - HamiltonRating: 4 out of 5

Canada's Ballet Jorgen's take on The Nutcracker A Canadian Tradition is a terrific presentation if you're okay with a little deviation from the traditional story. The fact that this story takes Klara on a dreamscape through a northern forest, complete with beavers, bears and Mounties, is wonderfully Canadian, with sets based on Bisset, Ontario, north of Algonquin Park, and backdrops by the Group of Seven. We did not receive a program explaining this until intermission, after having explained the more traditional storyline to the kids. There was considerable confusion for all throughout the first act. And some disappointment at missing out on the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies. That said, the talent and choreography were exemplary, the costuming and setwork magical.

The performance was beautiful and well choreographed. The dancers did an amazing job portraying the story line. I did miss that Clara fell asleep which threw me off a little however it was a great show.

What a beautiful ballet. From the stunning sets to the costumes, the orchestra and the lovely ballerinas, this ballet met or exceeded all expectations. Such a treat for the holidays. A holiday tradition for sure.

Toronto International Ballet Theatre's Nutcracker was a splendid event with beautiful dancing, marvelous guest dancers & magical sets. This has become a Christmas tradition for us. Madame Stepanova has put on another wonderful production with great care & artistic brilliance. It makes our season bright! A definite 'must see' !

First time ever seeing the Nutcracker (or any major ballet performance) and I was blown away by the quality of the performances from the dancers both young and old. It is a great production and will be a family Christmas tradition of mine for years to come.

  • Beautiful production of the nutcracker!!

by Starfrye on 2013-12-23Main Stage Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen many ballets and MANY different productions of the Nutcracker, this was by far the BEST!!! The version that was done was absolutely beautiful!! The costumes were stunning! And the dancers were stunning...I was in awe, I would definitely see it again.!

  • Great show but misleading.

by Bubbanaor on 2013-12-10Hamilton Place Theatre - HamiltonRating: 3 out of 5

First off yes, it was a great show to see at Christmas. What I had expected to be the 'Nutcracker' was in fact a watered down children's production of a Canadian interpretation of the Nutcracker! I actually heard a woman in front and to the left of us state out loud that she hadn't realised that this wasn't the actual 'Nutcracker'. The title states THE NUTCRACKER a canadian tradition, which sounds like a description of the show being a solid part of our holiday tradition. I had no idea that this would be performed by local schoolkids! All in all the show was very entertaining. The first act was unexpectedly full of interpretive dance which is fine......if that's what you paid to see. I paid to see the ballet and this was really only the last 50 minutes of the show. All in all I might see it again, but at $208 for a pair of tickets I think it was overpriced by $40/ticket. I hope the producers clarify next time that this is NOT a true presentation of the Nutcracker but something more akin to a fun youthful remake with a Canadian twist.

They removed ALL the Christmas elements from the storyline! The Canadian 'twist' was stereotypical and borderline offensive with French trappers, dancing beavers and mounties and Group of Seven paintings. It felt like I was time warped back into a 1960's episode of The Forest Rangers.

  • Nutctracker- Jorgen version

by leight on 2013-12-09Hamilton Place Theatre - HamiltonRating: 2 out of 5

Swayed too much from the traditional Nutcracker. Therefore, it was hard to follow. Beautiful costumes and dancing- just not what I expected.

  • No live orchestra.

by Marshal on 2013-12-09Hamilton Place Theatre - HamiltonRating: 2 out of 5

I just assumed there would be an orchestra, not a recording. Although the ticket price was not terribly high and there was no indication in the advertising that there would be an orchestra, I was HUGELY disappointed to see no pit and crestfallen when asked to rise and sing O Canada to a recording. Great reimagining of the Nutcracker story, fresh, fun choreography, lovely costumes and scenic design, well thought out and executed. All to a recording. A good, well amplified recording. But a recording? So dissapointed.

Costumes were disappointing and it was not a spectacular production

  • The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition...Loved it!!!

by SickOfYou on 2013-12-09Hamilton Place Theatre - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

This was the second time my daughter and I have seen this version, being The Canadian Tradition, and we absolutely loved it. I think it is much more interesting for children having most of the parts played by animals and birds instead of the traditional soldiers and ballerinas. The dance troupe is truly talented and the venue, Hamilton Place, is a perfect size. Hope they have this version next year.

  • Terrible.

    by Notgoingbackever9 on 2013-12-09Hamilton Place Theatre - HamiltonRating: 1 out of 5

Lots of dancing children and poor poor recorded music playing over an old crappy speaker.

  • Absolutely magical!

Mesmerizing from beginning to end. Beautiful performances from the youngest children to the celebrated professionals. Bravo Goh Ballet!

  • Nutcracker

by Fantine on 2012-12-26Main Stage Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

We were disappointed at the music. It was not powerful. We could not feel it. The ballet shoes made noise on stage which took away from the performance. The sets were amateur and the choreography very simple. Did not get the feeling of the Nutcracker. It was like a recital.
