THE PROCLAIMERS IN CONCERT:

Celtic rock duo The Proclaimers has been charming audiences around the world with their sunny Scottish accents and jangly pop tunes for the past three decades. Stateside fans first caught wind of twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid when their song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" reached No. 3 in the US after appearing in the hit 1993 film Benny & Joon, and they've had a devoted following ever since thanks to their unique Scottish rock sound and rousing live shows. In concert the brothers are all smiles and upbeat energy, leading fans through sing-alongs of favorites like "Sunshine on Leith" and "I'm on My Way" while their backing band kicks out a pub-ready brew of organ, fiddle, and drums. But the highlight of every show is the anthemic and celebratory "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", one of the most insanely fun songs ever written and a serious party starter no matter the venue.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Leith, Scotland-born Craig and Charlie Reid cut their teeth playing in punk bands in high school before forming The Proclaimers in 1983. They got a boost a few years later when a fan sent their demo to British indie rock group The Housemartins, who were so impressed that they invited the brothers on their 1986 UK tour. The exposure set the stage for The Proclaimers 1987 debut album This Is the Story, which went gold thanks to Top 3 single "Letter from America". Their 1988 sophomore album Sunshine on Leith was an even bigger success, cracking the Top 10 in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand on the strength of ubiquitous 1988 mega-hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)". The song initially failed to chart in America, but that wasn't the final word—it became a Top 3 hit in the US five years later when it was featured on the soundtrack of the Jonny Depp-starring feature film Benny & Joon. Since then The Proclaimers have toured extensively while maintaining a steady output, including a 2007 comedy version of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" which was recorded for charity and ended up topping the UK Singles Chart.

  • Proclaimers

Band were good as expected, venue is pretty good ,lots of leg room and easy access in and out after the concert. The time gap between the opening act and the Band was way too long

  • Poor Old Proclaimers

by Jowi on 2018-09-26The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

I've seen a few "legacy" acts in recent years. Some are clearly just doing it for the money, some are hoping to revive past glory and others remain vital artists. Not really sure where the Proclaimers land on this spectrum - definitely not at the Vital Artists end of things.. For a group that has had such an interesting place in the culture starting in the '80's, you'd think they'd have some perspective or stories to share. But all in all they were pretty tight lipped. They didn't even really engage with each other - let alone the audience - and the brothers stood well apart on stage. As they rolled through the repertoire you realized they've written a handful of really fine songs and a bunch of workaday pub rock. I was so bored that we actually left before the inevitable showstopper of "500 Miles", though we were glad to have stuck around for "Sunshine on Leith".

  • The Proclaimers and Siobhan Wilson were amazing!

by KenD1976 on 2018-09-26The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I thoroughly recommend seeing both of these musical acts. Siobhan for her beautiful voice and lovely music, and The Proclaimers for their many years entertaining fans with great tunes performed extremely well. Neither missed a beat or went off key the whole night. Stellar environment and even better night out!

  • Greatly enjoyed

They played none stop for 1:15 minutes then came back for a three song encore. Great to see the crowd was there to see and hear them play. They still can sing.

  • Horrible sound

by Seaofsorrow on 2018-09-24FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - HamiltonRating: 2 out of 5

Very disappointed with the sound quality this night. The house PA was set up way too loud to be enjoyable. And I have bad ears! Totally wasted First row balcony seats :(

  • The Proclaimers were incredible!!

I had a great seat, it was the perfect venue for their music. We could sit and listen to their incredible harmonies but still get up and dance for their more upbeat songs.

  • Proclaimers well worth going to.

Thought the concert was great, had super seats and the band were very entertaining.

  • Wish it was 1989 again

Sunshine on Leith is my all time favourite album and as a proud Scot, I absolutely love the Proclaimers. I saw them play in Toronto in 1989 and had the time of my life, and I understand that I'm older now, as were most of us at the concert, but I felt that the band fell a bit flat this time. They seemed to just be going through the motions and didn't put a lot of passion into the songs; there was definitely a lack of the energy that usually surrounds a concert. I was hoping to relive the glory days of Sunshine on Leith, but they only played a few songs from that album, and seemed to play a lot of new songs that I (nor anyone else, it seemed) didn't recognize. The last 4-5 songs were great and got the crowd going, and I left on a positive note, but my overall feeling was one of mild disappointment. I'd have much rather stood/danced than have been crowded into a seating section too, and the acoustics weren't great in the hall; the sound seemed to reverberate and was sharp and loud at times, and I saw some people around me covering their ears.

  • Disappointed - Should've gone for a 500 mile walk!

Have been a fan of this group since the '80's. The show was a great disappointment in a venue where we have enjoyed many other similar events over the years. Have to say, of all the concerts we have attended (and there have been many in the past fifty years!) this was the absolute worst. The volume amped. on the instrumentals absolutely suppressed the vocals - a new sound engineer would be a big plus - this event was so wrong in this respect it became torturous. The main act - The Proclaimers - did not appear for an hour after the start of the concert - there was a prelude act of a younger, talented Scottish lass but again the instrument volume killed her vocals. Her act lasted a half-hour and was followed by the stage crew/roadies monkeying around on the stage for another half hour - setting up instruments which were already set-up or should have been - they were all on stage already and should have been ready to go. This entertainment fiasco was followed by the advent of The Proclaimers and the noise that was the excess volume of their instrumentals. I have seen better amateur band performances in high school! Disappointed in the extreme and would not pay to go see this group again!
