    Hip is always solid

by Rich on 2009-07-13Massey Hall - Toronto

I have watched the Hip live over 25 times and they never disappoint. Their live performances are always a little edgier then the CD versions. I found that at this concert Gord took a little more time to connect with the crowd with an explanation of the song, what it meant or who or where it was written. This is a first for any show I have been at. Also Mr. Baker (I call him Mr. because he deserves the respect for how amazing a guitarist he is).....Mr. Baker's sound on this album and live performance is edgier/harder than in previous times. The solo on Queens of the Furrow rock!

    Hip, Hip, Hooray!

by JohnJoe on 2009-07-13Massey Hall - Toronto

What a treat, seeing The Tragically Hip in such an intimate location, although Massey Hall could well do with a renovation as seating is much too cramped. The band were fierce, the setlist was nearly perfect and the whole evening was truly memorable. Long live Das Hip!

The Hip Rock at Massey Hall

by Flipout on 2009-07-13Massey Hall - Toronto

Without a doubt, the BEST Hip show I have ever seen. And it was all about the intimate natyre of the venue. It was like they were playing in your basement but with much better acoustics. Took my oldest son with me who had never been to Mssey Hall and was blown away. Gord Downey is such a great entertainer and the band is so tight. Put that together with their huge epitoir of hits and you've got a killer combination. Loved every second of the show.

    Long Live Das Hip

by OneHipCanuck on 2009-07-13Massey Hall - Toronto

Massey Hall was the perfect venue for this tour. Gord's voice filled the room and has never been better. To anybody who has a chance to see their favourite band in a small venue like this, don't hesitate. This was my 5th concert and the best so far. They played Opiated (from Up To Here) which they have only played at this show on this tour, and only 2 other times in the past 10 years. Couldn't have asked for a better night.

    Would've been awesome...if I could see anything!

by HeyPally on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

For such a small, intimate venue as Massey Hall is, you'd think there wouldn't be a bad seat in the house. Wrong. There are several. Do not, under any circumstances, purchase tickets anywhere near the sides of the stage. Don't even think about it. If these are the last seats available, forget it. Just don't do it. The huge speakers will totally block your view. We couldn't see more than 10% of the stage. Luckily it was an area where Gord spent about 1/2 the concert. So we at the very least got to see his legs and feet for 1/2 the show. And these were presale seats! Despite that, The Hip put on an awesome show. Plain and simple. Gord is awesome. The sound was great. And we got to see special guest Alex Lifeson perform in the last set. I guess I just need to go see them again with better seats so I can truly appreciate the experience.

Gordie knows how to put on a show!

by Downie on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

Awesome show, really took a bunch of songs out of the archives. A bunch I've never heard live before, which was great. Really cool stripped down acoustic songs to start the second set. Could have heard a few more of those but still a great show. I wasn't upset that I didn't get one of Gordie's sweaty rags but a cool element.

    The Hip were tired

by hiplover on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

I love the Hip. More of the older tracks mind you weren't high on the priority that night. Downie didn't seem into it. The interaction between band members was minimal. I was a little disappointed.

    Hip Perform Amazing As Always!!!

by Klegger on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

This was my 6th Hip show and it was the best one yet. Gord gets the crowd involved, and you can see his passion on stage. You can see that the Band really appreciate their fans while playing on stage. I'm looking forward to watching many more live shows in the future. Hip Hip Hip Hip Hip Hip Hip !!!!!!

    Great musicians, great Canadiana

by Bodine on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

The Hip can still put on a great show. This concert was very good, but could have been even better, had the Hip played more upbeat songs such as "Love is a First" (off their new album). The concert was dominated by too many mellow numbers. I've seen 3 concerts on this tour (2 in Toronto, and 1 in Vancouver). All were good, but could have been great, had they included only 2 or 3 more rocking tracks such as Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Fully Completely, Little Bones, Small Town Bringdown, When the Weight Comes Down (none of these songs were played in the 3 shows I attended). As it was, their more mellow set list has taken The Hip from a "rockin' night out with the boys' band to a 'night out with the girlfriend' band. I can only hope they pick up the pace a bit for the fall portion of this tour, as I have tickets for two more shows.

Great show by the hometown boys!

by wesleymutt on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

This was there second of six shows and it was pretty great. The Hip played a mix of songs from their new album, which where suprisingly very good, and many of their old hits. The three song acoustic set to start off the second set was a great addition, as was their encoure. Gord Downie was up to his usual antics, with entertaining and at times bizarre gyrations, not to mention his usual peculair poetic banter with the audience. Their musicianship was bang on as was the energy of both the band and crowd. A highly recommended band to see live who did not disappoint!

Once in a Lifeson -a couple songs felt Rushed

by Ventura on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

As an avid hip-goer -that is, as avid a hip-goer as a broke University student can be- I find the show format of this We Are the Same tour refreshing. The intermission is not a regular occurance and the second act's sit-down acoustic start is a fantastic taste of some of what are considered rarities on The Tragically Hip's setlist. I recall Kingston's K-rock centre running dry of beer when The Hip Christened its halls with an inaugural concert, welcoming Dan Aykroyd to the stage for the Encore, harmonica in hand. Massey Hall may have been victim to a similar drought, at the cram-in-another pace of the crowd during the twenty minute intermission, if the historic venue allowed drinks to be brought back to seats. And, like the night they shook K-rock, another rarity, The Tragically Hip welcomed a Canadian Superstar to the stage; Alex Lifeson. The Last Recluse and Little Bones felt a little Rushed, pardon the pun, as the energy of the crowd, mixed with Lifeson's guitar, got me jumping and singing enough to match Gord Downie in a sweating contest.

    Meh

by NotImpressed on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

    - Venue and seating were horrible - pillars blocked the stage, so you couldn't see (for over $100 per ticket, NOT WORTH IT) - Set list not the greatest- the audience spent more time sitting than standing (a result of playing new songs- people wanted to hear the classics, which they did not play, except for Bobcaygeon) - Overall kind of BLAH for this concert. Saw the Hip at the ACC (again, not the greatest venue) but they ROCKED IT at that one!! Don't go to Massey Hall if you want to have an enjoyable concert experience

    The Hip Get BETTER!

by Oaksmaverick on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

Hard to believe such a legendary band could put on a show that was even better than expected, but that's exactly what happened.

Believe The Hip! Best show EVER!

by Troubadour on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

The show at Massey Hall was so good that the four friends who I went with went to Hollywood a couple weeks later to see them at a tiny venue called the Troubadour. It ended up being the best trip of all of our lives, we watched two Hip shows and ended up getting to know their roady Billy who let us meet, Paul, Robbie, and Johnny. It was awesome!

    That night in Toronto.....

    by ashley55 on 2009-07-12Massey Hall - Toronto

This was the 13th time I saw the hip and it was amazing as always. They had a good mix of old and new songs which was really good. Gord was his crazy self and put on an awesome show. It's a blast watching him rock out and even though I already saw the show in Toronto I am going to Ottawa to see it again in September because I just can't get enough.
