TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS IN CONCERT:

As pioneers of heartland rock in the late-'70s, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers championed a no-frills, guitar-driven sound that set them apart from the increasingly technology-oriented approach of much of the era's pop music. Today Tom Petty & Co. are as relatable as ever, treating fans to their classic songs about working class issues and everyday American life with a passion and flair that belie their years. Whether Petty is dancing across the stage with a pair of maracas or lending his iconic voice to hits like "American Girl" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," he and the band never fail to electrify at their live shows, and their 2014 tour dates with special guest Steve Winwood will be no different.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After playing in several other Gainesville, FL bands in the early-'70s, Tom Petty formed the Heartbreakers in 1976. The band's self-titled debut initially failed to gain traction in the US, but American audiences eventually caught wind of its popularity in the UK, leading to the 1978 re-release of early single "Breakdown" to a Top 40 spot. In 1979 the band scored their true US breakthrough with the hits "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That," That", the latter becoming their first Top 10 hit. A series of successful albums followed in the '80s, earning the band an impressive string of hits as well as a supporting slot on Bob Dylan's '86/87 True Confessions world tour. Their chart run continued in the '90s with No. 1's like "Learning to Fly" and "You Don't Know How It Feels", which earned Petty a Grammy in 1996 for Best Rock Vocal Performance. Nearly four decades after their debut, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will continue to treat fans to their exceptional live show on their latest tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"A great walk down memory lane. The Heartbreakers played like they were all still 30 years old. Tom Petty can really belt those songs out. Rock on!"

"The show was awesome. Tom Petty was amazing and the Heartbreakers rocked! I would love to see the whole show again!"

"The show was excellent with a great mix of old, new, and some obscure/rarely heard tracks. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers never disappoint."

Great show although I thought it got a little slow when they were doing some of the new songs. Maybe I was just tired as it was a long day and getting late :)

    Tom Petty does it again

by anteekhawg on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Tom Petty put on one pretty amazing concert on the 8th in Vancouver. I really enjoyed it and my only complaint was I didn't hear him perform the songs I really liked but he did the one my wife really loved Free Fallin which is on her video of her skydiving on her 55th birthday. Pretty amazing concert and highly recommend anyone thinking of going to one of his concerts to get a ticket and just have fun at it.

Petty - still cool after all these years!

by Anniecanfly on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Great concert! Crowd was so enthusiastic and appreciative and sang along to alot of songs they knew as well as clapped their hands off for songs they didn't know from the new album.. Petty kept smiling and talking to the crowd and we knew he was happy to be there. I'd always wanted to see this band and am glad I didn't miss out this time. Petty and the Heartbreakers were on for at least an hour and a half. Definitely a good bang for your buck. Lots of smoke in the air and happy people. Not to be missed when they come to a city near you.

    Sing-a-long

by GuytonGal on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Tom Petty was great but the sing-a-long, particulary in our section was tiring. I came to hear Tom & the Heartbreakers not the audience. Some singing along is fun but this over overkill and took a lot from our pleasure. Also, I have one suggestion for Tom. If you want to introduce your new album, don' t play the songs back to back. I found my legs getting antsy because I was a bit bored listening to unfamiliar music one after the other. Mix it up with the old stuff and it would be appreciated (and paid attention to) much more. Once through that, it was great music again. I say that I wouldn't recommend this to my friends because living on Vancouver Island, we have the added cost of ferries, hotel, etc. I didn't come home feeling like I got my money's worth. Well maybe I did. Joe Cocker was great to see live and I'm still marvelling at how much I enjoyed that. I love Tom Petty but I won't go to see him live again. I totally enjoyed Joe Cocker's performance. It was over and beyond what one can expect from a "back-up" performer. I can't recall when the back-up band was called back for an encore. My only disappointment was that it wasn't shown on the big screen so we didn't see his face up close. I stopped bringing my binoculars because of the big screens. I wished I had them for Joe Cocker.

    Petty wont back down

by Crippler on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

This was the first time I had seen Tom Petty live in concert, and me being a fan for 30 years I was excited about finally seeing Petty and they did not dissapoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, the sound was crystal clear. The band was on the same page, and to top it all off I only purchased my ticket a week before the show, my seat was Row 7 on the floor dead center! Thanks Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!

    The walls came tumblin' down

by Todzilla on 2010-06-09General Motors Place - Vancouver

Starting with the opening act, Joe Cocker, to the final song of Tom petty, it was a memorable event. Joe Cocker performed a solid, enjoyable set full of timeless hits that got the crowd warmed up for the headliner. From the opening song to the encore, Tom Petty provided the energy and everyone in the crowd became a part of the show, singing boisterously to all his hits. Everyone, including the band, was feeling festive and the environment was electric proving that Tom petty can slay 'em live with the best of them. Definitely, one of the best shows I've been a part of and on par with Springsteen for crowd participation and noise. Three thumbs up!

He played all the songs that I grew up on and a bunch off his new album. It was magic. A simple stage... its was just about the music.
