About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

After years of YouTube finally getting to see him live was fantastic. He did 2 sets. First was 45 minutes the second was an hour. Such a talent on guitar and so entertaining live. He is a great character to see live. I hope to catch another show.

  • The Absolute Best! but....

April 2nd Tommy Concert in Vancouver was stunning as usual. BUT...We couldn't believe the awful, too loud bass that blasted us out of our seats right from the beginning. We had friends sitting on the other side of the theater and their experience was the same. We kept thinking someone would fix it but it persisted throughout, except for the softer pieces like Secret Love. Such a senior crowd too - I looked below from my Row K seats and saw a sea of people adjusting their hearing aids! :-) Tommy might have adjusted part way through but, just sayin', did they miss the sound check?

  • Fantastic evening!

My wife and I attended the Tommy Emmanuel show and had a fantastic evening! Tommy's playing was amazing, even better than we thought it would be!! Tommy's playing is so good we were speechless at times. His playing is so fast, fluid and while he plays you can see that he is so into and loves what he does. Also, when he played and did his drumming with the mike stand it was amazing! When he comes again, my wife and I will not miss it! Highly recommend if you have a chance to see his show!

This was a master class in playing and showmanship! There were 3 young teens sitting in front of me, all 3 had long hair and looked like they played in a band. one had an Iron Maiden vest. I thought to my self here we go they will be bored and texting to their friends all night. they did not even twitch during the show ;-)

  • Great show

Tommy is an awesome guitarist & entertainer. He’s been committed to his calling for decades. At 70 (almost) years old he still brings great energy to his performances. That speaks volumes about the type of person he is. Thanks for the music, Tommy!

  • The whole evening was great!

by Donna G on 2025-03-31Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

The event was very good from beginning to end- from convenient parking, welcoming helpful staff, to the iconic venue. And of course, Tommy Emanuel was AMAZING!!! Never fails to impress. It was my husband’s birth day and our children accompanied us (who are 30 years younger) and even they enjoyed Tommy’s performance!!!

  • The One & Only Tommy Emmanuel

    by Guitar-Man 77 on 2025-03-31Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Our evening with Tommy Emmanuel was special. It’s amazing how he can provide such beautiful music and all by himself. My husband wanted to see him so much and took me (his wife), daughter and sister to join him. In my husband’s view Tommy is the best (acoustic) guitar entertainer in the world. Tommy has played all over the world and with so many accomplished players of all genres. If he comes back to Winnipeg, we’ll be there, only this time we’ll include the VIP package. The Burton Cummins Venue was a comfortable location.
