Toronto FC History

Toronto FC played their first season in 2007 and became a perennial MLS Cup playoff contender after adding Italian soccer star Sebastian Giovinco in 2015. In his first year with the team, Giovinco became the first Toronto FC player to win MLS' Golden Boot, MVP and Newcomer of the Year awards, en route to the team's first-ever playoff berth. The team reached further success the following year by reaching the MLS Cup, then won the championship in 2017. That victory, coupled with their winning of the Canadian Championship and Supporters' Shield matches earlier in the year, made Toronto FC the first team in Major League Soccer history to complete the rare feat known as the domestic treble.

Toronto FC have been most dominant in the annual Canadian Championship, in which the club has taken home the Voyageurs Cup eight times, including in 2020. Individual player accolades include Rookie of the Year for midfielder Maurice Edu in 2007 and Most Valuable Player for attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo in 2020.

Toronto FC at BMO Field

Toronto FC is the city's first Major League Soccer team and the first Canadian team in the league. When the team's home stadium at BMO Field opened in 2007, it was already the largest soccer-specific stadium in Canada. The venue has since expanded to accommodate over 30,000 fans in its soccer configuration. The Eastern Conference team's most vocal and visible supporters club, the Red Patch Boys, started rallying online back in 2006 before the team had even played its first match.

  • TFC always a safe bet

by TigerTheLion on 2009-07-30BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

If you've never been to a TFC game at BMO...or anywhere else for that matter, you NEED to go. Despite the loss it was as entertaining as ever. I've been to numerous games and have not once been disappointed. The atmosphere is amazing and the product on the field is great.

  • We're still in it!

    by tfcfan77 on 2009-07-30BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Leg one of the Champions League was disappointing. FC could not break down a USL defense and were puzzling in the final third. The officiating was disappointing and now the job becomes even tougher with leg 2 in Puerto Rico BUT we did it in Montreal, we can do it in San Juan.

  • Thank you Guest Services @ BMO

My son how has an allergy to nuts came to the game with me the first half every thing was ok. Then people seated beside us started to eat nuts we had to leave the area. I asked if they can move us somewhere safe he said yes and put us at the top of the south end 115. I and my son thank you.

  • Good facilty, incredible fanbase, average football

by torontoblue on 2009-07-30BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Worth a trip for any Toronto visitors. Well organised football stadium with good facilities. More atmosphere than my last football game Birmingham v Liverpool.. Toronto FC fans where amazing but shame about the result and finishing of the forwards as Toronto deserved at least a draw.

  • Game night Experience

by FCFever on 2009-07-30BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I have to say that this was my first TFC game ever! I've been to the BMO field, scene Team Canada play. But to experience an event like last night was extraordinary. The game itself was action all the way, watching TFC struggle in the last 30min in the first half was rough. As the second half started, TFC had dominated having control, but still struggled to get the ball in the net. There had been some very close calls, but the ref had obvious no care on what the crowed thought and in my opinion was calling some unfair calls towards TFC. Even though we lost 1-0 It was the experience in being part of the TFC fan base outside the stadium and heading to the streets to our cars where we continue to chat T-F-C. An experience like this makes one proud to be part of this great city Toronto!

  • How many volts???

by Overijse on 2009-07-30BMO Field - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

How many volts will it take to put some life into TFC. Last night, TFC clearly did not take the Puerto Rico Islanders seriously. TFC played without passion and demonstrated little interest in trying to win. Last week, in the "friendly" against Independiente of Buenos AIres, it was the same. I have watched TFC for more than three hours on their home field the past two games and the team has scored ZERO goals. While the good folks at BMO Field keep announced 20,000-plus as attendance, which I am sure is based on the number of tickets sold, empty seats indicate lots of people are voiting with feet and staying away. When do we get to see a TFC team that cares about excellence????

  • Lame Game

by Mostazita on 2009-07-27BMO Field - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

The game was a joke , it really sucked as none of the teams put their best players on the field .They just played a simple friendly game .None of the players played hard ,seems like everbody was looking to save their legs for the next game.A total disrespect for the fans like my friends and I who drove 200 km to see the event . It was a joke .

  • This gam

by benzinho on 2009-07-25BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

River plate did not field there first team because they were saving them for the game on the weekend against Everton. This was unfortunate for me as this was the team I came to see as I am a river Supporter Toronto was excellent and had the better team on the field but could not put any chances away. River's youngsters showed some flashes of brilliance but were very sloppy. the atmosphere at the stadium was great

  • Game was just so, so...

by Baps on 2009-07-24BMO Field - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The game was just so - so...kind of boring Some great opportunities not capitalized by the TFC but, all-in-all, it was a well played game. Sad to see a loss based on penalty kicks....oh Danny Dichio - how could you miss!

  • Somewhat entertaining but not value for money

by Cavebear on 2009-07-24BMO Field - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Went to see this game with two of my brothers. Having paid $110 per ticket for seats in row 23 (the very last row) of the 200 level (the balcony), we were counting on TFC and River to provide an extraordinary game. The first half was nothing special and in fact league games against Chicago and Columbus are more intense. For the second half, we moved down to the third row where we were able to encourage young Gabe Gala, who rarely plays but was giving a good effort last night. The ref was disinclined to stop the flagrant grabbing and pushing by the River team. My brother, who has lived in Argentina, was embarrassed by how much they were cheating. The shootout turned out to be quite the spectacle, with most players kicking high and hard, and missing. At least Dichio won't feel so bad for being saved; both teams should be ashamed of their penalty taking. Overall, the players, the ref, and the fan involvement were merely average. Next year, I wouldn't buy the same tickets to this 'Carlsberg Cup' event unless they were priced much more reasonably. $40 seems about right for what we saw.

  • 3 Pens over the net

    by WKOF77 on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The game was good considering there weren't any goals scored. They had their chances but couldn't get it in. In the Penalty shootout TFC put 3 of 6 over the net and lost the cup final. Not worth the $110 I paid.

  • great game

  • Slow Game...shootout was best part!

by Scrgrl on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The game started off slow and didn't really go anywhere from there. No excitement...the rain made it a bit more exciting, I guess.

  • TFC V. River Plate: The Game that Wasn't

by ArsenalFan on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

OK, maybe I am used to the action packed EPL, but come on. There was nothing redeeming about this game except #7 for River Plate, who lit up the field with every touch of the ball. TFC looked lackluster and unfocussed. There was very little enthusiasm for the task at hand. In the end it was decided by penalty kicks, most of which sailed over the crossbar. Of course, BMO Field fans are the most fun to watch. We sat amidst a group of Argentine fans who were so much fun they had me cheering for River Plate. And BMO field is a wonderful place to watch a match. There are no bad seats and a good selection of beer available. I would highly recommend that everyone take in the atmosphere at least once, whether you are a football fan or just curious as to why this place is packed all the time.

  • None of them

by Miguel on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

With great expectation we went with my son to BMO Field yesterday. The place is really enjoyable, the atmosphere family-friendly. The game was just mediocre. TFC tried hard, but its players doesn't seem to connect very well, specially in the attack line. They had more opportunities than the opponents. River Plate showed some individual skills, nice and sharp moves, and a great goalkeeper. However, again, there was no team sense in the attack. I still don't understand how professional players are so bad during penalty shots. I chose none of them in terms of sport playing. But we had a good time anyways.

  • Finally got TFC Tics!

    by Meg6 on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

After waiting years to get tickets to see the TFC, it was great to finally see them last night, even if it wasn't for one of their regular season games. Despite their loss, it was great to see the crowd cheering and supporting their team. It's nice to go to an energetic sporting event for a Toronto team again!

  • Toronto FC vs. River Plate

    by Striker19 on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing!! Our first FC game and definitely not our last.

  • Totally disapointing

by Menduco on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

I bought 8 tickets for my family because we are River Plate fans, but when the game started the starting line up and all of the best players were sitting on the bench,(ex, Ortega,Gallardo,Buonanotte,Fabiani,Ferrari,Ahumada,Vega,Rosalez,Villagra and a lot more. Some of their best players weren't even sitting on the bench they were on the side watching the game. What the coaches of River Plate did was totally disrespectful to everyone , this game wasn't free and we expected the starting line up with the best players. Thanks
