Toronto FC History

Toronto FC played their first season in 2007 and became a perennial MLS Cup playoff contender after adding Italian soccer star Sebastian Giovinco in 2015. In his first year with the team, Giovinco became the first Toronto FC player to win MLS' Golden Boot, MVP and Newcomer of the Year awards, en route to the team's first-ever playoff berth. The team reached further success the following year by reaching the MLS Cup, then won the championship in 2017. That victory, coupled with their winning of the Canadian Championship and Supporters' Shield matches earlier in the year, made Toronto FC the first team in Major League Soccer history to complete the rare feat known as the domestic treble.

Toronto FC have been most dominant in the annual Canadian Championship, in which the club has taken home the Voyageurs Cup eight times, including in 2020. Individual player accolades include Rookie of the Year for midfielder Maurice Edu in 2007 and Most Valuable Player for attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo in 2020.

Toronto FC at BMO Field

Toronto FC is the city's first Major League Soccer team and the first Canadian team in the league. When the team's home stadium at BMO Field opened in 2007, it was already the largest soccer-specific stadium in Canada. The venue has since expanded to accommodate over 30,000 fans in its soccer configuration. The Eastern Conference team's most vocal and visible supporters club, the Red Patch Boys, started rallying online back in 2006 before the team had even played its first match.

  • Awesome FC

by Sparkyie on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic seats. In one endzone in section 129. Great action at our end in the first half, and still find it unbelieveable TFC didn't score with the chances they had. Had my friend, and my ten year old daughter with me, and both thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Had a delicious hamburger right behind us, just a little costly. All in all would recommend a game to anyone, if you can find tickets. Just wish the shoot out would have been on the goal in our end.

  • Low key affair

by Ramble on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The match started out quite slow. It was apparent the the 2 teams were very unfamiliar with each other and, typical of such fixtures, the first part of the game witnessed a very conservative approach by both teams who were just feeling each other out. However, the latter part of the 1st half, Toronto came to life and began dominating the game, with a couple of excellent scoring opportunities which didn't pan out due to poor finishing. Nevertheless, the remainder of the game was quite entertaining, although the 0-0 score line was dissapointing. River Plate did come on quite strongly towards the latter part of the 2nd half, but couldn't finish due to solid Toronto defending. The penalty shoot out at the end of the game was a nice added touch, which allowed the fans to go home without feeling empty-handed

The game was a lot of fun (and intense) to watch but the fans were the best. Such high energy.

  • Another entertaining game from TFC

by SoccerFans on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Even though it was not a win, TFC again have an entertaining match at home. Only thing that would of made this better would be a win or at least summer weather. =)

  • River Plate and FC!! Such a close game.

by Nikkster on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I was initially worried because we had the 217 section at the very top ( cheap seats) But they were awesome! I don't think there is a bad seat in that entire stadium!! Thanks BMO!

Toronto FC is the best team ... and fan experience in the city...

  • Unacceptable Shoot Out

by RoxyKeeper on 2009-07-23BMO Field - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

when shoot out's take place, the Keeper cannot leave the line until the player has actually touched the ball. Last night the Keeper for Altetico left his line when the TFC player was about 5 ft in front of the ball. It was apparent that the Keeper got warned at the beginning of each ball, but didn't matter as he continued to do it. The official should have given hiim 1 warning and then a red card, insisting that a substitute Keeper who would follow the rules be put in his place. If it were not for the fact that this Keeper came off the line extremely early, several shots would have gone in the net and TFC would have won the cup.

  • Toronto FC Rules!

by redboard on 2009-07-19BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first proffessional soccer game. Toronto FC was great, but the ref wasn't. He gave yellow card to Toronto when it was Huston that kicked a Toronto player. The ref also disallowed a Toronto goal because of a supposed offside. The ref sucked. Otherwise I loved the atmosphere - even for a dry game. My dad said that it is nosier and louder when there is beer flowing. My seat was great too, and I could see everything.

  • TFC Were Awesome!

    by soccermom1980 on 2009-07-19BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The whole family really enjoyed the game. The seats were great, the pre-game events were fantastic. Our nine-year old had a great time showing off his skills! It was a perfect family event!

  • Toronto FC vs. Houston Dynamo July 18/09

by DavidG on 2009-07-19BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

An end result not bad against the leagues top team. De Rosario began the scoring when he buried his shot for his sixth goal, tying Dichio's, who just entered the match on a substitution, in the 36 minute, for an injured Serioux, setting up the play. The Reds put forth seven shots on goal (and 15 overall) but had issues with accuracy. All five of Houston's shots on goal came in the final 31 minutes as they worked hard to break down the TFC defense. The equalizer came in the 75th minute, when Boswell's initial effort, a header, was defended against. He then converted his own rebound and the match was tied. While the draw is a big improvement, it might not do much to hold the Reds' position in the Eastern Conference.

  • No beer? No fear!

by KatKev on 2009-07-19BMO Field - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

My first time at BMO Field. The weather held up although we did have our rain ponchos ready. The yahoos were well in check (at least in our section). Our "obstructed view" was the camera so one corner was not visible except on screen. A slight price discount on the tickets for these seats wouldn't go amiss. The game was okay - not a disappointment, but not startling either. Here's a tip: when you're leaving the event, if you're driving don't bother heading out right away. Park, or drive over to the Ontario Place entrance where you can pick up a soft serve ice cream from the nice guy in the van and wait it out. Not sure I'd go again, but it's not the game -- it's the traffic!

  • Always enjoyable

by TeamMelissa on 2009-07-18BMO Field - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I think we were in the second to last row, but there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Other than awkward cheers from the only singing person in the section, it was great. I always love going to these games and look forward to many more.

  • Amazing night!

by Homelesstom on 2009-07-18BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The atmosphere at BMO field was amazing...much better than any Leaf game I've ever been too. The early goal in the game got the fans riled up and the night continued that way. I will definitely go see another game or two before summer's end.

  • Amazing game! My six year old loved it!

by Pinkster on 2009-07-16BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Good soccer, was great for my six year old soccer fan....wish tickets were easier to get though.

  • ooooooOOOOOOOHHHHHHH TFC!!!

Great game at a great venue. If you've never watched live professional soccer, you don't know what your missing. The atmosphere, the people, the play... all fantastic.

  • TFC vs Red Bulls

by silky on 2009-07-16BMO Field - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Great game! Our first TFC game ever! Wonderful evening, great traditions. Everyone around us was so generous with their knowledge as they recruited us 'newbies' into the action! TFC scored very early in the game, apparently unheard of, and held off Red Bull until the end! Will definitely go back!
