A much loved operetta performed beautifully
by Elizabeth on 2024-11-06Jane Mallett Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5The Student Prince was one of two of my father's favourite musicals. While I have watched the movie often, the last time I saw it as a live performance was just after he died in 1976. Even though we knew how it ended, he and I were always miffed that the prince didn't marry the barmaid, much to my mother's amusement! This performance did justice to Romberg's beautiful songs. The orchestra was wonderful. The sets and costumes were true to the story. The voices of the performers were all lovely. My only criticism is that Brooke Mitchell did not need to be miked as loudly as she was. She is a strong, true soprano with lovely tone that was occasionally distorted by the microphone. Otherwise, I was reminded why I need to support Toronto Operetta Theatre more often. Thank you for the opportunity to see this much loved operetta again.
