About

With a catalog of songs that reaches back 50 years, Van Morrison always delivers a concert that’s impossible to predict  for his many ticket buyers. The iconic Northern Ireland native has, of course, recorded classic albums like Moondance and Astral Weeks, and timeless singles like "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and "Wild Night." But he's released well over 30 albums during the course of his career, building a repertoire that veers from Celtic music to folk to blues to covers of standards. His focus on any given night could switch on the dime as he follows his muse wherever it takes him. Fans fill seats to see Van Morrison on tour because the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is a master of making his own whatever genre or song he tackles. His unmistakable voice is a reedy and expressive growl, and his delivery --  which is constantly evolving -- conjures elements of jazz, blues and gospel. His latest album, 2012's Born to Sing: No Plan B, marked his first batch of original songs in five years and was hailed by many critics as recalling his much-heralded recordings of the late '60s and early '70s. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.

    Van Morrison

by GG52 on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Van Morrison was amazing. He didn't need to do an encore...he gave 150% throughout the almost 2 solid hours of performing. No chatting with the audience, just great music, song after song. The best performer I have seen in a long time.......well worth the price of admission!

    Van delivers

by zepfan on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Totally what I expected. 93 minutes from the master. Great set list covering his career and a great band to work with and direct. Highlights opening with Northern Muse (Solid Ground) on piano was marvellous I am from County Down where Van now lives so this is a special song. Rough God Goes Riding a definite high point. Just as good as when he was here with Dylan in 98. And the All in the Game > In The Garden segments were brilliant. I know he doesnot talk to the audience and I dont care. He does his thing and that's that. Expensive tickets but totally worth going. Where i was the sound was about the best I've hear in GM Place the vocals rode over the top of the instruments so you could hear every word sung clearly. And thanks to Ms Mavis Staples. A lovely set of mainly gospel tunes sung with passion and faith.

Van Morrison is still the best!

by Branch40 on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

What needs to be said... VM is amazing. He is still on top of his game and is one of the best. His band, him and his work is a "must see live". Simple sets with intense music!

    As Good As It Gets

by ThirdTimeLucky on 2010-08-09Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

It your a Van Morrison fan, Thursdays concert at the Jubilee in Calgary was As Good As it Gets when seeing Van. Settling into my row 4 centre floor seat after kicking back 2 Double Crowns, I knew it was going to be an amazing concert when i saw Van's instruments and mic stand were placed facing the audience. I had seen Van twice before, Chicago and Boston and witnessed the unthinkable, Van playing the entire concert with his back to the audience and never saying a word other than album format lyrics. So sitting back, watching the legend face the audience, sing and play his music was heaven.

    Iconic Van Morrison

by Itsme57 on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

The music was Van Morrison, and musicianship by Van and his band was thoroughly enjoyable. Differnt time signatures, jazz riffs and influences, blues sensibility combined to draw out emotions and memories. A disappointment was the short concert, lack of audience engagement, and a crowded stage grouping of musicians... were all forgivable. It was a short fantastic evening with Van!

This was the coldest concert I have been to and I'm not talking temperature. You have to be a die hard fan to appreciate what went on in Van. on Aug. 7. It was like we had a good presentation from a impersonator. There was no interaction or connection wi th the audience. He never said a word. The set was good, the music was a true presentation to a solid fan not there for someone looking to hear just hits. The band was stunning, very tight!! Mavis was great. She put on a show second to none. There's no way she is 71 yrs. She was beltin' them notes like she was half the age.

Lackluster - an hour of simple jazz for $150!

by Senttosleep on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Sad to see a disaffected old guy provide an hour of melody without much expression from any of the band members - cover groups give more heart than this guy - too much in fat royalties flowing have hardened his soul.

    Wild night...not

by browneyed on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Great voice, shame about the lack of an encore...haven't seen that in a long time! Even Leonard Cohen, who is of the same vintage, gave an encore. Seems disconnected from the audience but understand that is his trademark.

You'll get better value out of a Van Morrison cd!

by vedderpie1 on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

He came on early, and left the same way. Who walks offs the stage at 9:45?? Isn't that a typical start time? Good music, bad entertainer. Can't believe I spent the money on this...

    Van Morrison & Mavis Staples

by janniej on 2010-08-08Rogers Arena - Vancouver, BC

Van the Man was amazing. Along with his saxophone, harmonica, guitar and piano playing, his voice is great. He's a true artist and very unassuming. I was surprised that he did "Brown Eyed Girl" ... a nice rendition. Could really hear his jazz roots. His band is very professional and tight and Van melded in with them at every opportunity; he's unpretentious. He said only a handful of words but played for almost 2 hours ... no encore surprised me, but I was quite satisfied. I appreciated the basic stage set up and would like to see more artists skip the onstage glam. Glad I went.

    A Bomb

by MsBottler on 2010-08-08Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

The concert was a dissapointment. The sound system was off. The performance was lackluster. If you werent the fortunate few to be sitting in the front row you could not see the performers as there was not a video screen provided. Ticket prices were very high for this venue and what was presented. We left very early.

    Van Morrison was amazing.

by mskaw on 2010-08-08Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

As we know, Van is not very personable, but his musical talent cannot be denied. After attending his very short concert a couple of years ago, we were reluctant to invest the money in what we feared might be a repeat performance. We were pleasantly surprised. Apparently he cut the last concert short because of the ignorant people who were snapping photos. this time they announced there was to be no picture taking before you entered the Arena, and everyone complied. Unfortunately, there are always those, and for some reason I always seem to be seated next to one, that think they sing better than the performer, and want to chat with their date, and be generally loud and obnoxious, which puts a damper on the evening. I don't know why these people don't just stay home, and let the rest of us enjoy ourselves. They need to ask themselves why they are there. We enjoyed Van Morrison very much.

Van Morrison ... just like the good ol days

by KGCG on 2010-08-08Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Van Morrison's performance on August 7 was superb and the musicians in the band were second to none. Each musician performed solos during each song - the violist and pianist were amazing. Van's voice was as unique as we remembered, but he has no interaction with his audience whatsoever ... none! No encore either, which was disappointing to the fans. The performance was filled with the blues ... excellent show!!

Van Morrison - Not Fan Friendly

by poncho159753 on 2010-08-08Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Enjoy some of his music, so decided to see him live. Never seen him perform live before so didn't know what to expect. Very disappointed, I don't think he said one word to the audience (like hi vancouver). I don't recall him thanking the crowd after we applauded each song. They were no jumbo screen to show close ups of the band. Might as well just played my ipod at home and saved the big bucks. He abruptly left with no encores....didn't return to song his best song - someone like you. Will never pay to see him again. All was not lost. His opening act Mavis Staples was quite delightful, very engaging.

Van Morrison is a fabulous musician...

by Trailwalker4ever on 2010-08-08Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Wow, what a great concert. It's too bad that Van is unable to greet his adoring audience but what he what he lacks interpersonal skills, he certainly makes up for his musical talent. Van Morrison is a gifted writer, singer and musician. I am so glad that we went. What an awesome night. The music was intoxicating!

    The Genius of Van Morrison

by Chickee on 2010-08-08Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

I've always loved the music of Van Morrison, right from the early days of "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Gloria" through the Astral Weeks album and up to the present. His concert in Vancouver last night expressed the genius of his musical sensibilities. I loved the interplay between Van and the other amazing musicians on stage with him. Wow, what a great violinist and sax player in the band! And I had no idea that Van Morrison himself played so many instruments ... piano, harmonica, sax ... A lovely surprise was that the volume was perfect for the venue! Unlike so many live acts I've seen, the musical intricacies and lyrics could be clearly heard, and weren't at all distorted by too much volume. I wish he had slipped in one or two Irish tunes, like one of the songs I've heard him do with the Chieftains (" ... down to Dub-i-lin town ...") but, hey, there's only so much time in an evening! We had a great time at the concert!
