About

With a catalog of songs that reaches back 50 years, Van Morrison always delivers a concert that’s impossible to predict  for his many ticket buyers. The iconic Northern Ireland native has, of course, recorded classic albums like Moondance and Astral Weeks, and timeless singles like "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and "Wild Night." But he's released well over 30 albums during the course of his career, building a repertoire that veers from Celtic music to folk to blues to covers of standards. His focus on any given night could switch on the dime as he follows his muse wherever it takes him. Fans fill seats to see Van Morrison on tour because the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is a master of making his own whatever genre or song he tackles. His unmistakable voice is a reedy and expressive growl, and his delivery --  which is constantly evolving -- conjures elements of jazz, blues and gospel. His latest album, 2012's Born to Sing: No Plan B, marked his first batch of original songs in five years and was hailed by many critics as recalling his much-heralded recordings of the late '60s and early '70s. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.

    No Encore?

by lakerussell on 2015-09-22Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The concert was great, very excellent musicians. It was short, only 11/2 hours. I thought Van had a TIFF event to go to since he left the stage and didn't even come back for an encore Would have like to hear "Brown Eyed Girl".

    last one

Van can sing and his band can play. They are professional at their job. The presentation was robot like and impersonal. I enjoyed the music and the atmosphere but would be just as satisfied sitting at home watching a dvd playing on my low end big screen tv and sound system.

    Van Morrison was unique

by Bigtom on 2015-09-22Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Van Morrison delivered. His backup band was better than expected and very tight - first class all the way. A jazzy and bluesy night for the most part but they rocked Gloria for the encore. He is obviously shy but this concert is all about the music and not about showmanship.

Van Morrison still sounds exactly the same...but how disappointing he didn't sing Brown Eyed Girl!! When fans are paying $250+ per ticket I think you should give them what they want. And what's with the no cocktails for show?? Or no interaction with audience?? Love his music but would not see him again!!

    TOO EXPENSIVE

by SandJmom on 2015-09-22Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

his voice was amazing..but at only 1.5 hours of music..way too expensive for what you got. I was not happy with the strictness of the booze and cameras..also he did none of my favourites - into the mystic ..brown eyed girl..stoned me.... there was no encore..it was like he did not want to be there..shame..I was so looking forward to this concert. I'd like a refund

    Very good but short

by Rockafficionado on 2015-09-22Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Van Morrison is amazing. His voice still sounds great and his music is compelling - whether doing covers or doing his own music. I enjoyed this concert but it could have been so much more. 1 hour and 40 minutes is just not enough and at the end he just walked off the stage - no encore and no opportunity to show appreciation. Most people were stunned when the lights came on and everyone had a list of favourites that they were hoping to hear - and didn't. His band was great and tight. His voice was amazing. It could have been so much more.

    Van at 70.

by VANFANsince81 on 2015-08-16Forest Hills Stadium - New York, NY

Saw Van last year at Cambridge Folk Festival and again this year at Forest Hills. UNBELIEVABLE. The man is experiencing a renaissance as he approaches 70 and is better than ever. Not the chatty type but on top of his game and better than ever. Do not miss him while he is on a roll…….Precious time is slipping away, you know you're only king for a day

    Disappointment

    by Vanfan45 on 2015-08-12ACC - Toronto

My wife & I have been fans of Van the Man for years, you may even say that he was one of the reasons that we got together initially. However, we'd never actually seen him perform live until a few years ago, when he was appearing at the ACC Toronto. What a huge disappointment!!! He obviously didn't want to be there & by the time he was done, neither did we. I think that his backup singers sang more of the songs than he did & actually finished up his final song, when he walked off. No return to the stage for a bow & definitely no encore, he was done & we were walking out slightly over an hour after we'd arrived. I still love the songs & the way he belts them out, but there is absolutely no way I'd ever fork out $300 to see him again! Fool me once, etc.

Van Morrison in Las Vegas was incredible!

by Nikala on 2010-10-07The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel - Las Vegas

Wish he would have allowed cameras so I could have captured some pictures and I was surprised that there was no opening band or an encore and he didn't play Warm Love. But Van Morrison and the musicians playing with him exceeded my expectations. What an amazing group of talent! I was in awe with the performance and was "giddy" for days after! Absolutely brilliant - one of my favorite concerts!

    Van Morrison

by splashover on 2010-08-24Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

I personally did not go, my husband did. HIs comments on the concert was.. Mavis Staples was very entertaining.. He is looking forward to her cd coming out in the fall. As for Van Morrison.. well , the music was good, but as for his people skills.. It was wierd.. Hubby said, he came out played his music and left. No interaction with the people. No good bye at the end, no encore..He thought it was kind of a weird thing. He doesnt think he would go see him again if he came. (We gave the average rating only because of Mavis. If she wasnt there it probably would have only got a fair rating.)

Van was fantastic from beginning to end. He made us 'feeeel' things that lay dormant day to day. It was a privilege and blessing to have him grace our little neck of the woods. Thanks and please come again, I'm missing you already.

    VM in Vancouver

by greeneyedgal on 2010-08-14Rogers Arena/formerly GM Place - Vancouver BC

A slow line-up at the venue's entrance got some of seated late for Mavis Staples--she was fantastic including her version of The Weight. Van & his band were impeccable. Performed a catalogue of songs spanning his career backed by a incredibly tight crew--violinist was amazing. Mesmerizing music & evening of Jazz/R&B with that voice that can melt mountains. I wasn't offended by the lack of connection to the audience--I was there for the music. Obviously was a major problem for some--or maybe they simply don't have a musical attention span past a cd playing in the background. A generous part of both the performances was occupied by non-stop chatter. It just made me concentrate more & go deeper into VM's music. I wonder why people like this even bother to pay money & show up at concerts when they could be much more comfortable & happier sitting at home slurping their wine chatting about nothing while blaring the (insert appropriate artists') cd in the background...perhaps it's to snap that illegal photo to show & tell that they were at such an event because they obviously are not going to hear & enjoy the performance. Someone kindly asked the two to stop....they were completely ignorant & dumfounded & got up in huff & left shortly after. Thank goodness we were left in peace to really dive into the rest of the concert. Other than that it was a wonderful concert.

    Van Morrison

by BellaRider on 2010-08-09Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I originally purchased tickets to see Levon Helm. When it was cancelled and added to Van Morrison at Fort Calgary, I again purchasied tickets which cost more money. A few days before the concert, the venue was again changed, the time of the concert and Levon Helm was cancelled all together. I took a vacation day for nothing. I would never have paid $100.00 to see Van Morrison alone. I found Van Morrison to be boring and very impersonal.... He played more instruments then he spoke to the crowd. Not once did he greet the crowd... That will be the one and only time that I will see Van Morrison. Not impressed about the entire situation.

    Van Morrison is rude

by LittleRobbie on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

The band that backed Van Morrison was fantastic. I do not know who the players were without checking photos and liner notes since he did not say a word to the audience. No introductions. If fact the only word he uttered was to tell the violinist that he hit a "bad note". For a good deal of the concert (when he was not front and centre) he had his back to the audience directing the band players . The music was fantastic even if his voice mike was a bit muddled. After an hour and a quarter of classic tunes and during Gloria ( the only time the audience got to their feet) he just walked off. No encore.

VAN MORRISON IS AN EXACTING TASK MASTER

by monet555 on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

We sat in the cheap seats and the sound was still great. Even from that distance I could see "Van the Man" direct his musicians. Some with a pointed finger and some with just a nod. A very talented and tight crew that played with the music and made each song unique. No one should go to a Van Morrison concert and expect to hear songs exactly like off the albums. It was more like sitting in on a jam session and I felt privileged. Awesome as always.

    Van Morrison a tasty package

by thunderclap2009 on 2010-08-09Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Van Morrison played song after song, kind of like a Springsteen concert without addressing the audience. The sound was crystal clear and the lights complemented. A feel-good show in which many in the the crowd smiled, nodded, and clapped along. At the same time Morrison allowed his band ample opportunity to showcase their own talents. An opportunity to see and hear true greatness.

I have seen Van Morrison before and am well aware of his moodiness. He does not speak to the audience and some people find that frustrating. But his music does his talking. He played for close to two hours non-stop with no intermission, no stopping to "tune" instruments. His back up band was one of the tightest groups I've ever heard, each player amazing in their own right. Van alternated between piano, organ. guitar and mouth harp to give a great performance. To those who are angry because he does not play Brown Eyed Girl the same as he did forty years ago but shows his jazz and blues influence with a different version, well, you don't appreciate Van Morrison the artist and why did you go.
