This symphony was one of the best that I have ever seen! The musicians are masters of their crafts and the conductor kept us wanting more.
Just a wonderful and charismatically orchestrated event. Tovey was very much into it, and the TWU choir did a fantastic job adding to the array of melodic solos.
From oboe and flute passages to full choir there was drama, passion and solemness that could move anyone. It was one of the lengthiest performances I've attended at the Chan, but time seemed to fly by because I was so involved with the music. Two male and two female vocal soloists added different dimensions to the Mass, along with the harpsichord and organ. This performance with TWU choir had it all, as heard from my full price seat in the Dress Circle.
Technically fine performances overall but was surprised that the soloists were not so impressive or moving. The mezzo-soprano got closest to being moving in one solo. I found the tenor and bass' voices unpleasant with no depth. I hope other soloists will be invited next time to the Chan Center.
Despite excellent violin, flute, and oboe playing--and the singing of Susan Platt--this performance of the B minor Mass left me feeling just plain nervous. Always I wondered if the whole thing was going off the rails. At many points, especially in the first quarter of the work, the choir ( not to mention the double basses) almost lost its way. In this mostly contrapuntal music, one had the impression the orchestra and the choir were not singing the same work--but rather 2 or 3 different works. (The Et resurrexit was taken about 10 metronomic beats too fast, by the way.) In the second half there were good moments, but this music is just slightly beyond the capacity of the TWU choirs. Bach being Bach, the whole thing still sounded pretty good, esp. toward the end. But it would be better to rehearse much, much more in any future performance. I do wish I could have written a happier review.
An excellent show by the Vancouver Symphony. I would definitely recommend this event.
This is the first event of this nature I have been to and I thought it was incredible. I took my 14 year old son and we had such a great time together. I have been to lots of concerts but not a classical concert and there was a completely different vibe and a real eclectic mix of people. The Chan centre is absolutely beautiful and provided the perfect back drop. I would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone.
The first half commenced with a piece by Correlli and thereafter a suite narrated by Alessandro Juliani composed by Telemann, which told in strings the story of Don Quixote. Both were supurb and the suite was fun. Allessandro added to the understanding of the music. After the intermission the strings, led by Dale Barltrop, from down under, played in the acoustically superb hall a faultless rendition of Vivaldi's classic, The Four Seasons.
Timeless classic, beautifully interpreted by VSO! Bravo!
Very good performance by the VSO. Too bad the people around us in Loge felt it was appropriate to talk throughout the concert. Please respect other concert goers by not wearing perfume and listenening to the artists.
This was our first visit to the Chan Centre, and we were most favourably impressed by the accoustics. We were seated in the upper circle, and we couldn't have heard any better. The VSO which we hadn't had the opportunity to listen to for several years, was spectacular and we really enjoyed the selection of pieces.
An evening of fantastic music and goosebumps... Barry Douglas is a phenomenal musician and awe inspiring talent!! I could have sat there for hours!! Thank you!!
From the second row, we could see all the expression and passion -- energy galore! Douglas brought plenty of enthusiasm to the night's interpretations of classic Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. At times, early on, it seemed there might be a gap between the enthusiasm of Douglas and the VSA players, but overall they produced a very memorable performance.
A disappointing evening. Sensitive piano playing by Andrew Armstrong wasnt enough to compensate for the insensitive conducting and eccentric tempi set by Jean-Marie Zeitouni. The scaled-down orchestra sounded muffled from the centre balcony of the Chan.
I really enjoyed the concert. I beleive Kereshme Ensemble took a bold move to play with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as well as to invite Mr. Alireza Ghorbani, one of the most famous and top traditional persian music vocalist. It was very kind of Mr. Ghorbani to accept the invitation and humbly sing with a non-professional music group. I wish such programs continue in other occasions and wish all the best for Kereshme Ensemble introducing the rich persian culture to the world.
I had previously been to many Kereshmeh concerts, including a similar performance with the Newest Symphony Orchestra in Centinneal Threatre in Nov. 2008. This was simply one of the best concerts ever. The vocalist (Alireza Ghorbani) was also out of this world. The Persian Music and the symphony blended so we ll together. I look forward to more, and thanks to all the organizers and the talented musicians.
It was a great event. I'm glad that I attended. The tickets were reasonably prices, the venue was great, and the music was beautiful. On top of that, free parking by the venue, which is just awesome. I recommend the Kereshmeh Ensemble and future events at the Chan Centre.
This performance was unforgettable! VSO played with Persian musicians what was noble to the musical experiences of many, and proved that artists can cross/remove any boundaries between cultures. Thank you VSO! Hope to see events like this again and again.
Alireza Ghorbani was absolutely amazing! Such a soulful singer! I only wish that cd's of his singing had been available. I'm sure they would have sold out.
This was our daughetrs Christmas gift to me and my wife and we were both amazed. It was a fantastic show.
